Monique: The role of a curator has changed over the years historically. It is no more restricted to car- ing about objects solely. Today, ideas or themes of the exhibition are gaining more popularity than the exhibits. When we go out to collect any object, we bring along with it interesting stories associated with it. We also share them with our patrons. Is there a difference between how people perceive art in India and Pilbara in Western Australia? Sharmila Wood: There are quite a few similarities between Indian and Australian art, especially the craft. The artists from both the countries like to bring alive and experiment with their traditional culture on the canvas. However, the Australian artists love to explore and experiment with aborig- inal art. Crafts are undergoing a renaissance in the content and the best part is that people are taking interest in knowing and learning about the art form. What measures has the Australian government taken to promote aboriginal art? Monique: The Australian government has been providing constant support to art centers. These art centers serve as fantastic hub for the artists. The projects taken up by them are partially funded by the government. The government is also promoting aboriginal art through the National Arts and Crafts Strategy. The government regularly comes up with new strategies to provide support to the aboriginal community so that this famous art does not fade away into oblivion. What are the common challenges faced by an abo- riginal artist? Monique: The artists engaged in aboriginal art form face exploitation at the hands of buyers, who often try and buy aboriginal artwork in unethical ways. I encourage people to buy art works from well known art centers. The major challenge before the artist community today is to ensure that their art form does not die out with them or gets re- stricted to their province only. The preservation of aboriginal languages is another stark challenge. The government has been successful in generating ap- proximately $100 million from aboriginal art. This has prompted the government to realize its worth and explore the various opportunities it offers. They have shown commitment towards tapping and ex- ploiting the art to its fullest potential. Monique & Sharmila: I would encourage every- one to visit Lalit Kala Akademi at least once and enjoy the vivid works by different artists and also revel in the beauty of these art works. India is a democratic country and a strong pro- ponent of equality and secularism, while Pakistan has been predominantly ruled by the military. It is very difficult for them to give up the authoritarian form of gover- nance and adopt the tenets of democracy. S. With the new RBI governorRaghuram Rajan pumping ina new life in the plumetting

rupee, the Indian economy seems to beon a road to revival. Though, we cannotpredict that hard times for the rupee areover, the dramatic rise in the fortune ofthe rupee against the dollar has beengreeted with cheers from economists andthe sagging Indian economy.

The rupee made its second highest gainever of 161 paise against the dollar onSeptember 19 after touching an all-timelow of 65.56 in August 2013. The rupee continued to be on a sinkingspree with the widening current accountdeficit and low forex reserves. Other fac-tors that contributed to the slouchingrupee was the falling GDP which forcedthe foreign buyers to pull out their in-vestments from the country. Even though the government has taken

many measures to arrest the fall of therupee, such as moderation in import ofnon-essential commodities, enhancingsupply of capital flows, it remains to beseen when the rupee would completelyrecover from shock. G T

News: The turmoil in Syria which began with aprotest against President Bashar al-Assad’s regimein 2011 took an ugly turn after 300 people werekilled in a gas attack in Damascus on August 21.The alleged use of chemical arsenal prompted USto threaten Damascus with military strikes. How-ever, the decision was put off after Russia reassuredUS that Damascus would provide full details of itsstockpile within a week and would surrender itschemical arsenal. A much awaited UN report has concluded the use of chemical weapons on alarge scale in the Ghouta area of Damascus. The re-port vindicated the stance taken by US, UK andFrance that Assad’s regime was responsible for theattack. However, Russia deemed the report as one-sided and remained firm on its stand that, Syrian

rebels and not president Bashal al-Assad was re-sponsible for the attacks. The report prompted USSecretary of State John Kerry to call on UN Secu-rity Council to swiftly approve a US-Russia deal toeliminate Syria’s chemical weapons.

