New Sign at Gypsy Hill Duck Pond The family of P.E. Hutchens, Staunton’s first Superintendent of Parks, donated the new Duck Pond sign at Gypsy Hill Park. The pond was once referred to as Hutchens Lake. P.E. Hutchens was a busy man, caring for not only the grounds, but for an array of domestic and wild animals, various birds and a herd of deer (around 1889). He also monitored the Baldwin Fair Grounds and enforced new rules adopted by Staunton City Council. Many thanks to the Hutchens family for their generous donation! Mayor Carolyn Dull

Q: What’s your fondest childhood memory involving recreation? A: I have so many great memories of recreation at Staunton’s parks that it is very difficult to pick just one so you will have to decide! I LOVED marching around the (old) bandstand as a child when the Stonewall Brigade Band played. I loved riding my bike with my best friend to the tennis courts at Gypsy Hill Park in the afternoon to play. By going at the hottest part of the day, we didn’t have to wait! I loved seeing the peacocks and deer in the park, although now I wonder how the neighbors felt about those peacocks! As I grew up, I had a great time playing softball at the various fields.

Q: In what ways are Staunton’s parks meaningful to you? A: They are so important in terms of the quality of life for citizens from Staunton and Augusta County. They provide plenty of opportunities for free recreation, entertainment, and beauty. I currently enjoying walking in the park and attending the various musical events available. For those of us who grew up here it’s easy to think that every city must have parks like ours, but if you take a visitor around to our parks, you will find that our parks are NOT typical. Visitors are amazed at the quality of our parks.

Q My children/grandchildren love to___. A: Play at the playgrounds, feed the ducks, and ride the train at the park.

Q: Do you play or watch sports at Staunton parks? If so, which ones? A: Staunton Braves

Club meets Friday mornings at 9am in Gypsy Hill Park at the bandstand. Participants may walk and record their miles any time and at their convenience. Councilman Terry Holmes

Q: What’s your fondest childhood memory involving recreation?A: I love to go fishing. I love to fish from a bank or in a boat, and just relax in a nice serene atmosphere. It is like meditation.

Q: Why are Parks and Recreation essential to our community? What are the benefits of park spaces and recreational activities?A: We all need green space that provides a clean, relaxing, and safe area for friends and family to get together, for a picnic or to hear some music. A safe place to walk that is well landscaped to meet friends and to keep healthy. Parks provide habitats for birds and animals and help with water retention and provide green areas that are soothing and relaxing. Parks facilitate interaction among its citizens, and bring us all together, while enhancing the lives of all who live there. It is something we all can enjoy, no matter our age, race or creed. It is a great leveler and brings us together.

Q: In what ways are Staunton’s parks meaningful to you?A: I love having the ability to walk in the park, to talk to people, to hear some music or feed the ducks. When I go to the park, I relax and enjoy being outdoors. I love the cultural events that happen in the park like Art in the Park, Jazz, and Bluegrass. The fireworks on the 4th of July are probably my favorite. I love Gypsy Hill Park and the fact that our forefathers thought to set aside this space for all of us to enjoy. I like walking up to the top of Betsy Bell or the trails at Montgomery Hall Park. It’s good to know that these green areas will be there for our future citizens.

Councilwoman Andrea Oakes

Q: What’s your favorite outdoor leisure activity?A: I like to go to the Woodrow Park and admire the Staunton skyline and the Sears Hill Bridge, and I have been known to drop a fishing line in Lake Tams during special events.

Q: In what ways are Staunton’s parks meaningful to you?A: I have enjoyed the Montgomery Hall Park historical African-American events that have taken place through-out the years. I always come away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Staunton’s past when I have attended one of these wonderful events. I also have fond memories of taking my son to the playground at Montgomery Hall Park to play on the awesome playground area and share a picnic lunch.

Q: How do you and your family use Staunton’s parks?A: A Christmas tradition with my family each year is riding through Gypsy Hill Park when the Christmas lights are on and admiring the various displays set up in the Lights in the Park event. During the summer months we enjoy Gypsy Hill’s Fourth of July celebration where I volunteer with the America’s Birthday Celebration (ABC) Committee. I also like to attend the different nights of entertainment offered through-out the week in the warmer months at Gypsy Hill Park with my family.

HEART: Healthy Environmental Afterschool Recreation TimeThe HEART afterschool program is a latchkey program that provides a home away from home to children of working parents. Concerns about safety and being home alone or under-supervised is a good reason to enroll your child in this program. We have very little staff turnover from year to year giving us confidence that your child’s caregiver is both qualified and trustworthy. We have known each member of our child care staff for at least five years and they have extensive training and experience. They understand that parents want their children to be kept safe and feel acceptance and belonging. Most of our staff are parents and grandparents themselves, which can be very reassuring given staff maturity and experience are the common denominators when establishing security and trust in a caregiver relationship. The HEART program has quite a tradition with its roots beginning more than 30 years ago with the first pilot program at McSwain Elementary School. We have since branched out to each elementary school in Staunton and have developed a credible and professional reputation. This year we are continuing with our enrichment to enhance what is already provided by the Staunton City Schools bookmobile activities, contracted creation artist Sandra Carter and our favorite animated storytellers Brenda and Diana from the Staunton Public Library. Registration is now being taken. Afternoon HEART is $126 per month. Morning HEART is $27 per month, both together are $140 per month. For any questions regarding the HEART program, please contact Claire Richardson at [email protected] or (540) 332-3945.

