Recently, a friend asked about shooting in fluorescent lighting conditions with an on-

camera flash.

First, on-camera flash units, though sometimes handy for shooting one person, most often don’t have the range to shoot larger groups. They just don’t have the coverage needed for use in large rooms, banquet halls and

the like.

Second, they often create a very un-natural look to the lighting, making the photos look harsh.

Third, the trend these days, with ultra-sensitive sensors is to utilize their capacity to record fine detail at higher ISO settings.

The following images were made under fluorescent lighting conditions, with ISO

settings of 800 to 1600.

Try this the next time you are shooting under these conditions. Bump up your ISO setting. If

you hand-hold the camera, make sure to shoot at 1/60th of a second or faster. Also, the

basic caveat is: buy the fastest lens you can afford!

Remember: • Increase the ISO setting as much as you think you can

considering how you will use the pictures. For the web, you don’t need large images.

• Buy the fastest lenses you can afford for your system.• Keep the camera as steady as possible. Use a tripod,

if necessary. Shoot at 1/60th of a second or faster for clearer shots.