Views: I feel it could be possible that the poisonousgas could have been released as a last ditch effort bythe Syrian rebels to suffocate Syrian forces. US hadearlier invaded Iraq to overthrow Saddam Husseinon the pretext of presence of Weapons of Mass De-struction in Iraq. After years of war, the interna-tional inspectors failed to recover any chemicalweapons. The war only led to killing of thousandsof innocent Iraqi citizens. Any military action inSyria will destroy the social fabric of the region andlead to increases terror strikes. If China and Russiasupport the fighting Syrian army to negate thestrength of Syrian rebels, it would result in a neverending war in the region. The power lobby shouldtake a diplomatic road to resolve the crisis and callfor elections under UN supervision.G T

information centre at Hotel Janpath,Delhi on September 6, 2013. The centrewhich was inaugurated by Chhagan Bhu-jbal, minister of tourism, Government ofMaharashtra, amidst grand fan-farewould serve as a one-point-source of informationfor the tourists from North India. “Maharashtra attracts tourists from across the globein large numbers and now we want domestictourists to throng the state and explore its beautyand historic splendour. The state, known for itsbeaches is a must visit for those seeking adventure,spirituality and historical charm,” the minister said.

He also shared that the state from time immemorialis known for its rich culture, art and festivals. Thestate boasts of some natural and historical wonders,apart from housing world heritage sites like Ajanta-Ellora caves, 720km long coastline, pilgrimages

like Shirdi and hill stations like Maha-baleshwar, Panchgani and Matheran.The Tadoba and Pench National Parks,Buddhist Pagoda (Gorai) and Mumbaidraw tourists in large numbers. Meanwhile, Dr Jagdish Patil, managing

director, MTDC, in his interaction with the mediasaid, “MTDC has been taking several progressivesteps to encourage tourism in Maharashtra. Apartfrom opening this new centre in Delhi, we are plan-ning to host a road-show for the tour operators topromote Maharashtra as a preferred tourist destina-tion. The grossly worrisome state ofIndian economy, making head-lines, is clearly visible in infla-

tion. It is pinching aam aadmi sharply.Prices of gold, petrol, gadgets, vehiclesand even essential commodities likeonion and tomato are increasing at afast pace. The government doesn’tseem to take concrete measures to re-store the economy of the country.

Today, the main cause of inflation isthe falling value of the rupee. Manyforeign companies like Walmart etc areexiting the country which is resultingin the slacking of the country’s incomeand lack of job opportunities.Also with the constant increase in im-port of the materials like oil, gold etcfrom foreign countries is further re-ducing the value of the rupee. The gov-ernment must do something to bringthe economy back on track. G T

As tension between India and Pakistancontinues to escalate over repeated vio-lation of ceasefire agreement and be-

heading of Indian soldiers, peaceful andharmonious relations between the two nations ap-pears to be a distant dream. Repeated at-tempts by India to extend an olivebranch to its estranged neighbour hasgarnered a lukewarm response from theother side. The half brother has alwaysrebuked the peace overtures and even back-stabbed India by plotting for Kargil war in its back-yard. The recent border skirmishes and gorykillings are an indicator that Pakistan is not seriousabout giving peace a chance and the so called peacetalks are nothing but a hogwash. Here’s sheddinglight on some major disputes, that have given birthto animosity between India and Pakistan.

Indus water dispute: The two countries dis-agree over the use of the water flowing down therivers which rise in Kashmir and run into the Indusriver basin in Pakistan. The use of the water is gov-erned by the 1960 Indus Water Treaty under whichIndia was granted the use of water from three east-ern rivers, and Pakistan, the use of three westernrivers. Pakistan says India is unfairly diverting itswaters with the upstream construction of barragesand dams. Pakistan is dependent on the water of

these rivers to produce food for its growing popu-lation. India denies any such unfair diversion.

Siachen: India and Pakistan have been engagedin many deadly face off across the Siachen glacierin the Himalayas, also known as the world's high-est battlefield at 5,500 metres. The two sides havebeen planning to demilitarize the region, but Indiasays, it is unwilling to bring its forces down untilPakistan officially authenticates the positions theyhold. Pakistan however, maintains that it is willingto do so only if it is not considered a final endorse-ment of India's claim over the glacier.

