Statement of Problem

1
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM This study was conducted in a small rural community of Cedar Hill Village, Princes Town; South Trinidad at which an investigation was therefore undertaken to determine the extent to which the residents of Cedar Hill Village take public awareness campaigns on Natural Disasters seriously and the ways in which this can affect their preparedness for such calamities. Geologically, this location was chosen mainly due to past occurrences of natural disasters, primarily severe flooding, which distorted and affected the entire community. Presently, the village is still a high risked area for flooding due to its undulating and flat terrain and other natural hazards such as seismic activities. In addition, this location was selected due to the availability and accessibility of direct information, which makes this study less costly and effective. There is much relevance in selection of the topic of Natural Disasters as geographically, Trinidad and Tobago lies in the tropics (which experiences diverse weather conditions and are affected by storms, hurricanes and tropical waves.) Unlike most of the other Caribbean islands, both Trinidad and Tobago have frequently escaped the wrath of major devastating hurricanes, but the hurricane belt is dropping which may cause havoc to the country. In addition to this, the country lies along continental plate margins (which may cause seismic activity). It is therefore critically important as a nation to be aware and prepared for any natural hazard to mitigate the risk so that the effect may be lessened.
