Guatemala ScholarshipsJohn Knox continues to respond to God’s call toserve our sisters and brothers in and aroundCobán, Guatemala. Please join in thistransformative work by helping to fundstudents’ education in two vital ministries withwhich we partner:

The WALC program (Women in AgroecologyLeadership for Conservation) invites adolescentwomen to a 25-day residency at Rob and TaraCahill’s agroecology center. These young womenlearn sustainable local agriculture, personalgrowth, leadership development, and women’shealth. They commit to continue in school

through the following academic year and receive a modest monthly stipend to cover the cost of tuitionat a local school in their town or village. One scholarship of $150 covers the expense of one student’sparticipation this year.

La Patria Norte is a K-12 school established in 2009 by the Evangelical National Presbyterian Churchof Guatemala. It provides excellent secondary education in Christ’s name to this underserved region, offering degrees in medicine, judicial sciences, agro-forestry, and computers. Worship, Bible study, and faith formation are integral to the learning these students receive. Cost for a student is $600 peryear. One scholarship contribution provides significant support; four scholarship contributions providesa full support for a student in Cobán.

The contribution form is available here and at the church. Thank you for your generosity.

MailboxIt's been 1 year since I experienced a near fatal heart attack.Since that initial day, September 9, 2018, a beautiful summerSunday afternoon, God has worked a miracle in my life. Thelast I remember at Greer Memorial ER was a nurse lookingdown at me and trying to calm me while speaking, "Mr.Gardner, you are having a heart attack." At that moment Iblacked out. I was transported to GHS by air. Twenty-threedays later, I began to recover. It was very hard for me tocommunicate with my family due to the many physicalproblems that were occurring. Hearing about some of theproblems that happened during the 23 days of an inducedcoma, I shared with my family experiences I had during thisjourney. These were dreams or visions. Some werefrightening or confusing. However, the final vision wasbeautiful. I wasn't sure where I was or what I was seeing andhearing. I'll share this with you: the last words I heard were, "It's all right, time to turn out the lights andgo to sleep"; I woke up. I can tell you it was real. After waking I learned of my immediate medicalproblems and processes necessary to begin recovery. The recovery road appeared to be long. Myfamily shared prayers from all over. I began to feel God's hands and Christ carrying me. He would tellme to be calm and proceed to heal. Your time is not finished.

I had many visits from Gordon and David. While I was laying waiting for a medical procedure to begin atGHS, my eyes closed and praying quietly that this procedure would get better. I opened my eyes andDavid was looking down at me. It was a blessing, and we prayed together. While waiting at RogerPeace for this same procedure, Gordon came in to sit with me. I told him what was going on, so hesaid let's talk. While talking, I noticed the time had gone by to start the procedure. We took a break inour talk and I called the desk. Doctors decided the procedure was no longer needed due to healthimproving. This was amazing news! I shared this with Gordon, as he was leaving he reminded me"God works 1 day at a time" and we prayed. Our beloved JK ministers carried the church's prayer, loveand faith. I can tell you all, prayer power was truly felt.

While in the hospital, I met our fine medical people. We are blessed to be in this area with such awealth of God nurtured abilities. The strength of my wife, Tracy, making strong decision, my talenteddaughter, Taylor keeping everyone informed through the Caringbridge, my son, Thomas, supportinghis mom during a time of need, his wife, Erica, with her wealth of medical knowledge, and mygrandchildren, Larsyn and TJ. Our family and their prayers.

John Knox Presbyterian Church sits in a beautiful Greenville, SC, community reaching out to all, nomatter what the situation. This is where it all started for me when my mom and dad brought us aschildren. The power of this church is Christ centered and God approved, and these gifts always give.Thank you all from the Gardner family.

Blessed Be To God through his son Jesus Christ. Amen.
