Stay awake and be ready for you do not know
on what day the Son of Man will come.
Estén preparados, porque no saben a qué hora va a venir el Hijo del hombre.
Jesus concludes his teaching about those who are “faithful and
prudent stewards” with that classic stewardship teaching: “Much
will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more
will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Christian
stewards recognize that God is the ultimate source of their gifts,
talents, resources and aptitudes, and that God wants them to use
these varied gifts in his service.

Wedding Anniversary: No anniversaries recorded for the month of August.
We lift up to the Lord in
prayer all those who seek heal-

We pray too, for those who
struggle with grief or addictions
and those who labor to provide
our well being and freedom especially first responders and military, and for
those separated from their loved ones and family. For each of them, may the
promise and the gift of the peace of Christ fill their hearts and minds, and may
almighty God always provide their every need.

From the Deacon’s desk...
(Breitbart) Pope Francis has taken what could be the first step towards the ordination of women in the Roman Catholic Church by setting up a spe-cial commission to consider the possi-bility of female deacons. The Vatican announced the ap-pointment of panel of theological ex-perts – half men, half women – to con-
sider whether allowing women to be-come deacons could be allowed under the Church’s teaching. Francis took the decision after “intense prayer and mature reflec-tion”, a short announcement added. It follows unscripted remarks by the Pope at an audience for senior nuns in Rome in May in which he indicated
that he would consider a special com-mission to look at the role of women in the early Christian church. He was asked during the gathering of the International Union of Superi-ors General (UISG), about references in the New Testament and early Chris-tian writings to women described as servants of the church, or deacons.
He said the exact meaning of the references was unclear, adding: “Constituting an official commis-sion that might study the ques-tion? I believe yes. “It would do good for the Church to clarify this point.” His comments
were interpreted in some quarters as signaling an historic shift while others played them down as off-the-cuff re-marks. But the latest announcement shows the Pope is taking the issue seriously. Francis has previously ruled out the ordination of women as priests, re-marking in July 2013 that he believed

Who is my neighbor?
Pope Francis takes first step towards ordaining women as
deacons By Editor, Catholic News, August 3, 2016
(Women as Deacons, continued)
that door is closed”. Deacons are one of the three "orders" of ordained ministry in the church, after bishops and priests and can fulfil some but not all of the du-ties of priests including preaching, conducting baptisms and serving Holy Communion. Unlike the priesthood, however, the role of deacon is open to married men. The group will be chaired by Archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer, secretary of the Vatican’s doc-trinal watchdog, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and include six women and six men from academ-ic institutions around the world. Jack Valero, of the group Catholic Voices, said the move should not be viewed through the lens of liberalism versus conservatism. “This is neither something [Pope Francis] wants necessarily to change nor to kick into the long grass but something he wants to understand really well and see if it might help the Church today,” he said. “He is genuinely open. “I don’t think he wants to change something but maybe recover some-thing, if something is there to be re-covered.” He explained that there is debate about exact what role "deaconesses" played in early Christian times and whether they were roles which could now be performed by lay people with-out the need to be ordained. “I think he genuinely wants to know what was done in the early Church and whether it can be success-fully done now or whether it is some-thing we no longer need,” he said. “He is not keen to have a new clerical caste, he is much more keen on lay people doing more in the Church.”
