Hopefully, making your way through Lent brings a sense of winter going away and spring being ushered in. The word “lent” doesn’t mean darkness and despair; rather, Lent is about spring time. We began Lent in winter, and we end in spring. Hopefully, Lent also represents an awakening in our spiritual lives. It’s a time when the darkness of sin makes way to a new light – the love of God shining brighter in our soul.

There is the old saying: “spring cleaning.” In our spiritual lives, we can become lethargic, taking the Lord and his Grace for granted. We become lethargic when we don’t make our daily prayer, the Mass and works of charity a priority. We relegate our relationship with the Lord to an occasional conversation. This type of behavior is not good for us. Actually, it is quite dangerous, because it allows evil spirits to enter and make a home in our soul. The darkness creeps in slowly and, thus, we become more and more lethargic spiritually. The problem? It happens so gradually that we don’t even realize it. Evil loves this approach. Sneaky and quiet. The Church, in her wisdom, knows how the evil one works; thus, she started us out on Ash Wednesday with the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus states that prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the best way to clean house, clean the soul, and prepare us for a better relationship with the Lord. The question I have for you - how are you doing with your commitment to prayer, fasting and almsgiving? The opportunities for prayer are sometimes too many to list. Start with a daily Mass during the week. Use the Mass/Prayer Journal that we offered you in the last two weeks and see how that works. You may be surprised. Don’t forget to go to confession...NOW. Not Holy Week. The soul needs it now more than closer to Easter. How about sacrificing and taking 15 minutes a day to be still, open your heart, speak to the Lord and listen. The Lord will speak to your soul. Trust in God. Don’t always look for a sign or a feeling in prayer. Just be faithful to your time with the Lord. Fast from the things that create bad habits and or are unhealthy for the body. It is never too late to start! Almsgiving is an annual parish endeavor by contributing to the CSA. If we all sacrifice together, we all become stronger. As a parish, I want us to be stronger spiritually and fall deeper in love with the Lord. If Lent helps us accomplish this, I will be thrilled. Your soul is of the utmost importance for me. Finally, I want to let you know that we are going to strip and restore the marble in the sanctuary of the church. The company said it will take about three days, and they will start on Monday, March 12. It will not affect the Sunday liturgy schedule. Daily Mass will be in church, and Mass will be celebrated at the St. Joseph altar (similar to what we did last year when we redid the ceiling). To think it was a year ago at this time that the church was under construction redoing

the tired ceiling. It looks beautiful today and well worth the effort. Gratefully, the floor will not be an extensive project, but I wanted you to know. So, you may want to take note of what it looks like before and then after. I’m sure you will be amazed! In prayer during our Lenten journey,

In the early Church, the heresy of Pelagianism taught that it is possible to achieve holiness and salvation by simply trying harder. This “pull yourselves up by your bootstraps” theology can still plague us today from time to time when we believe the subtle lie that maybe, just maybe, that growth in the Church can be reducible down to how hard we try. The lie continues that if we simply try harder

to evangelize, then we will see positive results. The backwards idea that evangelization, or any good work in the Church succeeds due to our own efforts only leads to frustration and exhaustion. In trying to depend fully upon ourselves, we can fall into the error of activism which says that our action and our work is enough.

Instead of simply relying on our own ability, evangelization will only be fruitful if we rely on God. One way that God is calling us to rely on Him is through the gifts or charisms that He has given each one of us through baptism. Each one of us has been given one or more charisms by God for the building up of the Church. There are various lists in Scripture of these charisms that God gives to us. One such example can be found in 1 Corinthians 12:27-31:

These gifts of apostleship, prophecy, teaching, administration, healing, assistance, leadership and tongues are all given not for personal holiness but for the whole Body of Christ, the Church. Today, in the Church, there has been a resurgence in the recognition that we should desire these charisms that God wants to give to us and that these charisms are necessary if our work of evangelization is to be fruitful. One of the best evangelists of the last century, Pope St. John Paul II had this to say about charisms:

As a parish, I pray that we may begin anew to beg the Holy Spirit to show us the charisms that he has for each one of us so that we may offer it for the upbuilding of the Body of Christ and our work of unleashing the Gospel.

