    A Message from President Hill

    6

As your brand-newPresident of the ScienceTeachers Association of Texas, please allow meto introduce myself. Myname is Ross Ann Hill,

and I have had the honor to educate sev-enth and eighth graders at Idalou MiddleSchool for the past twenty-seven years.Idalou, a small West Texas town outsideof Lubbock, is where I was born andreared. This year has been an exceptionalyear to be an Idalou Wildcat with oursuccesses athletically and academically!

As the school year winds down, weeducators notice de nite changes on thehorizon. With the ongoing legislativesession, who knows what modi cationswill transpire before the dust se les

with new TEKS, the STAAR test, andend-of-course exams. More on that in amoment.

Thankfully, the Science TeachersAssociation of Texas is experiencingenormous growth as we are now morethan 8,000 members strong! Currently,

we are gearing up for the Conferencefor the Advancement of Science Teach-ing at the Dallas Convention Center onNovember 17-19. This years theme - The

Art of Science recognizes the student(and her teacher) as a whole; some mightinvoke left brain/right brain references. Iprefer to think that if we are well-round-ed and open to creative learning op-portunities, we will be er forward ouryoung people into the complex worldthey are inheriting. CAST is always anenlightening adventure, so I encourageyour a endance this fall.

In addition, the Award Nominationsite is accepting nominations for those in-spiring science teachers in your life whodeserve recognition: h p://www.statweb.org/awards . Please take time to recom-mend someone so we can honor our best!

As promised, another word aboutelected o cials and their processes in

Austin. We all know that the resolutionof the school nance issue is reduced totwo options: very bad and much worse. We will again be asked to do more withless, and most of us will do so. The bigloser is the children (and their futureemployers, and the Texas economy, andthese childrens children, and American

international competitiveness, and soci-etys safety, and higher educations ex-pectations, and.). STAT can no longerstand by with crossed ngers.

Myone shout-out is to Sandra West, STATsLegislative Commi ee Chair, who onnumerous occasions has driven to Austinto testify at hearings of the State Board ofEducation, the Senate, the House of

Representatives and any other captiveaudience on science education issues.Sandra, on behalf of all of us, thank youvery much for your sel ess service to ourprofession.

Hopefully, your brief summer will be relaxing, educational, and restoring because a new school year with itsmultiple challenges shall be looming.

Farewell from the Past President by Joel Palmer

31 ,600,000 seconds ago(give or take 100,000 orso) I sat down to write avery di erent le er. Thatle er was my rst le eras the new President ofSTAT. This le er is my

    farewell le er.

31,600,000 seconds ago, gas was anaverage of $2.90 per gallon 1 , and we werecomplaining about the price. Today the av-erage is $3.96 and we think fondly of pricesa year a go. 31.6 x 106 seconds ago (or 1 yearfor those of you who have not gured it outyet) there was a teacher surplus. Districtsaround the state were having record num- bers of people showing up at job fairs. Somedistricts had as many individuals show upat their job fair as they had teachers in theirdistricts.

Nevertheless, there were openings. My district hired about 20% fewer teach-ers than in prior years, but we had someopenings. This year my district and all thedistricts near mine simply canceled their jobfairs and most have hiring freezes. While Ihave not heard of any science teachers being laid o yet I know of several ScienceCurriculum Coordinators and InstructionalSpecialists that are looking for jobs. I have

openings in my district for science teachers but am not allowed to ll them. Budgets arenot yet adopted at the district level becausea budget has not been adopted by the State

Legislature. Until the Legislature votes onthe budget there is a great deal of uncertain-ty.

In addition to the budget decisionsthat the Legislature has yet to make, they arelooking at a number of bills that will impactlegislation. STAT is tracking these bills andmaking them available to you as a member. You can see the bills that relate to educationon the STAT website under News/Legisla-tive Tracker . There are links to each bill onTexas Legislature Online where you can ndthe entire bill and see the status of the bill. These bills address educational funding, unfunded mandates, professional employee

salaries, deadlines for noti cation of teacherof nonrenewal of contracts, implementationof the STAAR, teacher appraisal and more.STAT is actively tracking these bills andengaging in conservations with the legisla-tors. It is easy to think that your voice is notimportant. Nothing could be further fromthe truth. Last December, four STAT mem- bers went before the state school board toadvocate for the 9-12 supplemental sciencetextbook adoption. By the end of the meet-ing, not only had the board reversed it deci-sion on the 9-12 adoption, it had reinstatedthe 5-8 supplemental adoption.