Sir Creek: The long-standing dispute is over the100 kilometer Sir Creek estuary flowing into theArabian Sea. The dispute has hampered exploration

of oil and gas and led to the detention ofhundreds of fishermen from the two countries,mostly in areas where the demarcation is not verydistinct. The two sides have conducted a survey andexchanged maps showing their respective positions,but innocent fishermen continue to be caught afterthey accidently trespass into each other’s territory.

Kashmir: The dispute over Kashmir has resultedin three ghastly wars and several border skirmishes.The first full fledged war over Kashmir was foughtin the year 1947 after Pakistani tribal forces fearedthat the Maharaja of Kashmir would accede to thenewly formed state of India so, they attacked andcaptured the princely state. Pakistan has alwaysdoubted the accession accord signed between Indiaand the then Maharaja. Going by Pakistan’s argu-

ment, Jammu and Kashmir, with its majority mus-lim population and close proximity to Pakistan

should have been a part of the Is-lamic Republic of Pakistan, a

theory which has been con-stantly refuted by India. In1965 Pakistan made anotherbid to infiltrate forces in

Jammu and Kashmir to pre-cipitate insurgency. It re-

sulted in a major war,which concluded after the

diplomatic intervention by USA and So-viet Union. Pakistan has not given upon Kashmir yet and has made the state,once popularly known as ‘heaven onearth’ a hotbed of militancy by run-ning terrorist training camps on itssoil. The 1999 Kargil war turned therelations between the two neighbourseven more bitter.

Afghanistan: Afghanistan hasended up becoming a major source of

friction for both India and Pakistan.The two countries have long com-peted for gaining influence there.Pakistan has always viewed ris-ing Indian presence in the region

after the fall of Taliban regime in2001 with suspicion. It has gone a

step further and accused India ofusing Afghanistan as a base to create

problems inside Pakistan, including back-ing separatists in the Baluchistan province. India

denies the accusations, saying its prime focus ison the resurrection, growth and development ofthe war shattered country.

Security: For India, security continues to be oneof the top concerns. The efforts by the two estrangedneighbours to broach peace or resume composite di-alogues have always been shattered by terror at-tacks. India suspects Pakistan for orchestratingterror attacks on its soil, including the deadly Mum-bai attacks which killed over 200 and left over 700injured. Pakistan denies any role in the attack, say-ing the peace process should not be held hostage dueto any act of "non-state actors." The relations be-tween two turned grim after the recent ceasefire vi-olation and beheading of soldiers in Poonch. G T

The city of Firozabad inUttar Pradesh is famousfor its glassware, primarily

glass bangles. It is also known asthe city of bangles. What makesthe bangles manufactured inFirozabad famous is their special‘no joint’ feature ie they have nojoints in them. These bangles arecalled Kadechhal Ki Chudi. Asthis special art required a lot offinesse, earlier only one banglewas made at a time. However, astime passed by and the demandand supply of glassware,especially that of the banglestouched new heights, its prioritygot altered from quality to

quantity. Yet the items producedhere are of superior quality. The history of this glass citydates back to the times, whenforeigners invaded India. Theybrought with them glasswareand other items that wererejected due to a flaw orbreakage or mishandling. thesewere then collected and melted tomanufacture bangles from them.This is how the beautiful glassbangles of Firozabad came intobeing. However, with time,Firozabad has now grown into aproper glass industry and is nowthe biggest manufacturer of glassbangles besides, being the hub ofproduction of various glass items.It is also known all around theworld for its glass art. Cave paintings refer to thepaintings found on thewalls and ceilings of the

caves. The history and traditionof cave paintings in India (UttarPradesh) goes back to prehistorictimes. The earliest discovery ofprehistoric rock art was made inIndia in Uttar Pradesh byArchibald Carlleylet (Twelveyears before the discovery of AltaMira in Spain, which is otherwiseconsidered to be one of the firstand finest findings). Archibald Carlleyle, a renownedarchaeologist discovered rockpaintings at Sohagihat inMirzapur district of UttarPradesh in 1867 and 1868. Hisfindings were published muchlater, as they were thought to be

