This issue of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences newsletter marks a transition from my role as the Interim Chair to the leadership of Dr. Stephen Deutsch as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, effective July 1, 2009. It has been a wonderful privilege to serve as the Interim Chair of the Department for the past two-and-a-half years. I am very thankful to the faculty and the support staff for their willingness to work enthusiastically with me during this interim period to fulfill our teaching, research, and clinical missions. Because of the efforts of our faculty and staff, we are able to welcome Dr. Deutsch into a department with a history of remarkable achievement and productivity. Our teaching missions continue to be diverse, including nationally accredited programs for the training of Psychiatric Residents, Psychology Interns, and Psy.D. Graduate Students, a Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program in Child Psychology, a rich undergraduate curriculum and clerkship training program for EVMS medical students, and an on-going involvement and close collaboration with training programs in the Health Professions, the Department of Family and Community Medicine, the Department of Pediatrics, the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Department of Internal Medicine. Our recent successes in securing state and federal training grants have fundamentally contributed to the expansion of our Internship Training Program to include important experiences in behavioral medicine and pediatric treatment and consultation. Our faculty’s productivity in securing research funding from both governmental and private foundation sources has been instrumental in greatly expanding the research base of the Department. Our clinical services continue to grow and fulfill an important community need, as well as to provide a critical teaching base for our students. The successful integration of teaching, clinical, and research missions is well illustrated by several of our Department’s programs including the Cognitive Therapy Center, and the Neuropsychology Center and Behavioral Medicine Center, the latter two programs moving to new office space in May, 2009 located on the second floor of Fairfax Hall. As noted later in this newsletter, the joint operation of these two programs within a single suite will facilitate the sharing of research, educational, and clinical activities between these programs. We welcome Dr. Stephen Deutsch to a vibrant and productive Department and look forward to continued growth and expansion under his leadership. Robert P. After an extensive national search, Stephen Deutsch, M.D., Ph.D., has been selected as the next Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, effective July 1, 2009. Dr. Deutsch received his M.D., and Ph.D. in Biochemical Pharmacology, from New York University. Dr. Deutsch is a nationally renowned psychiatrist who comes to us from a position as Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University and at the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine. He is also leaving the position of Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Deutsch recently completed a deployment with the Navy Expeditionary Medical Unit at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

Dr. Deutsch has an outstanding research background with over 200 articles in peer

review journals, and a national and international reputation for his work in schizophrenia and affective disorders. He has been an invited lecturer in numerous presentations across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. He received a 2008 award for excellence in teaching by the Department of Psychiatry of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine, and in 2000 he received the Distinguished Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders. Dr. Deutsch’s experience in medical schools, the U.S. Navy, and the VA medical system provides him with a unique background to work with our community partners and to provide effective and creative leadership for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at EVMS. We look forward to Dr. Deutsch’s leadership, vision, and expertise. More information can be found concerning Dr. Stephen Deutsch at the following EVMS website: www.evms.edu/about/news/2009-02-20-psych-chair.html

In addition to welcoming Dr. Deutsch to our Department, I would also like to take

this opportunity to thank Dean Pepe, Dr. Frank Counselman, Chair of the Search Committee, as well as each of the Search Committee members for their extraordinary efforts in the process that lead to Dr. Deutsch’s selection. The Committee did an outstanding job of identifying five highly qualified candidates for the position, and the Dean’s staff and Ms. Missy Swoope were highly effective in the challenging logistics involved in bringing each of the candidates to campus, arranging for their grand rounds presentations, and systematically collecting feedback regarding interviewer’s reactions to each of the candidates. Overall, the search process was conducted in an exemplary manner. The effectiveness of the search process is reflected in the successful recruitment of Dr. Stephen Deutsch, a Psychiatrist with national visibility and an excellent balance of administrative, research, clinical, and teaching experience. Our faculty and support staff deeply appreciate the efforts of Dean Pepe and the search committee in bringing the recruitment process to a highly successful conclusion.

Robert P. Archer, Ph.D., Interim Chair Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

NEUROPSYCHOLOGY AND BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE

TO SHARE NEW OFFICE SPACE

Beginning in May 2009, The Neuropsychology Center, co-directed by Drs. J.D. Ball and Michael L. Stutts, and The Behavioral Medicine Center, directed by Dr. Serina A. Neumann, will share a new suite constructed for them on the 2nd floor of Fairfax Hall. The joint operation of these two programs within a single suite may facilitate joint research and clinical activities. This move also serves several other Department and EVMS objectives.

These two programs, their clinical services, research activities, and student training

activities fit nicely together, and all staff involved in these relocations are excited about the opportunities that may be created by their convergence into a single office suite. There is already an example of their collaborative enterprises. Among Dr. Neumann’s several research initiatives, is the Pro Heart and Brain Study for which she has sought consultative assistance from The Neuropsychology Staff. Dr. Neumann is the Principal Investigator for this project investigating the potential differential impact on patients’ subsequent neuropsychological functioning of undergoing one of two different cardiac procedures: (a) coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) vs. (b) multi vessel angioplasty. Drs. Stutts and Ball are assisting Dr. Neumann in the procurement of pre-post neurocognitive functioning for subjects enrolled in this study.

In the new suite, Dr. Neumann’s Behavioral Medicine Center will house Dr.

Neumann’s Psychophysiologic Evaluation and Treatment Laboratory (PETL). Here, Dr. Neumann will provide biofeedback therapy as well as collect psychophysiologic measures for her various research projects. In addition to her own office and the shared common spaces with The Neuropsychology Center, The Behavioral Medicine Center will have two offices to serve as research assistant offices and interview/testing rooms and one room to serve as an observation deck/learning center. Her current research team includes Ms. Ashley Womack, Ms. Claire Kelley, and Ms. Gina Bondi. This center also serves as a psychophysiologic research training center for clinical psychology graduate students and interns, psychiatry residents, medical students, and undergraduate students.

The Neuropsychology Center will continue to house Drs. Ball and Stutts and their

Neuropsychology Psychometrician, Ms. Brenda Lambert-Gardner and Administrative Assistant, Lakeisha Joyner. In addition, they will have two small neuropsychology testing labs that will double as student office space for clinical psychology practica students from within the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology and clinical psychology interns from within the EVMS Clinical Psychology Internship. The Neuropsychology Center routinely shares patients and activities with other EVMS faculty from Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine, and there should be room for continued collaborative enterprises with these and other community agencies, as before.