Meet Candidate Katelyn DeRoche: Growing up I was never a par t of church or a specific religion. I have always had a desire to learn more about religion but never actually took that next step. After meeting my fiancé John and attending Mass with him, he inspired me to learn more about the Church. After getting

engaged I knew that this was a process that I need to begin not only for our marriage and our future children, but for myself and to grow my own relationship with Jesus. The RCIA program has been such an uplifting experience for me. I have learned so much in such a short period of time and very thankful that the Church of Divine Child gave me this opportunity. Katelyn’s Sponsor, John D’Aguammo: I was really honored when my fiancé Katelyn asked me to be her sponsor. I always felt that I was knowledgeable in the Catholic Church and faith but as I listen to her talk about her classes, she is the one that is teaching me. The RCIA program is helping her learn and grow into a Catholic as well as opening my eyes to lessons that I took for granted. For that I would like to thank the RCIA program. It will help us grow together as a couple and a family.

The Spirit Convicts “Pope Francis has stated that we must stop masquerading before God in relation to our sin. We must take seriously the reality and nature of sin and the impact that sin has in our lives. It is not an exaggeration to say that our attitude toward sin has eternal consequences. Sin wounds and at times destroys our relationship with Christ. The Spirit of God convicts us of our sin not to condemn us but to convert us. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT …ARE WE THERE YET??

As we inch our way toward Easter, the idea of “new birth” has many meanings. Of course the obvious is the Resurrection of our Lord, there is also the cleansing Waters of Baptism and the springtime of new life that will begin to surround us. It is truly a time for new beginnings and what better time than Lent to prepare ourselves for this new birth! At every Major Degree, Knights of Columbus are reminded of the Precepts of the Church.

You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

You shall confess your sins at least once a year. You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy Communion at

least during the Easter season. You shall keep holy the holy days of obligation. You shall observe the prescribed days of fasting and

abstinence. As we all know, we are called to attend weekly Mass and holy days of obligation. Most Catholics receive Communion regularly and we are all aware of the days of fast and abstinence as we run from parish to parish to support their Friday Fish Fries. But do we know, as Catholics we are called to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year? Here at Divine Child confessions are heard every Saturday from 3:00pm - 3:45pm and after the 4:30pm Mass (and by appointment most any other time you need). There are usually three priests on Saturdays who avail themselves to hear confessions and often times there is a bit of a wait. We may feel that we are not in a “state of sin” and we have no need of the Sacrament. The priest “persona Christi” is in the confessional in the person of Christ, to hear us tell God our Father that we are sorry for our sins and to ask His forgiveness. Our sins are always forgiven when we ask God to forgive us, allowing our sinful ways to be washed away and help us to start again brand new. It is almost like having a reset button! We need to feel the mercy of God and confession is good for the soul, really! As we make our way to Easter, why not take the opportunity in the last few weeks of Lent to celebrate the Sacrament. It is ok if you haven’t been in a while, a year, many years or a really long time! You don’t need to print out a list of sins and recite them, it’s not like that anymore! Open the door and begin the conversation. If you are not comfortable, ask the priest to help you along. You are not the first person to have been away so long. We are fortunate to have great, understanding and compassionate priests here at Divine Child. Open your heart to God’s mercy and let the healing begin.

other men to become a Knight)

Have you ever thought about becoming a Knight, but think that being a member will consume too much of your time. Well, NO MORE EXCUSES! The time has come and the Knights of Columbus has created a pilot membership program in certain jurisdictions. Michigan has been chosen to help launch this new E-Membership Program.

Knights of Columbus E-Membership has some of the same benefits as Degreed Knighthood. Your $30.00 annual e-membership dues will include:

A Welcome Package with a membership card (giving access to KofC lounges throughout the country, but not council meetings), Columbia magazine, and a copy of the “Into the Breach.”