Councilman Walt Obenschain

Q: What’s your fondest childhood memory involving recreation? As a small child I enjoyed the swings and sliding board, skipping around the bandstand, feeding the ducks and catching crayfish in the creeks. While in elementary school there was baseball, football, golf, swimming, riding bikes, ice skating and fishing at Lake Tams, tennis, going to the fair and riding horses at the stables before the football stadium was built. In high school, there were football games and track meets to participate in, races to run in the park, concerts and movies to attend, Staunton Braves baseball and recreation softball games to watch, and picnics with family and friends.

Q: How do you and your family use Staunton’s parks? A: I have now come full circle enjoying walking, riding a bike and playing golf as well as the summer programs held at the bandstand. We all greatly appreciated the twenty five years of concerts the Statler Brothers gave us on the 4th of July as well as the continuation of that celebration by the ABC committee today.

Q: Why are Parks and Recreation essential to our community? What are the benefits of park spaces and recreational activities? A: Our community is truly blessed to have several exceptionally maintained parks where we can indulge our passion for and participation in a variety of recreational pursuits, not only for our citizens, but also for our neighbors and visitors who are creating their own fond memories. These are among the reasons why parks and recreation are essential and beneficial to a community, and why they continue to be a necessity rather than just an amenity.

11 www.facebook.com/StauntonRecreationParks

Councilman James Harrington

Q: In what ways are Staunton’s parks meaningful to you? A: Constance and I are both exercise walkers and we use Gypsy Hill Park quite often for that purpose. Montgomery Hall Park, too, on occasion, but mostly GHP since it is 3 blocks away. It is a great course for a workout: just the right amount of uphill grades, restroom facilities at convenient intervals, pretty surroundings.

Q: What is your favorite park amenity and why? A: I think these facilities are essential and integral to Staunton’s strong sense of community. Our own family has enjoyed little league baseball games, Staunton Braves games, fishing tournaments, Art in the Park, trail hiking (at MHP), English Country Dancing at the Garden Center, watching (and later riding in!) the July 4 parade, the Festival of Lights, the African American Festival, Stonewall Brigade Band concerts, Jazz in the Park, the Gypsy Express railway, the list goes on. Add to this list a host of other activities that friends and neighbors value: mountain biking, soccer, frisbee golf, swimming all of these activities enrich the fabric of our community and add to our quality of life.

Q: When I visit a Staunton park you can usually find me_____?A: In addition to the list of activities above, another of my favorite activities is showing out-of-town visitors around our parks. The range and scope of our park facilities is extraordinary for a city our size and this makes me proud. What also makes me proud is the talent, dedication, and creativity of our P&R staff...which is evident in the programming, planning, maintenance, and landscaping of these great parks.

City Council Spotlight

Councilman Erik Curren

Q: What’s your fondest childhood memory involving recreation?A: Riding my bicycle in Lincoln Park along Lake Michigan in Chicago, the city where I grew up.

Q: Why are Parks and Recreation essential to our community? What are the benefits of park spaces and recreational activities?A: In an age when each of us spends so much time alone looking into a phone screen, recreational activities -- whether a baseball game, an outdoor band concert or a cooking class -- bring us together with our neighbors while helping us meet new friends. Parks are essential to help keep our community strong.

Q: What is your favorite park amenity and why?A: I like the quiet, wooded areas of Montgomery Hall Park. I like the sound of crunching snow among the bare trees on a winter hike or, in summer, sitting down on the grass with a good book.

Dog Park Naming Contest September 1 to September 16

The City is opening its first, off-leash, community dog park later this summer! We want your clever ideas to help us give it the best “doggone” name possible, so we’re hosting a naming contest from Sept. 1 to Sept 16.

Here’s how it will work: • A link will be available on the Staunton Parks and Recreation Facebook account and the City of Staunton website, for your dog park name submissions. • Name entries will be accepted between Sept 1 and Sept 16 only and will be

limited to three per person. • All entries will be compiled and narrowed down to the top three names by the

Staunton Parks and Recreation staff and Rec Commission. • Citizens will vote on the top three names• The winning name submission will be announced prior to the grand opening.

The individual who submitted the winning name will be recognized in the Parks and Recreation brochure, online and at the grand opening of the dog park.

• Stay tuned to our contest sponsor, WHSV-TV3, for details throughout the contest.
