Purpose of survey

IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred on the Minister of Finance and Development Planning by section 15 of the Statistics Act, the following Regulations are hereby made —

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Statistics (Demographic Survey) Regulations, 1987.

2. The Government Statistician may direct any authorised officer to conduct a survey on the general demographic, educational, economic and migration characteristics of members of households in Botswana in accordance with these Regulations.

3. The purpose of the survey is to provide demographic data required for up-dating population estimates and projections in Botswana, and particularly to provide statistics on —

(a) levels and age patterns of fertility and correlates of fertility at the national and urban-rural setting;

(b) levels and age patterns of mortality and correlates of mortality at the national and urban-rural setting; and

(c) levels and age patterns of internal and international migrations.4. (1) The authorised officers shall —(a) enumerate persons who have lived in randomly selected dwellings

during any period in which the survey is to be taken, at such times (excluding the hours between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.) as may be expedient;

(h) ask such questions of any person so enumerated as may be necessary in order to obtain in respect of that person the information refererred to in regulation 5.

(2) The interviews shall be conducted in two rounds with an interval of approximately six months between the first and the second rounds.

5. The information to be obtained by the authorised officer in respect of any person shall be the information specified in the Schedule hereto.
