UF/PNPI HV-SystemReminder:• Production and installation is done in two steps (which have

been optimized taking into account the PP-design):– Phase 1: 1920 channels, 56 RDBs, 8 MBs, 6 HCs, + spares

8 patch panels 1:4 for 80% of R4 chambers– Phase 2: additional 1920 channels (total 3840 + spare)

56 RDBs, 8 MBs, 6 HCs, + spares– Additional hardware: - 2 Matsusada HV PS (+1 spare, available)

- 1 Wiener LV PS (+ 1 spare, ordered)

Status:• All Phase 1 hardware delivered, tested and calibrated• Installation and cabling for Q4 completed, basic

commissioning completed, tests ongoing• Installation and cabling for Q3 ongoing• Installation for Q1 and Q2 (A-side) scheduled for next week

UF/PNPI HV-System

Some details of the work in the last 2 weeks:• Hostcards had to be upgraded (from PCI-5V to PCI-X):

Done by Nikolai and Sergey• Hostcard Driver had to be recompiled to operate under SLC4:

Done by Niko and Suman• DIM Server had to be updated: Done by Magnus• Final channel mapping had to be provided and implemented in PVSS:

Done by Michela and BS

Other problems which have been encountered and overcome:• Different HV cables have been delivered by CERN under the same

SCEM (!), which lead to shorts in the SHV connectors. Repair nearly completed now by Oleg, Nikolai and Sergey.

• Additional Noise filters (capacitors) had to be installed on the RDBs due to noise on the LV cables coming from the baracks.

Gas System Commissioning

Gas pipes:• Pipes in the surface building (2870) and in the cavern are new and have

been cleaned prior to installation.• Pipes between the surface building and the cavern are the old DELPHI

pipes. Cleanliness is a concern, despite the great care taken in the past years to keep them clean.

• The C02 line is used since one year to flush the chambers.

• Installation of the pipes for M2-M5 has been completed beginning of October. Any remaining debris have been removed by high pressure purging: 200 bars (!) for 2 minutes. Welds have been X-rayed and found ok. Pressure test done.

• Since October these pipes (including the flexible ones through the cable chain are used to flush the chambers with C02.

• Mechanical filters with 5μm holes are installed in the circuit only on the surface. We are considering to install additional filters in the UXA in the cavern.

Gas System CommissioningGas racks:• All racks have been cabled up and checked by the Gas group (Profibus and

CANbus communication, pneumatic lines, valve and pump control etc.)• The purifier rack has only been delivered last week and the pipes will be welded

only early next week. This holds back the pressure test at present, which has to be done prior to

running the system.

Water and Oxygen contamination:• Measurements have been done in the past weeks on individual chambers to

determine the H20 and O2 contamination.

• H20: ~200 ppm at the input to the MWPCs, ~350ppm after the MWPCs. Not

surprising, as we have 1.5m of Rilsan per chamber and 2km of Rilsan in total in

the system. Need rather large amount of molecular sieve to keep the H20

contamination at the lowest possible level (~200 ppm).

• O2 ~10 ppm at the input to the MWPCs and ~40ppm after the MWPCs. No

particualr concern. Cu will be used to remove the O2.

Optimization of the purifier (sharing molecular sieve / copper to be done in the coming month.

Gas System Commissioning

Plans:• Do pressure tests middle of next week.• Disconnect the lines to/from the chambers, followed by

flushing the system with the final mixture and adjusting the flow per distribution line to the chambers.

This completes the commissioning by the gas group• Check the gas quality by means of a MWPC in the gas

surface building with a radioactive source (monitor current) and compare results for the supply and return lines.

• If result looks ok, connect the chambers on the detector to the gas system just before Christmas.

• A permanent setup to control the gas quality by means of an MWPC and a source will be installed in the UXA early next year with help of CBPF people.

Chamber Test and Installation StatusMissing chambers:• 8 M2R4, 8 M3R4, 4 M4R4 chambers, all in row 1+2 of A-side

They are under production in PNPI and could be ready sometime in February, and at CERN early March.

• They could be ready for installation in early April (just in time)• In order not to hold back the electronics chain commissioning, a simple

board with 3 CARDIACS plus LV-power could be prepared and used for the connectivity tests. (A suggestion.)

Chambers to be fixed:• 1 M2R3, 1 M5R4

Chambers to be tested (after repairs):• 1 M2R1, 2 M2R3

Chamber tests on A-side was painful at the end. The help of Oleg and Nikolai to test CERN chambers due to the notorious lack of manpower was highly appreciated!

