Soil Erosion in India : An estimated 6000 million tonnes of fertile top soil are eroded annually. It is uselessly washed into the sea or decreases the life spans of dams by silting up their reservoirs.The 'area of flood-prone land has doubled from 20 million to 49 million hectares within a decade. Annual loss due to floods is in the neighbourhood of Rs. 1,000 crore.The expanding Thar desert has already encroached on 4% of the area of Western Rajasthan and made another 76% vulnerable. A total of 175 million hectares agricultural and non - agricultural land has been affected. 12% of our population lives in drought prone areas covering 19% of our land surface. Pastoral nomads and tribals are among the worst affected.

Fresh Water & Air in India : 4With 70% of the available drinking water being polluted, two-thirds of all diseases in India are water-borne. As a result,

we loose 73 million work days annually together with production worth Rs. 600 crore.4Industrial wastes, drained into waterways, have created the nightmare of paralysis and other crippling diseases caused

by slow pollution due to mercury and other metals which creep up the food chain into fish as well as cow's milk.4Wetlands, which act as a buffer for floods, purifiers of waste-water and nurseries for fish and wildlife are bring drained

with no regard to their economic and ecological values.4Our native river fish such as Mahseer and Hilsa are threatened by pollution and construction of large dams.4We harvest today only 10% of our annual rainfall and will use only 25% in another 40 years, At the same time we are

threatening our groundwater resources through overuse and neglecting the ancient and proven method of tanks.4Thermal power stations, petrochemical complexes, fertiliser factories, vehicular traffic and smoky wood stoves are

polluting air at levels far above what are considered safe by the World Health Organisation (WHO). 4Acid Rain, which killed all life in many fresh water lakes in the West, has made its appearance over the industrialised

areas such as of Delhi, Bombay and Pune.
