Introduction

The California Organic Products Act (COPA), signed into law in 2003, providesprotection to producers, processors, handlers and consumers in that foods producedand marketed as organic must meet specified standards. As part of the regulatory

process, COPA requires annual registration of all processors, growers and handlers ofcommodities labeled as organic. State registration is separate from, and does not act asa substitute for, organic certification. State law mandates registration administered bythe California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) while federal law mandatescertification by a USDA accredited third-party organization.

This publication quantifies the current size and growth of the organic industry inCalifornia in terms of acres, farm gate sales and number of growers statewide and bycommodity, commodity group, county, and region based on CDFA registration data from2005 - 2009. Values for 2005 have been updated since the May 200 7 StatisticalReview of Californias Organic Agriculture: 2000 2005. The six major commodity

group classifications presented in this report include: field crops; fruit and nut crops;livestock, dairy, poultry and apiary products; nursery, greenhouse and floriculture;pasture and rangeland; and vegetable crops. The 2007 report did not include rangelandand pasture as a separate category and included those values under field crops andlivestock. The state s counties are divided into eight geographic regions based onsimilar groupings used by CDFA in their annual statistical reports (Figure 1).

When interpreting the data, the following points should be considered. The numberscontained in this publication are derived solely from information provided in the annualregistration forms of organic growers. In other words, the numbers are presented asreported to CDFA by growers. Only sales from products marketed as organic arerequired to be reported to CDFA. This means that income from sales of organicallygrown products sold in the conventional market may not be included. Income fromgovernment payment is not reported.

In this report, acreage was calculated by tallying only crop production acres. Land thatwas double or multiple cropped was counted as one crop acre. Fallow land and landutilized for roads, houses and farm buildings were excluded from the analysis. Theacreage reported here includes only those acres from which growers reported organicsales.

Finally, when interpreting the total number of growers, the sum of the subcategoriesmay not equal the total because some individual growers have reported in multiplesubcategories. For example, a grower producing vegetables and fruit will count as onevegetable grower and one fruit grower, and still only account for one of the total numberof growers. Simply adding the number of vegetable growers to the number of fruitgrowers would result in double counting. Similarly, a grower producing wheat and corncounts as one corn grower and one wheat grower but only one of the total number offield crop producers.
