Dear Fellow Bar Members,

On behalf of the Board of Governors and Executive Committee, I would like

to invite you to attend the 2012 Annual Meeting of the State Bar of Georgia to

be held May 31-June 2, at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa.

As much as we have enjoyed Bar meetings at beach resorts out of state, it

was my choice this year to keep all of the Bar meetings in Georgia. I hope

you and your family will take this opportunity for well-deserved time away

from the office while we reflect on the achievements of this year and the

challenges and opportunities ahead.

If you have not spent time in Savannah in recent years, you are in for a

great treat. Boosted by the notoriety of “Midnight in the Garden of Good

and Evil,” a lively arts community centered in the Savannah College of Art

& Design and an increasing role in global trade, Savannah has become a vibrant tourist destination. For your

“down time” pleasure, Savannah offers many choices, including golf, tennis, arts, shopping, a magnificent

selection of restaurants, tours ranging from the seriously historic to the “Midnight in the Garden” and ghost

tours, nearby beaches and nature centers, and much more. Or, you might prefer to simply take it easy in the

resort spa or by the hotel pool watching giant container ships sail to and from distant ports of call.

We have attempted to provide a mix of practical CLE offerings listed on a matrix so that you can select the

specific topics of most value to you, all for a single registration fee. If you meet the early-bird deadline, you

can get as many CLE hours as you like for $100 across the meeting. The professionalism hours will be self-

reporting and will require an additional fee.

In addition to CLE offerings, there are always outstanding opportunities for professional networking through

section events, business meetings, alumni gatherings and other social functions. Thursday night, enjoy the

family-oriented poolside opening night bash overlooking the Savannah River. Friday night, help the Young

Lawyers Division celebrate its 65th anniversary and honor Chief Justice George Carley, who will retire in

July. Saturday night, network with lawyers and judges at the Presidential Inaugural Dinner, when Robin

Frazer Clark will be sworn in as the 2012-13 Bar president.

You never know where attendance at a State Bar Annual Meeting may lead you and your career. It was

19 years ago that my bride and I decided to take a deductible vacation at a State Bar meeting in Savannah.

Having never been involved in Bar activities, I randomly chose a section breakfast to attend while my wife

slept in, was drafted into service as a section officer and eventually wound up as State Bar president.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as your State Bar president for 2011-12 and for all you do

throughout the year to pursue your calling, promote the cause of justice and protect the integrity of the legal

profession in the great state of Georgia.

See you in Savannah!

Kenneth L. Shigley