Teachers make up a large demographicin Texas. If we remain silent the Legislaturewill not know what we want. One role ofSTAT is to be a voice for science teachers, but your voices are needed as well.

Farewell from the Past President (contd.)

It has been an interesting year as STATPresident. New TEKS, transition to new as-sessment, budget crises, and an outstanding,record-breaking CAST. I cannot take anycredit for the 2010 CAST in Houston. Thecredit goes to Past President Patsy Mageeand her commi ee. My job now is to makethe 2011 CAST in Dallas just as good. STATis commi ed to providing the premier pro-fessional development for science teachers. As I hand o the presidency of STAT to RossAnn Hill, I know that the organization is ingood hands.

In addition to the success of CAST2010, STAT has a number of other successesthis year. We impacted the State Board ofEducation decision on the supplementaladoption. STAT began o ering professionalliability insurance to its members. In addi-tion to CAST, STAT sponsored a number ofsuccessful MiniCASTs around the state. The biggest accomplishment for STAT this yearis a reorganization of the STAT Board. Prior

to this year the STAT Board consisted of thePresident, Vice President, President Elect,Past President, Secretary and Treasurer. Thisyear you, the STAT membership, voted toadd three additional positions. These posi-tions are the Member At Large positions, and the individuals may run for two consec-utive terms. In addition, the Vice President

and Secretary may also run for two con-secutive terms. These changes will provide broader representation on the board and

more continuity with all positions, allowingmembers to serve for more than one year.

Ross Ann will lead a very di erentSTAT board than the one I had, and I believethat it will be a stronger board that cancontinue improving STATs bene ts to itsmembership. Working together, we canprovide be er educational opportunities forall students in Texas.

    Simple labs to use in order to introduce students to the concepts of scienti c processesTEKS 1A; 2A, B, C, D, E; 3A, B, C, E

Scienti c processes are skills science students should be introduced to early and usedoften throughout their 6-12 science classes. The Candy labs are the result of trial, error, experience, and a profound interest of mine in the nature of science. The use of plain andpeanut chocolate in a colorful candy shell is not new to some science teachers, but I havedeveloped these labs to focus on speci c scienti c processes.

In order to introduce my students to the scienti c processes and the nature of science,I use the following activities. These activities establish the beginnings of lab procedures forour class and have worked well with 6th through 9th graders. As with all procedures, wemay need to reteach at times. I explain to my students that we may be using candy, but weare learning scienti c processes that we will use as scientists. In addition to the scienti cprocess terms, I introduce the terms metacognition and constructing knowledge. I sharewith them that it is important that they are aware of how they learn and knowing thismakes them responsible and active in their own learning (metacognition). They learn thatin order to construct their own knowledge, they need to be able to link what they know andwhat they are familiar with to what is unfamiliar (constructing knowledge).

The use of plain and peanut chocolate candies as the focus of the endeavor providesthem with something familiar, non-threatening, and fun. The lab activity introduces themto making observations, measuring, classifying, organizing data, inferring, de ning opera-tionally, predicting, hypothesizing, making models, and exploring variables. Conducting

this activity at the beginning of the school year introduces the students to the vocabularyand concepts of the scienti c process and provides a reference point for future and morerigorous lab activities. This activity is conducted at our desks and not in the lab.

Each lab has a vocabulary that should be taught to the students in context to the lab.Allow time for students to re ect on each experience and make connections between theirexperiences and the value of each scienti c process to their future experiences in your class.

The value of district benchmark tests and statewide assessments is: we can assessstudents knowledge on speci c state and national standards; we can predict studentperformance on those assessments; and we can identify gaps in the cycle of Curriculum,Instruction, Learning, and Assessment.

In this case study, we discovered the students inability to transfer their learning fromthe lessons in class to the districts benchmark test. If this trend continued, we foresaw adisappointing performance on the States assessment. We will extrapolate the success of thiscase study to instructional strategies to improve science performance.

On the Brink of Success3-D Learning to 2-D Performance3-D to 2-DBy Barbara ten Brink, Ph.D.

