It collapses at the joints; they cannot take moment forces.




Load from the topintroduces compression loads (green)




Introduce diagonals to absorb the moment forces in joints




Diagonals carry tension (in this setup)




As diagonals are being pulled, they can be very slender




If the diagonals orient differently they carry compression,consequently have to be thicker to avoid buckling.




Stiffening the joints permits to take moment forces.This is called a Vierendeel Beam.