lost with his death, until theywere found with a friend. Sonbhadra, the second largestdistrict of Uttar Pradesh, isknown for its cave paintingsfound in the Vindhya region. The cave paintings here depictscenes of hunting, war, festivals,dances, daily life and animals.The Lakhania caves, located inthe ranges that run through the

state of Uttar Pradesh are knownfor their beautiful ageless rockpaintings. These historicpaintings are nearly 4000 yearsold and bring to life the cultureand beliefs of an ancient era.Khodwa Pahar or Ghoramangaris another well known ancientcave painting site and the hillockis also home to world famousKaua Khoh rock shelter. design has a different storyor tale corresponding to that stateto tell. It is known by differentnames in different states. It isknown as Kolam in Tamil Nadu,

Mandana in Rajasthan, Aipan inKumaon, Alpana in West Bengaland Aripana in Bihar.

stows godly powers to anyone who offers themprosperity in health and business or solace ofmind and soul. And when that person is a‘swami’, there are no questions raised. For he isthe undisputed good man who preaches that theperfect way to be happy is to unite with God.The best way to do so is by doing everything welearn every day in our moral science class. Yet, when we look around, things are not thesame as what we were taught. As a child, I vis-ited the 69th Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Ka-makoti Peetham in his ashram with my fatherwho wanted to present him with copy of ‘Ba-jjika Ramayan’. The enlightening aura aroundthat ashram touched me. When Shankaracharyablessed us with a yellow silk garland, it was themost precious ornament I possessed. His intel-lect, austerity and service to humanity made aneverlasting impression. When he was arrestedon charges of murder, I was shocked. Everytime,I looked at the garland adorning my bookshelf,I could not decide to keep it or remove it. Ithought over it again and again as many dotoday who believed in Asararam Bapu. Yet, tosay that all Godmen are tainted would be wrongtoo. What is important is to learn to have thewisdom to differentiate between good and bad.Between man and God. I understood – “There is no such thing as a goodMuslim or a bad Muslim, and a good Hindu ora bad Hindu; there are only good people and badpeople”. An old wooden table with arather obscure aroma, that’swhere she kept me. From her

happiness to her sorrows, I had wit-nessed it all. But most of all she wrotein me, her forlorn attempts of escaping

her gloomy life. It was a life she didnot want and a punishment she did notdeserve. She was a very talentedpainter who had the capability oftouching the zenith, but belonged to afamily which was nothing short of anightmare. She felt suffocated, likesomeone was watching her everymove... she felt alone even when sur-rounded by a bunch of people, isolatedherself when in doubt and had startedremaining perennially frustrated. Now a Grade 11 student, Saumya usedto be the life and soul of all parties a

few months back. Today, she sat in adark corner beneath the wooden stair-case wondering, “Why have my par-ents taught me to become independent,to think, to know what’s right for mewhen in the end it had to come to noth-ing?” The question had lingered in hermind for too long. Sitting there, shethought of the day she got the formsfor selecting subjects for Class XI. Shehad enthusiastically gone to her par-ents and told them that she wanted topursue fine arts; she had not even com-pleted her sentence when they inter-

vened and said in a firm tone thatpainting had no future and she wouldbe taking up science. Painting meant the world to her, aworld which was shattered into pieceson hearing those authoritative words.She had no choice but to follow theirorders. Every day, she felt as if some-thing within her had died. She had lostall her liveliness. She wasn’t allowedto paint, couldn’t talk to her friendsand would cry herself to sleep. Herparents thought they were doing thebest for her but paid no attention tohow she felt. If this story feels like yours, this is awake up call for you to stop existingand start living. For children who havepassions contrasting to their parents,and parents who believe that theirchild is an extension of their personal-ity, just pause and rethink. Debate, dis-cuss but do not ever give up on whatyou really want in life. If youngsterswill pursue fields they are interestedin, their chances of doing well wouldincrease manifold. Also, they willmake for happier, well adjusted and re-sponsible citizens. After all, we liveonly once. Isn’t it better to be allowedto follow our dreams and be given achance to fulfill them?G T

