Lake Norman Charter Demographics

• Public school serving students in grades 5 - 11.

• LNCS receives funding from the state of North Carolina and supporting counties for instruction of its students.

• The school opened for the 1998-99 school year

• LNCS currently has 1,300 students enrolled in grades 5 through 11.

Today’s School Libraries

•Ever-changing institutions that must meet the needs of a rapidly changing population.

•Provide vital services to meet the needs of students and prepare them to be contributing and informed citizens in the global society.

•Create lifelong readers, but must also help students learn to navigate the information age.

Challenges of School LibraryBudget Issues School libraries must try to

provide the same number and quality of services with less money. Many times, to save money, school systems view librarians as nonessential

Working with Teachers School libraries face issue of trying to work with teachers to help build the curriculum and provide materials to support the curriculum. Many teachers do not understand what skills and services the library can provide .

Censorship Self-censorship and censorship from parents threaten the work that school libraries do.

Library a Set of Services

•Library is a set of services that a librarian can provide to the patron regardless of whether there is a physical place to provide the services in.

•In the future many more libraries will serve their customers through the web.

•Today’s society wants flexibility and the comfort of doing things from their home via the internet.

Management Actions

•Managers of libraries must embrace these changes.

•A library manager in this new information

and technology age must continually review the policies and function of their library to ensure they are meeting the needs of their users.

•The librarian will focus on the content, quality, execution, delivery, and process of the services instead of focusing on the environment they are providing.

•Obtain the students and teachers involvement in the creation process.

•Hold a meeting at the beginning of year to help patrons understand the library

Values:•My leadership philosophy is focused on

showing respect to everyone I come into contact with.

•I want to exhibit honesty, ethical behavior, and practice continuous collaboration.

Priorities:•As a School Media Center Specialist my

main priorities will be to support the curriculum, create lifelong readers, and to help students become contributing members of society.

•Respect for everyone I encounter. •The best way to gain respect from others is to be a respectful person. •Showing respect will also make it easier to solicit people’s help and cooperation. • A leader must also respect the work they are doing.

•It is extremely important to be honest and ethical. •It is also important for people to trust the leader •One way to gain trust is through honesty and acting ethically. •Integrity is a leadership value that many look for in a manager.

•Enlisting the help/opinion of others is essential if a leader wants people to accept the decisions feel like they are valued. •According to Ann Prentice, “Anyone who will have to live with the results of the idea should be part of the planning and development.”

Creating Lifelong Readers

Creating Contributing Members of Society

•Support the curriculum by purchasing materials. •Teach lessons on technology and other topics to both students and staff. •Work with teachers to develop the school’s curriculum. •Help students learn to effectively use technology is of vital importance to school librarians.

•Encourage students to read and create lifelong readers among their students. •Provide materials for students’ leisure time, as well as academic materials, because students will enjoy reading more if they can read materials that

interest them.

•Help mold students into contributing and informed citizens. •Help students learn to navigate through society by teaching students valuable skills like, research, critiquing websites, properly using technology, and even how to engage in their civic duties.