Access to the Online Membership Portal including its faith, values, insurance and charitable content.

Membership Communications including weekly emails from the Supreme Council on a variety of topics.

Program and Events: local, regional and national in which members may participate.

Columbia Magazine and other fraternal publications Affordable Insurance available to purchase for members,

their spouses and dependent children. Accidental Death Coverage where eligible members and

spouses are automatically enrolled in the Order’s accidental death coverage at no cost.

Annual Financial Review by a KofC insurance agent.

This is a stepping point for men to become part of this Catholic Men’s Fraternity without declaring any affiliation to a particular council or attending any meetings. When the time comes and you decide you are ready to pick a Council and attend meetings, then you would contact a council of your choosing and go through a Degree Ceremony to transition into a Degreed Knight. Your e-membership dues would be credited towards your annual council dues.

If you are interested in E-Membership, you can check out www.kofc.org/joinus. With a few clicks of your mouse, you can become an E-Member. It might be an ideal situation for young college men or men that are just too busy to become involved. Of course, the intent is to eventually have you become a degreed active knight in a council. If you are ready to take the E-Membership step, I would ask you to consider becoming a Degreed Knight of Bishop Foley Council and really experience the fraternity of Foley brothers. But the choice is yours and the E-Membership option is available.

WELCOME NEW FOLEY KNIGHT!

Last Sunday, Bishop Foley Council welcomed its newest knight into our order. Ryan Mangulabnan became a 3rd Degree Foley Knight. Ryan is a 2016 graduate of Divine Child High School and a current Pre-med student at Wayne State University.

The major degree was held at Fr. Saylor Council in Allen Park. Ryan will work with his Brother Foley Knights to defend our Catholic faith and enjoy the fraternity and friendship the Knights of Columbus as we work together for our causes.

The time has come and the Knights of Columbus has created a pilot membership program in certain jurisdictions. Michigan has been chosen to help launch this new E-Membership Program.

Knights of Columbus E-Membership has some of the same benefits as Degreed Knighthood. Your $30.00 annual e-membership dues will include:

A Welcome Package with a membership card (giving access to KofC lounges throughout the country, but not council meetings), Columbia magazine, and a copy of the “Into the Breach.”

Access to the Online Membership Portal including its faith, values, insurance and charitable content.

Membership Communications including weekly emails from the Supreme Council on a variety of topics.

Program and Events: local, regional and national in which members may participate.

Columbia Magazine and other fraternal publications Affordable Insurance available to purchase for members,

their spouses and dependent children. Accidental Death Coverage where eligible members and

spouses are automatically enrolled in the Order’s accidental death coverage at no cost.

Annual Financial Review by a KofC insurance agent.

This is a stepping point for men to become part of this Catholic Men’s Fraternity without declaring any affiliation to a particular council or attending any meetings. When the time comes and you decide you are ready to pick a Council and attend meetings, then you would contact a council of your choosing and go through a Degree Ceremony to transition into a Degreed Knight. Your e-membership dues would be credited towards your annual council dues.

If you are interested in E-Membership, you can check out www.kofc.org/joinus. With a few clicks of your mouse, you can become an E-Member. It might be an ideal situation for young college men or men that are just too busy to become involved. Of course, the intent is to eventually have you become a degreed active knight in a council. If you are ready to take the E-Membership step, I would ask you to consider becoming a Degreed Knight of Bishop Foley Council and really experience the fraternity of Foley brothers. But the choice is yours and the E-Membership option is available.

Last Sunday, Bishop Foley Council welcomed its newest knight into our order. Ryan Mangulabnan became a 3rd Degree Foley Knight. Ryan is a 2016 graduate of Divine Child High School and a current Pre-med student at Wayne State University.

The major degree was held at Fr. Saylor Council in Allen Park. Ryan will work with his Brother Foley Knights to defend our Catholic faith and enjoy the fraternity and friendship the Knights of Columbus as we work together for our causes.

