COLD FORMED SECTIONSAccurately sized strips, cut from high quality hot rolled mild steel coils, are fed into the
tube mill. The flat strip is gradually formed to a round pr ofile with an open seam along itslength.
A high frequency induction welding technique is used to form a strong continuous seam joint. Theformed pipe passes through and external bead scarfing and sizing process to bring its dimensions
within specified tolerances. The pipes are then cut to desired length.
The cut pipes are end faced, straightened and hydro tested. Each pipe is subjected to a specified pressure at thehydrotester to ensure that welding is strong and free from leakage.
After this stage, if required, the pipes are galvanised threaded and socketed. The manufacturing process uses HotRolled (HR) mild steel with a composition of carbon 0.20% maximum : phosphorous 0.05% maximum : manganese 1.20%
maximum; sulphur 0.05% maximum and silicon traces.
All the water pipes are threaded to (BSPT specifictaion and are fitted with a socket on one end).
Cold-formed steel sections commonly known as hollow sections conform to KenyaBureau of Standards KS 02-10 4. Hollow sections are manufactured on tube mills using highfrequency induction welding technique. The strip is continuously seam welded while roundin shape and then gra dually brought to the desired section in the sizing mill. The welded seam isput to a great amount of cold working while being sized. This is a very severe test of the strength ofa seam weld and ensures that each length of hollow section is welded for maximum strength.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
TYPICAL PROPERTIES IN THE ANNEALED CONDITIONThe properties quoted in this publication are of mill production and unless indicated should not be regarded as guaranteed minimum values forspecification purposes
CORROSION RESISTANCE
AqueousAs a rough guide the following examples are given for certain pure acid-water mixtures -
Key: 0 = resistant - corrosion rate less than 100/year 1 = partly resistant - corrosion rate 100 to 1000/year
2 = non-resistant - corrosion rate more than 1000/year
ATMOSPHERICThe performance of G304 compared with other metals in various environments is shown in the following table the corrosion rates are based on 10 yearsexposure.
THERMAL PROCESSING Annealing. Heat from 1010 C and cool rapidly in air or water. The best corrosion resistance is obtained when the annealing is above 1070 C and cooling
is rapid. Hot Working.
Initial forging and pressing 1150 C to 1260C Finishing temperature 900 to 925 C All hot working operations should followed by annealing
Note: soaking times to ensure uniformity of temperature are longer for stainless steel than for carbon steel - approximately 1 times.
COLD WORKINGG304 being extremely tough and ductile, are readily fabricated by cold working. Typical operations include bending, forming, deep drawing and
upsetting.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
The window profiles are hot rolled from mild steel with a maximum carbon content of 0,30%making it suitable for welding using any of the standard welding processes, usually without special
precautions. No test or analysis certificates are supplied.
WINDOW SECTIONS
EQUAL AND UNEQUAL ANGLES
Steel for structural sections is normally produced to SANS 1431 grade 350WA and BS EN 10025 grade 275JR.For improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, COR-TEN A should be used.See data sheet: COR-TEN (file reference E6.1)
For applications where mechanical properties of the steel are not important, angles (equal leg) in the size range 25 x 25 x 3 mm to 80 x 80 x 12 mm can beordered in the mild steelgrade (commercial quality).
PROTECTIVE COATINGS
When choosing a rust prevention method for a steel component or structure, many technical factors including the environment, stress during transport, storage, fitting or erection must be considered. Adequate preparation of the substrate is of vital importance to the ultimate success of the coating, as isthe method of application. Paint, hot-dip galvanizing or duplex coatings (zinc plus paint) can be specified for corrosion protection, depending on theaggressiveness of the environment. Choice of the protective mechanism is considered to be the responsibility of the specifier, fabricator or end user.

DEFINITIONSTensile testTest pieces are used for establishing mechanical properties. When the test is done. Four values (1, 2, 3 and 4) are obtained.
TENSILE STRENGTH
The stress required to rupture in tension (pull) , expressed in Megapascals (MPa). Also called Breaking Strength, Ultimate Strength and UltimateTensile Strength.
YIELD STRENGTH
The stress at which a material exhibits a specified llimiting set, commonly taken by the offset method as 0.20 per cent of the specimen`s originalength, expressed in Megapascals.
ELONGATION
The amount of permanent stretch, after fracture in tension, expressed as a percentage of the specimen`s original length.
REDUCTION OF AREA
The difference between the original cross sectional area of a specimen and the least cross sectional area after rupture in tensile tests, expressedpercentage of the original cross-sectional area.
IMPACT STRENGTH
A measure of toughness. The force to fracture a notched specimen with a single blow. Expressed in Joules (J) or foot-pounds of the energy absoDesignated as Charpyor IzodImpact Strength, depending on the testing machine used.
HEAT TREATMENT
An operation or combination of operations involving the heating and cooling of a metal to obtain certain desirable conditions or properties, annot for the sole purpose of mechanical working.
ANNEALING
Heating and cooling primarily: To induce softness
To relieve internal stresses
To obtain the optimum combination of strength and ductility.
DUCTILITY
The property which permits deformation under tension without rupture. Values of nlongationand Reduction of Areaare generally taken as ameasure of Ductility.
HARDNESSS
Resistance to plastic deformation by indentation, penetration, scratchimg or bending. Expressed by means of Brinell, Rockwell, ScleroscopeoVickersHardness numbers, depending upon the testing machine used and should be read in conjuction with specified mechanical required.
STRESS RELIEVING
Heating and cooling to effect the release of stresses contained in material induced by heating, welding or machining.
TEMPERING
Bringing about an intermediate condition in steel between being ductile and very hard, to provide a desired combination of hardness and ductto achieve prescribed mechanical properties.
QUENCHING
This is the process carried out after material has been heated to the required temperature. The material is then immersed in specific cooling ageto attain hardness which is dependant on the cooling speed which is possible for the hardening temperature concerned.
CASE HARDENING
In applications where it is necessary for components to have great toughness but, at the same time must have a high resistance to wear, the re-quired hardness can be a chieved by case hardening the outer surface by means of one of the following methods:
Carburizing Carbonitriding Nitriding Nitrocarburising Tuftriding Flame Hardening Induction Hardening
14. LIMITING HARDENING SECTION
The maximum section on which certain mechanical properties are guaranteed according to the British Standard Specification, BS 970 Pt of 1983