They say, educate a girl child andyou educate the country. Thisholds even true today when the

country is reeling under turbulent cir-cumstances. Be it underdevelopment,disrespect for women or rising crimesagainst women, the root cause of theproblem is the lack of stress on womeneducation. Let’s track the problem andfind probale solutions to it: Identifying the problem: In a family,especially, the rural areas, if only boysare allowed to go to school and thegirls are made to sit at home, itamounts to sowing the seed of discon-tentment and gender inequality at thefamily level itself. Such discontent-ment takes an ugly turn during thegrowing stages in both boys and girls. Solutions in offing: To ensure thatsuch disparities don’t breed, the gov-

ernment has made elementary educa-tion mandatory for both boys and girls.In order to motivate the girls’ families,the government has launched severalschemes that offer scholarships, freebooks, uniforms and if possible, freetransport too. In Gujarat, education for girls is freeupto graduation level. Sending girls toschools, especially co-educational in-stitutions helps the boys to develop re-spect for them.Such tolerance in boyscan go a long way in restraining actsof violence towards them.Today, girlsare doing better than boys in mostspheres including fighting wars orpeace time policing.They are physio-logically and biologically stronger innature and share extra pressure alongwith their parents in various householdactivities. An educated girl can inde-pendently manage her finances justlike boys as against the traditionalmindset that only men can be the bread

winners of the family. Women are increasingly holding im-portant political, legal, executive andcorporate positions. If the heads ofstates of all countries are women, therewill be less chances of wars as womenare more compassionate.They are veryefficient at resolving conflict.Probable solutions: It is suggested

that government can also offer incen-tives like government jobs for thosewho have sent their daughters toschool. They want to see their familiesand loved ones happy and developingin every sphere of life. Hence, if wewant to build a vibrant and happy to-morrow, we should support girls’ edu-cation today. G T

It is the fruition of endlessyears of struggle against social norms by peoplewho thought ahead of their times and took uponthemselves the mantle of lighting up the lives offuture generations. The road to literacy via education builds abridge from misery to hope. Literacy is thebiggest weapon to fight poverty, the greatestasset of a nation. It gives voice to the mute andears to the deaf. It is an agent of good health andnutrition. Literacy offers a platform for theprogress of the country. As another Literacy Day goes by, the youthshould realise that they have to shoulder the re-sponsibility of making India a 100% literatecountry. Even though education has made greatstrides in penetrating the remotest corners of thecountry, there are many areas which are stillunder literary darkness. It is you, who have tobear the torch of literacy and take educationeverywhere. For in education, lies the answer toall human problems. In literacy, lies the path tohuman progress. G T

The world is a smallplace for someonewho can’t read. Basicsignage, medicationlabels, job applica-tions: all of it becomes inaccessible,and the chances of a healthy and pro-ductive life are slim. Hence, with theaim to highlight the importance of lit-eracy to individuals, communities andsocieties, September 8 was pro-claimed as International LiteracyDay by UNESCO on November 17,1965. On International Literacy Dayeach year, UNESCO reminds the in-ternational community of the statusand significance of literacy and adultlearning globally.

How we taught……step by step, bit by bit

Our domestic helper Sonali aunty couldrecognise numbers and could sign andwrite in Bengali. However, what shewanted to learn the most was how to usethe mobile phone so that she could calland be in touch with her parents back inthe village. So, I took it on me to teachher. I showed her the call and end but-tons. I would sit with her everyday forfifteen minutes and teach her to use theredial key, the speaker key and the vari-ous functions available on the menu op-tion. Now, I can proudly say that Sonaliaunty is able to use the mobile phonewith confidence and need not depend onanyone to make or receive calls from hernear and dear ones.