How can we ensure that our students will transfer theirknowledge from the instructional practices we implementin the science classroom to the state assessment? What is 3-D? What is 2-D? I know I taught it. I know my students learned it. Howcan my students transfer their knowledge to a test?

What to Do When They Drive You Crazyby David Peters

I am sure weve all had thatstudent, that one , the only one that drivesyou nuts! You know the class is coming, and you stand in the hallway and see themwalking towards the classroom and youcringe. You think, How am I going to makeit through another class with that student? Then the bell rings, the class begins, and asyou begin to take roll... it starts. You hearthe voice and you see the movement andyou know its going to be a tough class. Itsthe student that isnt quite bad enough tosend out of class or even write a disciplinereferral on, but, bad enough to cause someclass disruption and drive you crazy tryingto control the class.

I had one of these, well call her Lucy.Lucy was 16 years old and in my Pre-Ad-vanced Placement (PAP) Physics class. Shewas super intelligent, but she was a chal-lenge to my patience and teaching. She hadthe qualities of a Gifted and Talented (GT)

student, but had not been identi ed in theschooling system. She obviously knew shewas gifted as she was in a PAP class, but, just had just never been labeled. She had theknack for saying the perfect thing at the per-fect time to completely disrupt the class ormy train of thought. When she took a test, she would actually come to me and ask me

for the answers!I tried several di erent approaches in my

treatment of this student. I tried ignoring:

when she acted out in class I would act likeI didnt see or hear her, but that didnt workwell at all. I tried praising and encourage-ment: when she made a high score on a testor project I would let the whole class know. This worked sometimes but at others wasdisastrous. In the end, she was just a dif-

cult student to gure out. We nally justcame to a mutual understanding that shewas going to act as she wanted and I was go-ing to just have to accept it.

She wasnt bad all the time. Shealways made very high grades on tests and, when she did daily work, her work wasexcellent. Just ge ing her to concentrate anddo the work was the problem.

Ive had several students like this onein my years of teaching, but she de nitelystood out as one of my most di cult. Iguess the most di cult part was she was sointelligent and so hard to work with. Mostof my di cult students were usually not

very highly motivated or were of averageintelligence, but Lucy was de nitely abovethe norm. I believe this is why I found herto be so di cult: I saw such tremendouspotential.

Fortunately I was able to keep with upLucy over the years. After she left my class,

we became friends and she also becamefriends with my daughter, who was roughlyher same age. This friendship has lastedfor several years, so I know how her life has

When They Drive You Crazy (contd.)

proceeded. I found out in the course of timethat one of the reasons she was so di cultin my class is that at the time she was go-ing through a lot at home. Her parentshad just split up and in her grief she wasexperimenting with drugs and drinking andacting out. Over the next few years she quit

the drugs and drinking and accepted herparents break-up. She went on to receivea full athletic scholarship at a Midwesternuniversity and studied pre-med. At thistime she is a medical student at a majoruniversity and will soon be a pediatrician. So, in the end, this most di cult student became highly successful.

Is every di cult student going to be ashighly successful as this one? Unfortu-nately, probably not, but you never knowwhich one will be. So, it is always best to bepatient and work with the di cult studentsas best you can, because you never know, the next di cult student could end up be-ing a doctor, lawyer, or even President ofthe United States and all they needed wasa li le patience and understanding in theirearly years.

So, when you hear that student com-ing down the hall and you cringe, remem- ber: that student may be having problemsyou are not aware or at the very least, the

acting out could be a mask covering tremen-dous potential. Of course, they could just be a bad student that needs more discipline,

but most likely, there are some deep-seatedreasons behind the behavior.

So, if you are a new teacher, or evena veteran, when you have a student thatdrives you crazy in your class what do youdo? You approach them with patience and

understanding as much as you can. Youcan try and nd out what underlying is-sues could be causing the behavior througha counselor, parent or even the student. Ifyou nd an underlying cause then youknow how to react to the student and hope-fully, how to reach the student and regaincontrol of the class. If you are unable to nda cause or if the student is just challenging beyond our e orts, then, you can alwaystry the traditional methods of write-upsand consequences, but in most cases this isnot e ective and only a stopgap measure. Ihave always found that using patience andunderstanding is much more e ective thanconsequences (although its sometimes anice break when they are out of class indetention or in-school-suspension (ISS)!).