Right to Life - LIFESPAN Putting a “Baby Face” on Pro-Life DO YOU KNOW? Here is a story from Karen Patrosso, the Director of LIFESPAN’s Wee Care Program. The beautiful baby Angel arrived early-very early! She weighed just over 1 pound. When she reached 2 pounds, her mom’s social worker called with great news! Against all odds, it looked like this tiny fighter was going to make it. Angel’s mom had nothing for her and was spending every day at the hospital—telling her how much she was loved and begging her to keep fighting. Karen began to assemble a layette filled with many things including: tiny sleepers, onesies, receiving blankets, sheets, towels, handmade blankets, a stuffed animal and the smallest diapers she could find. Karen managed to find the tiniest outfits she had; ones that could fit a tiny baby doll. Then Karen received the call that she was waiting for---at 3 pounds, 10 ounces, Angel was going home! The social worker picked up Angel’s package; on the top was a pink preemie sleeper that said “I am loved” and a white soft blanket that said “God bless this child.” YOU MADE THIS POSSIBLE! CSA Minute “Joyful Missionary Disciples: A Steward’s Response,” a workshop on the spiritual and practical aspects of stewardship as a way of life for parish leaders and those seeking to be Christ’s disciples, will be held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary this Tuesday, March 6.

Auxiliary Bishop Donald Hanchon will serve as the keynote speaker, addressing “The Spirituality of Stewardship.” Two breakout series will cover topics such as the vital role of parish leadership in forming disciples; recruiting, training, and forming your Stewardship Commission; planning for successful ministry events; and motivating and engaging parishioners.

Thanks to gifts to the CSA, this workshop of the archdiocesan Department of Development and Stewardship is free and will be held twice on March 6, from 1-3:30 p.m. and 6:30-9 p.m. In addition, Our Sunday Visitor will offer two bonus sessions on establishing a Parish Priority Plan to transform parishes. These bonus sessions begin at 11:30am and 5:00pm and will include a boxed meal.

This conference is for Christian families who want to fight together for more freedom in Christ: Freedom to know who we are, what we were made for, and that we belong.

The conference features Matt and Jenn Lozano, from Heart of the Father Ministries (www.heartofthefather.com). It includes separate tracks for infants through young adults, led by dynamic speakers such as Deborah Herbeck and Pete Burak from Renewal Ministries. The day includes teaching, discussion, activities, prayer response time, and a Vigil Mass at the end of the day.

During the conference, all participants will receive teaching on the Five Keys of Unbound as a practical tool for fighting spiritual battles. This teaching will be presented in the larger context of today's fight for our families and the gracious plan of God the Father–that families would image his love to the whole world.

Although the conference is primarily geared to couples with children at home, we want to welcome families and family members of all ages, stages, and situations.

We have more space for adults than for young people in the facility, so we anticipate a sizable group of adult attendees coming without children. We will provide alternative discussion/activity options for participants attending alone or in alternative family groupings (e.g. extended family groups, parents of adult children, grandparents, single parents).

Marriages Arrangements must be made at least six months in advance and couple must be active, registered members at a Catholic Church. Potential wedding date is not confirmed until couple meets with a Divine Child priest. Officiant at the ceremony will be a priest from Divine Child unless the couple has someone close to them who is a Catholic priest. Music for the liturgy must be coordinated with our Director of Music Ministry, Mr. Matthew Simpson. Funerals Arrangements are made in conjunction with the funeral home. Eulogies must be given at the funeral home or at the funeral luncheon; no eulogies at the funeral Mass, please. Memorial Masses are scheduled Monday-Friday only. Baptisms Baptisms may be requested on either the second or fourth Sunday of the month, pending approval. Arrangements must be made in advance and parents must attend a baptism class prior to the baptism. The Church requires that at least one of the parents and one of the godparents/sponsors be practicing Catholics; that is, they attend Mass each weekend.