A test procedure using the final system (based on ECS tools) has to be developed to test the missing/repaired chambers.

Alignment Status

C-side:• Completed (Only minor correction on M3C-back needed. Will

be done in the background).

A-side:• All drawings have been completed by Thomas• M5A and M4A alignment completed.• M3A back in progress, will be completed next week.• M3A front and M2A to be done in January.We suffer form the lack of manpower due to the

departure of Katharina. Unfortunately NO replacement.

We have to define a procedure on how to replace chambers without loosing the alignment.

DSS Status• DSS reception for the M2-M5 racks has been

done last week (smoke detection and thermo-switch control)

System is activated and power can be left ON in the racks now.

• Water leak detection to be done early next year (no recipient yet). Minor issue.

• Thermo-switches for the Muon stations need to be connected still (to be done in January).

Air Cooling System Status

• Cooling hoses are installed on the C-side. • Cooling hoses will be installed on the A-side after

the alignment is completed (1 day work).• The blowers etc. will be only installed in

February/March, when Thomas has completed the alignment work.

• Additional electrical power required in the muon towers will be put in place by the end of January.

All this is quite a bit later than planned originally, unfortunately.

Moving System Status

• A conceptual design for the Muon Filter and Muon Station moving systems has been prepared (see annex for details)

• It will be implemented in the first quarter of next year and requires – some mechanical work (guides, supports etc.), – electrical circuitry to logically combine control units, end- and

security switches, encoders etc. – An NI control card and some LabVIEW programming.

• The required manpower for the implementation has been identified.

• This postpones the closing tests of the M2-M5 stations to March/April 2008, which is unfortunately very late.

• A more detailed planning will be given in the Muon Meeting in January.

Concept for the Moving Systems General idea:• The Muon Filter Chariot (MFC) on the C-side is in the final

position and fixed.• The A-side MFC is positioned relative to the C-side MFC.

It should be moved only in exceptional cases in the future.• The top rails on the Muon Filters are used as reference for

the correct positioning of the M2-M5 stations (positioning of the General Support Structure (GSS)).

Remark:• Since the cable chains are installed, the GSS can’t be

moved anymore beyond its nominal endpoint (+10cm on A-side). Therefore, whenever the MFC on the A-side has to be moved in the future, this can only be done without the nacelles in place (different to the past).

End- and Security SwitchesMuon Filters:• No End Switches are foreseen for the C-side MFC. It will be blocked!• Security Switches should be installed anyhow.• End- and Security Switches should be installed on the C-side MFC for

the A-side MFC. Installation on the bottom and preferably on the back side (RB 86).

Muon stations:• End- and security switches

should be installed on the top of the Muon Filters for the GSS (M2-M5 station movement).

• In addition an encoder is needed to now the position of the stations during movement, in particular towards the end.

Guides

Muon stations, central part:• No end or safety switches are

foreseen in the center of the stations, only 4 additional special guides per station.

• Oscillations during the station movement should be limited to less than 2mm at x<30cm by means of wedges/shims inside the Muon Filters.

• Good guides exit on the top and bottom of each station.

Control of the moving systems

Muon Filters:• The motor has no special control features (frequency

variator, encoder, torque control etc.), just left right movement via the power cable.

• There is NO need to improve the present equipment: No need for computer controlled movements. Only the end and security switches should be properly integrated in the control box.

Obviously this has to be discussed and approved by the Safety Commission.

Control of the moving systemsMuon Stations:• The motor has no special control features (frequency variator,

encoder, torque control etc.), just left right movement via the power cable.

• Besides the end- and security switches, and in addition to the command box for the operator on the bottom, a command box for the person surveying the movement on the top should be added. Only when the operators give ‘green light’ and the end switches are not in the stop position, the system should move.

Some logic has to be prepared• Due to the fact that the moving system is installed on the bottom, when

moving the GSS the Muon Stations don’t move homogeneously, but in fits and starts. This makes it difficult to get the precise positions.

• An encoder on top and bottom (on bottom maybe with a a laser distance-meter) would be useful to monitor discrepancies between top and bottom. In addition, encoders on top and bottom would allow the exact and reproducible positioning of the stations.

The moving should be computer controlled.

Obviously this has to be discussed and approved by the Safety Commission.

Well adopted to our needs.
