UVa GEM Cosmic setup in EEL124
Bottom trigger layer: 4 scintillators
(~ 15 cm × 200 cm each)
Layer #4
Layer #3
Layer #2
Layer #1
Top trigger layer: 2 scintillators
(~ 25 cm × 150 cm each)
⇨ 4 GEM layers installed and operating on
the cosmic stand
⇨ Each layers made of 4 GEM modules
⇨ 16 modules on the cosmic stand
⇨ Trigger signal:
⇨ coincidence between top and bottom
layers of scint / PMTs
⇨ covers most of the GEM active area
⇨ Tremendous help from Bogdan (Thanks)
⇨ Gas distribute to the GEM
⇨ 2 bottle (outside in EEL 125) at the time
⇨ 10 flow meters ⇨ one for 2 GEM layers

2 Racks for the Electronics, HV PS and Trigger
MPD DAQ & GEM HV PS
⇨ 2 standard VME crates for the MPD electronics
⇨ reading out 14 MPDs each
⇨ Configured to read the first 4 layers in cosmic stand
⇨ Trigger signal distribution (JLab custom module)
⇨ Wiener HV power supply crates for the GEM
⇨ 3 HV modules with 8 channels each
⇨ Enough for 5 layers in the cosmic stand + test of the
layer on assembly table
MPD DAQ & Trigger Rack
⇨ 1 standard VME crates for MPD electronicss
⇨ reading out the 5th layer & test the layer on assembly
table
⇨ 1 VXS crate
⇨ Will be use when we transfer to SSP readout mode
⇨ Bryan and Ben currently working on this
⇨ 1 LeCroy PS crate for the trigger scintillators
⇨ NIM crate for the trigger coincidence logic

GEM HV Wiener Crate
Wiener crate with 3 HV modules
⇨ Currently control with the standalone software
⇨ Will have to migrate the control into EPICs to be able to better
monitor the current and voltage with time
⇨ Working in a very stable way so far
⇨ 16 GEM on the stand powered by 2 modules
⇨ The 3rd modules for the 5 layer and the layer on assembly table
8 modules of layer #3 and layer #4 @ 4.2 V ⇨ current ~763

DAQ PC, Online Monitoring and Analysis Software
New DAQ PC
⇨ We just acquire a new powerful PC for the DAQ and online monitoring of data from the cosmic setup
⇨ Ole, Brad and Bryan have been very helpful installing CODA and the related tools and configuring the PC
⇨ Have enough disc space for the huge amount of cosmic data we will collect with 5 layers
⇨ John Matter will be responsible for the data management of this PC as well as permanent save of the data
Online Monitoring Tool for GEM cosmic data
⇨ John is also working on the upgrade of the existing standalone decoder software (from Siyu) for basic online monitoring
⇨ Will incorporate some additional script recently developed by Andrew to complete the online monitoring
Analysis of the cosmic data
⇨ Andrew has agreed to help us with the analysis of the cosmic data
⇨ This is primary to study track based efficiency as well as spatial resolution performances of the GEM layers with the cosmic
data
⇨ We (John mainly) will be responsible to provide the decoded APV25 data in for of hits as input to Andrew analysis
⇨ We expect to have the first data from the 4 layers currently in the cosmic stand ready for Andrew in the coming weeks
SBS weekly Meeting 7
Layer #2
Layer #3
04/25/2019
Preliminary Cosmic data with first two layers
▪ All 4 layers @ 4050 V on ArCO2 so technically
▪ First round of cosmic with layer #2 & #3 1.5 M triggers event in 1.5 days
▪ Preliminary hit map plots below for the 8 modules of layer #2 & #3
▪ All modules are working very well, no dead sector
▪ Few dead area on two modules that are mostly APV25 issues
▪ We are looking through this
▪ Low efficiency in GEM 0 of layer 2 is due to known issue with the chamber GEM
module #13 ⇨ need to operate at higher A few of our GEM modules have similar
issues due to GEM foil holes parameters we got from CERN ⇨ Not really an issue

Cosmic data yesterday with the other layers
Layer #1
Layer #4
SBS weekly Meeting 9
▪ Second round of cosmic with layer #1 & #4 ⇨1. M triggers event in 1.5 days
▪ Very preliminary hit map plots below for the 8 modules (yesterday evening)
▪ All modules are working very well, no dead sector (Plots below are misleading)
▪ No data in module #2 of layer #1 ⇨ Issue with the 12-slots APV cards MPD module was
disabled during data taking
▪ We are looking through this
▪ 3 of 4 bottom plots show some large partial dead (low hit counts) area on the GEMs
▪ Not a problem on the GEM modules
▪ The 5-slots APV cards of these 3 modules all connected to the same MPD
▪ We suspect something wrong with this MPD ⇨ under investigation
▪ Probably a minor issue
APV25 readout
