1

Changes in STD Data Presentation

• Previous STD slide set data were presented using STD cases based on the report date

• We recreated STD data files from 2005-2012 using STD cases based on the diagnosis date

• A different source of population data (for denominators) was used to calculate rates

• Therefore, cases, rates and percentages from 2005 to 2011 may not be the same as those in previous STD slide sets

2

Population Data Used to Calculate Rates• In previous slide sets, population data from 2011 and

earlier used in rate calculations were from the Texas State Data Center (TSDC)

• TSDC population data did not break down the ‘Other’ race category into minority racial groups

• The current 2012 STD Surveillance Report and slides use US Census Data from the National Center for Health Statistics, which has categories for ‘Asian/Pacific Islander’ and ‘American Indian/Alaskan Native’

• These categories were combined to create an “Other category due to the low rates of STDs in these populations

Summary

• From 2011 to 2012, total primary and secondary syphilis cases in Texas increased from 1,173 cases to 1,636 cases; transmission among MSM continues to drive this increase

• Chlamydia and gonorrhea case numbers are relatively stable; these STDs are most common among individuals aged 15-24 years

• Racial and ethnic disparities continue to exist for chlamydia, gonorrhea and P&S syphilis
