Ursula E. Collins was born out of the old Steed Street School that was founded in the late forties to provide a quality education for children of color. The school was assisted by local houses of worship in the area to all religious affiliations. In 1950, it was renamed Ursula E. Collins when the Richmond County Board of Education took control of the school.

Ursula E. Collins K – 8 School is a concentrated and condensed community school that is the focal point and pride of the people who comprise the historic 15th Street corridor in urban Augusta. It is one of the many urban schools named for an outstanding African American educator, who helped change the paradigm of education in Richmond County to ensure equity and equality for all children in the Richmond County School System. Approximately fifty percent of our students presently reside in the Cherry Tree Crossing housing community that has been slated for demolition in the coming school year; however, these residents are seeking housing within the Collins K-8 school zone because of the historical connection they have with the school. The parents of Cherry Tree Crossing realize that their children receive a rich and quality education at Collins K – 8 School while maintaining their identity and heritage. In the past ten years, Ursula E. Collins has been recognized as a Title I Distinguished School four times. Ursula E. Collins K – 8 School has been a solid cornerstone and pillar of the 15th Street corridor for over fifty years. The school still provides a cultural educational experience that young African American students identity as part of their rich heritage. This educational experience cannot be achieved anywhere else in the Richmond County School System.

Our Goals for 2013-2014


By the end of the 2013-14 school year, Collins K-8 will improve students’

Mathematics, Science, ELA, Reading, and Social Studies CRCT scores by 30% of the median score for students that “Did Not

Meet”, 40% of the median score for students that "Meet” and 20% of the

median score for students that “Exceed”.

By implementing rigorous, research-based, standards-driven instruction with an emphasis

on cooperative learning to develop student self-confidence, and to improve student

achievement, provide students with instructions problem-solving strategies for all subject areas. All teaching strategies will be

designed to achieve our goals and to improving all students mental process, awareness, perception, reasoning, and

judgment.
