from the PrincipalDear Stella Community,Vale Year 12 2018 Year 12 finished classes with us this week and we celebrated with a farewell assembly at the College and Graduation Mass and Awards at St Mary’s Church in Manly. It was an exciting week as our Year 12 group is a particularly memorable one. These girls were great leaders and they made their mark on the younger students by being both responsible and mature but also very approachable and friendly. We will miss Year 12 2018. We wish them all the best in their upcoming examinations.

Graduation Assembly This is an edited version of the speech I made to the graduating class of 2018 on Thursday.

I ask you Year 12 2019, “How is your ability to persist or persevere going to take you into your future?” You have been lucky to live in Australia, where many doors are open to you. But what will your future be beyond these walls?

In March this year, Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Hilary and Bill Clinton, wrote a book, She Persisted Around the World: 13 Women who changed history. In her book the author commemorates thirteen women, some well-known and others less widely recognized, who overcame adversity and whose work has had a global impact: women such as Marie Curie, Caroline Herschel, Wangari Maathai, Aisha Rateb, J.K. Rowling, Kate Sheppard, and Malala Yousafzai. Clinton said, “Persistence is important—arguably it’s necessary—to be the people we want to be, particularly at this moment in time. None of the women in these books achieved what they did through talent alone.’

So how do I know that you will persevere Year 12 2018?

Well I have asked your PC teachers, those mentors who know you and have worked with for many years, “How do our Year 12 girls demonstrate persistence and perseverance?”

This is what I heard: ‘I know there was quite a number of girls who persisted with their major works, some completed 2 or 3 major works. These projects require months and months of work, they started them Term 4 2017 and I know it is particularly difficult to stay engaged and motivated with the same project over such an extended period. So, they really have had to exercise that skill of persistence, especially when things don’t work out the way they had imagined it to.’

‘This current Year 12 group are the most compassionate group I’ve seen for a while. They really look out for each other and are always ready to support an individual who may need some help. It doesn’t necessarily have to be their friend – they just care for each other so well. They’ll buy each other cake, or a coffee, or chocolates – really sweet gestures when needed. They also work well as a group towards common goals. Sometimes it’s to “make it the best ever swimming carnival” or to make the most money ever for a charity event, or to have the most students dress up or they want to try to sort out a present to send to someone – they really communicate well and encourage each other.’

‘Several students struggled under the pressure of trials and came to school looking incredibly tense, worried and disillusioned with the exam pressure. My PC group persistently rallied around these vulnerable students to encourage them and provide much needed mental support. Many persisted in providing study notes, a word of encouragement or daily checks on these students to motivate them. Their kind words, I believe, were invaluable to each other’s wellbeing and was an education to watch. It illustrates the amazing care students have nurtured over the years at Stella Maris.’

The VIA Institute on Character is a non-profit organization, based in America, dedicated to bringing the science of character strengths to the world through supporting research, creating and validating surveys of character, and developing practical tools for individuals and practitioners. It lists the key character strengths of a flourishing life as

wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance and transcendence.

The Institute classes perseverance or persistence in the category of courage. Persistence sits alongside enthusiasm or vitality, honesty or integrity and bravery as key features of this character strength. I know girls you have all these characteristics in abundance.

Be courageous, be persistent, persevere and go forward as Stella Girls today knowing that the Stella community has valued what you have given to this community and that you have made your mark already as women who will make a difference.

Good luck Year 12 2018- persist and persevere and you will change the world.

Farewell Sarah Carter Today we farewell our Deputy Principal, Sarah Carter, who is returning to Melbourne to a Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School) position in the prestigious girls’ school, Fintona.

Sarah has achieved some incredible milestones for Stella. She has drawn our attention to student and staff wellbeing and linked us to mentors such as Justin Coulson and a key contemporary framework in Positive Education. As well as providing a framework and coaching in student wellbeing she has worked through the Heads of Year to enable staff to understand more clearly their key role as Pastoral Carers for our girls. This work will continue in 2019.

Another significant achievement is the oversight (with Zita Briones) of the building of the Scholastica wing. This was not without its difficulties with design changes and building challenges. The College now has a wonderful science, library and administration wing with thanks to Sarah and Zita and the Board Building and Resources Committee.

Although we are sad to see Sarah go, we know that we have benefited from her time with us and that she now returns to Melbourne where she will be closer to her family and many friends.

Stella Maris College is grateful for all Ms Carter has done and I know she will be missed by students and staff.

GSE Immersions We wish our students who are on Year 10 and Year 11 Immersions to Santa Teresa and the Philippines good luck and we hope the experiences are memorable ones. Philippines - Erin Fisher, Charlotte Edwards and Mr Mitchell Smith Santa Teresa - Charlotte Elliot, Brodie Gordon and Emily Foresto Kiribati - Ms Linda Silburn

CurriculumSCIENCE NEWSStella Maris College has been invited to participate in “An Investigation of Motivation and Engagement in Science” being conducted by Scientia Professor Andrew Martin and Associate Professor Joel Pearson of University of New South Wales (UNSW).

This research aims to develop a better understanding of students’ science motivation, engagement, and achievement as well as to improve students’ educational outcomes in Science and help inform science teachers in their teaching.

Full details on the research project covering researcher contact details, de-identified data, benefits, minimal risks, withdrawal from the study etc. can be found here:

Parent/guardian information statement and consent for participation https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=a2luZ3MuZWR1LmF1fG1lc19yZXNlYXJjaHxneDo0MzVlM2IzMzQzMjUwYTFi

Participant information statement and consent for participation

The first part of the research involves Years 7 to 10 students completing a 40-minute survey during a Science class.

This survey will assess many educational and psychological factors implicated in science learning, including: - Motivation e.g. students' Science self-efficacy, learning focus, valuing, persistence, anxiety, fear of failure, self-sabotage. - Engagement e.g. students’ Science participation, enjoyment, planning, disengagement, homework completion. - Achievement e.g. key aspects of syllabus. - Supporting and aspirational factors e.g. parents’ interest in Science, career intentions, teaching approaches, etc.

There will be the opportunity for some students in 2019 to take part in a further survey science test, while wearing a biometric wristband and an EEG headset to collect physiological information such as heart rate and brain activity.

Please note that participation in this study is voluntary and your decision whether or not to have your child participate in the study will not affect your relationship with our school or the University of New South Wales.

You are able to provide consent for your child's participation in the research study by completing this secure link provided by the UNSW https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/StellaMarisCollegePGConsent

We are excited as one of several schools to be invited to participate in this research study.