MethodFor the dip/sauce� Melt the butter. Add flour to it and

cook for a few seconds.� Add milk. Cook and stir continu-

ously until the mixture attains athicker consistency.

� Add salt and keep it aside, to cool.

For the croquettes� Grind the cooked corn slightly � Mix corn, rice, a portion of dip, cel-

ery, green chillies and salt. � Shape into flat rounds/ovals or

balls, as per your choice.� Put a little grated cheese in the cen-

tre and close it well.� Make a batter by mixing ½ teacup

of water with the plain flour.� Dip the croquettes into this paste,

roll over bread crumbs and deep fry. � Just before serving, add pepper to

the remaining dip. Serve it withsteaming hot croquettes.G T

few minutes, Abu returned wearing aterrified look, he was trembling withfear and had turned pale. Seeing Abu inthis condition a worried Azhar askedhim, “What happened Abu? Why aresweating so profusely?” A scared Abureplied, “Master, when I went down tothe market, I saw death. It wore a

horrifying expression. Master, I amreally scared. I request you to lend meyour fastest horse so that I can rideaway to Samarah in no time, to escapedeath.” A concerned master lent him hishorse and Abu rode away as fast as hecould. Some time later, Azhar went tothe market. He spotted death too. Onseeing death, he couldn’t help but ask,“Why did you make a threateninggesture when you saw my servant,Abu?” Death replied, “Oh! I’m sorrysir, I had not intension to threaten him,I was surprised to find Abu in Baghdadas I had an appointment with himtonight in Samarah.” Soon realisation dawned on Azhar andhe understood that it was difficult toescape one’s fate. As the aeroplane taxied at the airport inIndia, I looked outside the window. Thesprawling city of Delhi, that was going to

be my new home for the coming year, looked invit-ing from the sky also. I was extremely excited.Even while in the flight, I could tell that my newhome was going to be different from my home backin Utah. I was only not quite sure what to expect

from my stay in a foreign land. So far, my experi-ence in India has been amazing. I have an incredi-bly kind and supportive host family and manywonderful friends. Everyday I am surprised by allthe new things I encounter or experience. Whilemany of them are similar to what happens in myhometown, there are quite a few that are new to me.It is great to see how green it is here. Every free

space is utilised to grow something unlike, SaltLake City ( in Utah), which is a desert. Another thing that I found very different is the sizeof the population. Wherever you look there is aswarm of people.Within a few weeks of my stay inDelhi, I have been left astound by all the varietythat I have come across. I am so blessed to have thiswonderful opportunity of spending time here and Ican’t wait to see and experience what my stay inIndia has to offer me. In his thrilledvoice, he called out to his father andsaid, “Dad, it is amazing to see the land-scape and green trees fade away.” Thisbehaviour from a 30-year-old man

evoked all kind of comments from fel-low travellers, some of them were reallyloud while others a bit muffled! Sud-denly it started to rain. As the rain lashedheavily, it drenched the travellers. Un-able to contain his excitement, Rahulcried out, “Dad! Look, how beautiful therain is!”Seeing Rahul react in this manner, ayoung teenager who had been observinghim for sometime, mumbled to himself,“Here, my new attire has got soiled inrain and this guy thinks rains are beauti-ful?” He told Rahul’s father, “Your son

might be enjoying the rain but, it is not apleasant feeling to have one's new attirecompletely drenched in the rain. Sir,please ask your son to refrain from mak-ing such loud comments about theweather and disturb the fellow passen-gers, who are not so excited to see thesenormal everyday occurrences.” The old man hesitated a bit and thenreplied, “We are sorry for the inconven-ience caused, but my son got dischargedfrom the hospital today morning only.He has recently attained his vision. Hewas not blessed with sight at the time ofbirth. He is getting ecstatic at the sightof everything. I apologise on his behalf.”Hearing this the teenager hung his headin shame. Method� Preheat oven to 175°C. Cut the

loaf/baguette into 2 -3 cm slices.� Chop and mince garlic finely.

