State of the Workforce2020 | 4th Quarter
Regional Overview
This report delivers quarterly labor market information to NOVA faculty, staff, students, employers, and community partners to highlight regional employment trends. To ensure that northern Virginia businesses remain globally competitive and continue to create jobs, NOVA provides access to highly skilled, credentialed, and diverse talent
and defined career pathways for the region. NOVA’s Office of Strategic Partnerships and Workforce Innovation collaborates with employers, economic development organizations, education institutions, community-based organizations, and local governments in the northern Virginia region to address the skills gap and develop a robust talent pipeline.
The fourth quarter of 2020 saw continued impacts from COVID-19 nationwide and in northern Virginia. Job postings declined 5.5% between Q3 and Q4 of 2020, and were down more than 30% since the same time period in 2019. All of the local jurisdictions experienced a decline in Q4 job postings, with Arlington, Prince William and Manassas,
and Loudoun experiencing the largest number of job posting declines. However, job postings in cybersecurity and health care increased in Q4, and made up nearly 20% of total job postings for the region. The region remains the number one location for employers advertising positions in cybersecurity nationwide, with approximately 7.8% of all Q4 cybersecurity job postings nationwide coming from northern Virginia. We are continuing to provide monthly updates on the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on our labor market, which are included in a separate monthly COVID-19 infographic.
