Introduction

State Bank of India is a foreign commercial bank that established its operations in

Bangladesh some years ago. But within a short period it has improved its position and

now is still improving. It is a modern bank and provides all types of banking services that

a bank can provide. Though there are some problems, it is a highly potential bank.

However, Internship is a part and parcel to complete BBA program. It is essential to get

experienced with real organizational situation and make a combination of theory and

Page 9: State Bank of India

There are some limitations of this report which are given below:

All the activities, ideas and perception based on Sylhet Branch; there is a little

deviation in developing the overall opinion regarding the performance of

whole State Bank India.

Many important information of SBI have been limited here because it could

not be collected for maintaining secrecy of the respective branches.

Limitation of time was a major constraint in making a complete study, due to

time limitation. The duration was only twelve weeks. It was too limited to

cover all the banking area. Many aspects could not be discussed in the present

study.

In many cases, up to date information is not published

Getting Relevant papers and documents were strictly prohibited by bank.

1.2. The State Bank of India in Bangladesh

Before the independence the Dhaka, which set up the city in July 1846, was taken over

the bank of Bengal when it opened its branch in Dhaka in 1862. Subsequently the bank of

banal was merged to imperial bank of India had fairly wide spread branch network in the

then east Bengal at Dhaka, Chittagong, Narayanganj, Mymensing, Rangpur, Sirajganj

and Chandpur.

The imperial bank of India becoming the state bank of India in 1955, provided services in

Bangladesh in its branch at Dhaka, chittagong and narayangonj continued till 1965, after

a brief interruption of ten years the bank was back in Dhaka in 1975 to continue long

tradition of service to this part of the world.

The Sate Bank of India was thus born with the new sense of social purpose aided by the

480 offices and three local head offices inherited from the imperial bank. The concept of

banking as mere repositions of community’s saving and lenders to creditworthy parties

was soon to give way to the concept of purposeful banking sub serving the growing and

diversified financial needs of planned economic development. The state bank of India

was destined to act as the pacesetter in this respect and lead the Indian banking system

into the exciting field of national development.

The bank is opened its 2nd branch (49th foreign branch) on 20th august 2003 at Agrabad,

Chittagong in Bangladesh to extend state of the art computerization banking services to

the people of the port city and commercial capital of Bangladesh

4.1. Findings

During my internship period, I observed that Indian Visa Application center newly

introduced in State Bank of India though it is not related with Banking part, but as it

is a service Bank getting benefit from it. For example, Bank selling

Dollars/Endorsement and taking visa fee. But there are certain factors that the bank

management should look at. Customers should get more benefit, like most number

customer are unable to fill up the application from, some customer not able to come in

the bank, reducing the visa fee, easy process to get medical visa, increase the visa

processing time, taking long time to deliver passport etc. I want to highlights some

special findings below:

Some employees are not efficient because of lacking in proper training and

experience in perspective field.

It is in located in a major area of Sylhet.

Scope of market penetration through diversified product.

There is attractive market in Sylhet.

Lengthy communication between management of head branch.

Available products are not in sufficient to face immense competition.

High concentration on fixed deposit

23

Page 24: State Bank of India

4.2. Recommendations

As a visa processing system is one kind of service so to increase the efficiency in

customer service the State Bank of India should try to improve and develop the process

of providing services. To get a perfect process of delivering services, the customers

should be encouraged to participate by providing their valuable advices.

As most of customers are not able to fill up the application from management should

take necessary step such as there should be an advisor to help them.

As rules of the visa processing that all member must come in the bank for submit there

visa form but in case of like patient he or she not able to come in the bank that time

management should helpful to them.

Visa processing fee should reduce.

It is shown that in case of medical visa there is very complex process to get visa. In

case of medical visa management should apply easy process and gibe surety to get visa.

Visa processing time is not enough so management should increase time for applicant.

It is taken seven days to return passport it is the long time so management should take

step to reduce the time.

24

Page 25: State Bank of India

5.1. Conclusion

State Bank of India has from the very beginning experienced growth in their operations.

They started really small but have grown into a renowned and successful private bank

within the last five years. From the last five years it included Indian visa processing

service. It very helpful for peoples of Sylhet, cause before establishing this service

system peoples are had to Dhaka or Chittagong for getting Indian visa. But now it is very

easy to get visa from own city. It is providing service for five months. Because so many

peoples are needs to go our neighbor country for visit, business, studies, medical service

etc.

If the State Bank of India improve there banking service as well as visa processing

service that can help State Bank of India to gain more customer satisfaction and it will be

easier for them to retain their present customer base and also acquire new customers to