� Add the minced garlic to the butter� Add seasoning as per your taste. � Now spread the garlic butter evenly

over the bread loaf. � Sprinkle grated cheese and some

sesame seeds on it.� Now, wrap the bread loaf gently in

an aluminum foil and seal its endsproperly.

� Place the wrapped loaf in the ovenand bake it for about 7 to 10 min-utes or till golden brown.

The tiny tots of Amiown PushpVihar learnt about various as-pects of the world of plants in a

playful manner, in the month of Augustdedicated to the theme “The world ofplants.”

Amiown provided ample opportunitiesto the little Amies to increase theirawareness of the world around them.The little ones joyfully participated invarious projects and integrated activitiesthrough which they learnt the basics ofthe role of plants in our daily lives andfor our health and environment. Theywere taught that just like we need air tobreathe, plants too need air to breathe.

They also require water and sunlight togrow and to make their own food.It was a feast for the eyes to watch thechildren,- the natural gardeners, learn bydoing things on their own. Curiosity wasclearly visible on their innocent faces,signifying how much they were willingto learn. They enjoyed gardening inschool, went on nature walks andthereby learnt about how plants grow,

different types of plants and flowers, theproducts we get from plants and treesetc. Since instilling values and ethics inchildren is an essential part of Amiown’sphilosophy, the tots were also taughthow to lovingly take care of plants andwere also encouraged to grow trees.To add fun to the learningprocess, a unique class presentation onplants, aptly titled ‘Our green world’ was

put up on September 7, 2013 as part ofthe regular parent partnership pro-gramme. The parents of children werealso invited. As the school turned into anamazing world of plants, each class de-picted their special aspect such as ger-mination, kitchen garden, creepers andclimbers, orchards, buds and blossoms.The breathtaking and colourful displaysin each class made the vibrant world ofplants truly come alive. The event that created long lasting mem-ories and inculcated love for plants in thelittle ones was graced by the presence ofMs Sapna Chauhan, Vice Chairperson,Amiown & ACERT. She interacted withparents and the children, and exploredthe world of plants with them.Watching their little ones excitinglygrasp age appropriate information andamazing facts about plants made parentsfeel proud. The parents thanked teachersfor this exclusive event and expressedhow much they wished that such eventsand concrete learning processes were apart of their own school life as well.The event culminated with the little onesgorging on yummy snacks.G T

Storytelling sessions have always been a spe-cial tradition of Amiown where captivatingand innovative techniques are used to help

little ones grasp as well as enjoy stories. In this di-rection, the Saturday Club of Amiown added an-other feather to its colourful cap on Saturday,August 31, when the little Amies got together foran enthralling story session. Conducted in twoslots, this special story session was graced by thepresence of Ms Sapna Chauhan, Vice Chairperson,Amiown & ACERT. This time the session was con-ducted by Priya Kurian, a renowned illustrator ofchildren’s books and magazines. She personallynarrated the story of Radhika Chadha’s award-win-ning book ‘Snoring Shanmugam’ whose illustra-tions were done by the illustrator herself.The children listened with rapt attention as theywere narrated the story of a lazy, snoring lionnamed ‘Shanmugam’ and other animals whowanted to wake him up to defend them all. The

story came alive with the colourful illustrations ofthe story characters and events. The Amies had funmimicking the characters from the story. The littleones were also involved in an art and craft activityto tap their creativity. Later, they were asked tomake a portrait of any of the characters from thestory, of which they did a wonderful job. The gemsdelightfully carried their own copy of the storybookto enjoy the story at home with their family. G T

Under the benevolent guidance ofDr (Mrs) Amita Chauhan,Chairperson, Amity Group of

