One only needs to look at the number of vessels in our annual Construction Survey to see that the proof is in the pudding. Talk about steady. This year there were a total of 745 vessels in the survey, same as last year. Each year, the total is comprised of vessels con- tracted for, under construction, or recently deliv- ered during the past 12 months (from March 2013 to March 2014). The annual Construction Survey is compiled from boats covered in WorkBoat during the past 12 months, survey questionnaires, websites, press releases and other announcements, financial reports and various other sources. Given this formula, therefore, many vessels remain part of the survey for several years, from when the initial contract is awarded until final delivery. What’s particularly interesting about the totals from the past two years is that even when one considers that vessels can remain in the survey for more than a year, it is a certainty that the dozens of shipyards that have appeared in the survey over the past two years are responsible for having under contract, under construction, or recently delivered well over 1,000 vessels. ates continues to build its latest signa-ture 93'×38' tugs, delivering tugboats to Moran Towing, McAllister Towing, Seabulk Towing, and Marine Towing of Tampa during 2013.
Over on the West Coast, Foss Maritime’s Seattle and Rainier (Ore.) shipyards have both been busy. The Seattle yard is building two fireboats for the Port of Long Beach (Calif.), and the Rainier yard recently delivered a 20-car ferry for Washington state, and is building three Arctic-classed tugs for the operational side of Foss’s business.
The Gulf Coast continues to be the busiest region in the U.S. second-tier shipyard market primarily because of the boom in the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico.
Offshore service vessel operators such as Hornbeck Offshore Services, Edison Chouest Offshore, Tidewater
Marine, Harvey Gulf International Marine and others are keeping Gulf yards busy with orders for new OSVs. However other yards are also getting a piece of the OSV pie. BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards in Jacksonville, Fla., is building four 8,000-hp diesel-electric platform supply vessels for Jackson Offshore Operators.
Though the survey is comprised of
newbuild vessels only, a comment from Richard Sobocinski, vice president of contracts for Colonna’s Shipyard in Norfolk, Va., which primarily special-izes in ship repair, best sums up what being a shipyard owner entails.
“If you want to do the same thing everyday, be a banker or something,” he said. “If you want something new everyday, this is the business.”