Schools, ‘The Japan English LearningProgramme’ was organised under theaegis of AERC from July 22 to August16, 2013 at AIS Pushp Vihar. The 25 daylong programme was aimed at providingJapanese students an opportunity tolearn English language and at the sametime acquaint Amity students withJapanese culture. By the end of the pro-gramme the Japanese students not onlylearnt English but also got familiarisedwith Indian culture. They enjoyed theirshort stay with the Amity students andtheir families. The programme commenced with thetraditional welcome accorded by youngAmitians, school principal AmeetaMohan, vice principal Divya Bhatia andheadmistress Shalini Khanna. Theschool Head boy and Head girl tookthem on a tour of the campus. This wasfollowed by an orientation programmewhich was conducted by Jyoti Arora,

Head AERC; Divya Arora, director,AFS; Medhavi Arora and Nikita Choud-hary, AFS volunteers; and Amitians,who had earlier been associated with the

programme. AFS volunteers tried to ac-quaint the students with the new envi-ronment, discuss do’s & don’ts, shareemergency information and school rules

& regulations. The exchange studentsattended regular classes at the schooland each day was packed with interest-ing and learning activities. They also presenteda skit titled Sanskar, highlighting the importance ofgrandparents in our lives. As a token of love thechildren presented cute handmade gifts to their re-spective grandparents. With tears of joy in the eyes,the grandparents showered love and blessings ontheir grandchildren. Students of Class X had the au-dience in splits when they re-galed everyone with their satireand humour in the hasya kavisammelen on the topic ‘Contem-porary political problems’. Yesterday was my relative’sbirthday party and I reached home lateat night.

Bunking a periodFaking an illness: I have a headache.May I go to the medical room? Faking a story: A student told me that ateacher was calling me.

Not completing homeworkForgetting/losing the notebook: I hadmistakenly left my notebook in the class.I couldn’t find my notebook.And there’s a miscellaneous list too! G T

Over the years the baba-bug has bittenIndian households, with the promiseof transforming lives, solving

problems and helping them get closer toGod. The godmen seem to have longperfected the art of fooling people in thename of spirituality and have successfullyevolved into a huge social nuisance. We’vehad enough of these people telling us whatto do; it’s high time we told them what not todo. Here are 5 commandments we want ourgodmen to live by.

Don’t mess with politicsThey’re men of God, but there are some areas of our lives wesimply don’t appreciate their divine intervention in. We mightaccept spiritual guidance from them, but we’re tired of our god-men trying to tell us who to vote for and when to protest.

Don’t drive around in BMWs and AudisPlease don’t tell us to denounce all the materialistic pleasuresof this world and be content and happy with what we have, whileyou enter the pravachan tent (where we’ve been waiting for you,sweating our faces off for an hour), in an Audi. Also, the onlything that keeps us united as a nation is the feeling of having en-dured a typical Indian traffic jam together . So don’t tell us thatwe must take every bad thing in life positively, when you don’teven have to drive the car on your own. First follow what you

preach and then introduce us to words like tyag, moh maya

Don’t disrespect womenOur godmen have more than a few successful unethical racketsand cases to their merit. And neither do they reserve their ar-chaically patriarchal comments about how to control thesecrimes. Well, maybe you could start with setting an ex-ample and not indulging in these far-from-pious activities.Please don’t be a major reason we believe in your ghor kalyugaa chuka hai theory.

Don’t stealDonations, it seems, go a long way in helpingsome people get filthy rich, very quickly.They have mansions, cars, phones, watchesand even parallel businesses running out ofthe money that apparently comes fromwhat their devotees pay. They have madespirituality a business. Of course, Godshowers his benevolence upon a fewspecial godmen, and they bag themuch coveted prize of having a bigindustrialist on their list of devotees.And the others are blessed enough tohave brains to run a scam, and make a for-tune for themselves. But if you preach honesty, then please, dohave the decency to practice it to some extent, at least.

Don’t claim to be GodThis one is perhaps, the most important commandment of all.Don’t trick the ever-believing masses into thinking that you’reGod, because you’re not. So if the first four seem to be a toughset of rules to live by, then perhaps you should rethink yourproclamation of beaing a godman. G T
