    StartmeupHK Venture Programme

    This inaugural StartmeupHK Venture Forum is the highlight of the StartmeupHK Venture Programme organised by InvestHK.The Programme aims to support the global expansion of high impact ventures and propel the development of Hong Kong asan innovation and entrepreneurship hub in Asia. InvestHK supports the growth of these ventures by facilitating their access tofinancial, intellectual and social capital.

    The StartmeupHK Venture Programme was launched in July 2013. InvestHK received altogether 384 entries from 39 countriesand cities. A panel of assessors was formed to select 12 finalists, with preference given to ventures that:

    Run an innovative, scalable and sustainable business Are early to growth stage ventures Aim to develop business globally with either a presence in Hong Kong or the interest in establishing or expanding an office in

    Hong Kong over the next few years Demonstrate positive economic, social and/or environmental impact and benefits/potential benefits to Hong Kong

    The 12 StartmeupHK Venture Programme finalists from six countries and cities are in Hong Kong this week to:

    Timothy Draper Founder and a Managing Director, Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ)

    Tim Drapers original suggestion to use viral marketing in web-based email to geometrically spread an

    internet product to its market was instrumental to the successes of Hotmail and YahooMail, and has beenadopted as a standard marketing technique by hundreds of businesses. On behalf of DFJ, Tim currently

    serves on the boards of DoAt, Glam, Prosper and Miartech. DFJs previous successes include: Skype (EBAY),

    Overture.com (YHOO), Baidu (BIDU), Parametric Technology (PMTC), Hotmail (MSFT), PLX Technologies (PLXT),

    Preview Travel (TVLY), Digidesign (AVID),and many others. He recently founded the Draper University of

    Heroes, an immersive boarding school in San Mateo, California for students 18-24 years old, dedicated

    to encouraging proactive entrepreneurship. Tim is the course creator and Chairman of BizWorld, a 501c3

    organisation built around simulated teaching of entrepreneurship and business to children. He also serves

    on the Harvard Business School Board of Deans Advisors and has a BS in Electrical Engineering from

    Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

    Jonathan Medved Founder and CEO, OurCrowd

    Jonathan Medved is a serial entrepreneur and according to the Washington Post (2007) one of Israels

    leading high tech venture capitalists. In the 2008 New York Times supplement Israel at 60 he was

    named one of the top 10 most influential Americans who have impacted Israel. Jon is the founder and

    CEO of OurCrowd, a new Israeli crowdfunding platform for accredited investors which according to Forbes

    (August 2013) is one of the largest crowdfunding organizations on the planet. OurCrowd has raised over

    US$20 million for 26 portfolio companies since its launch in February 2013. Between 2006-2012, he was

    the co-founder and CEO of Vringo (Nasdaq:VRNG) bringing it public in 2010. Between 1995-2006 he was

    the co-founder and General Partner of Israel Seed Partners, one of Israels leading venture capital funds

    with US$262 million under management. He was also a co-founder and Executive Vice President at Meret

    Optical Communications, Inc., a fibre optics pioneer acquired by the Amoco Corporation in 1990, and Accent

    Software, which went public on Nasdaq. Jon serves on the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency and on

    the Board of Governors of the Jerusalem College of Technology.

    Douglas Richard Founder, School for Startups

    Doug Richard is a successful entrepreneur with three decades of business experience building, selling and

    investing in businesses of all shapes and sizes. He believes that entrepreneurs are made and not born and

    thrives on helping people make the leap and set up their own business. As a serial entrepreneur, effective

    public speaker, and armed with a degree in psychology from the University of California, Doug is uniquely

    prepared to create and deliver effective training in how to start and run a profitable business. Through

    his School for Startups Doug has delivered instruction to more than 10,000 business owners with help

    from universities, public institutions like the British Library and philanthropic organisations like the Royal

    Institute of Great Britain. In 2006, Doug received an honorary Queens Award for Enterprise Promotion for

    his work promoting, developing and helping entrepreneurs. In 2010, he received the Enterprise Educator of

    the year award from the National Council on Graduate Employment for his work through School for Startups

    with UK Universities.

    Max Burger Executive Chairman, Golien Ltd

    A graduate in economics from the University of St Gallen in Switzerland, Max Burger also holds an MBA from

    the Harvard Business School. He began his career at Dresdner Bank in Singapore and later joined The BostonConsulting Group (BCG) in Munich. After leaving BCG, he joined a family-owned tobacco company. In 1986, he

    co-founded CFP Corporate Finance Partners with Michael Hinderer in Zurich. He launched the Madrid

    office of CFP in 1988 and co-founded the Munich office in 1989. CFP became a member of the Apax Partners

    Group in 1989. As of mid-2005 he was heading Apaxs expansion into Asia and relocated to Hong Kong. From

    July 2002 to June 2003, Max Burger was Chairman of the EVCA (European Venture Capital Association). In

    October 2009 he retired from his active position as an equity partner at Apax and became CEO of Golien Ltd

    in Hong Kong.

    Michel Crochon Executive Vice President, Global Strategy, Schneider Electric

    Michel Crochon started his career within Merlin Gerin in 1975. He held various positions in the Uninterrupted

    Power Supply (UPS) Division in France and then worldwide, followed by operational management roles in

    manufacturing and marketing. In 1991, he joined the management team for France as Strategy & IT Director,

    and consolidated his international experience in China, from 1996 to 1999, as Strategy & MarketingVice-President. In 2000, he was relocated in France and appointed Senior Vice-President in charge of the

    Industry Market within the Strategy Division. In 2004, as Executive Vice-President, he was named head of the

    Customer & Market Division, before taking responsibility for the Automation Business Unit in 2006 and then

    of the Industry Business. In June 2010, Michel was appointed Executive Vice-President of the Energy Business

    and in 2012, he served as Executive Vice-President in charge of the Infrastructure Business. Since 1 January

    2013, he has been leading Schneiders global strategy. He has been a member of Schneiders Executive

    Committee since 2004.

    Marvin Lai Co-Chairman, Venture Committee, HKVCA; Founder Member, HKBAN

    Marvin Lai is Managing Principal of Burgeon Group Consulting Ltd., Senior Advisor to LionRock Capital Ltd.

    (HK) and ES Capital Group, and Co-Chairman of the Venture Committee of the Hong Kong Venture Capital

    and Private Equity Association. He has over 25 years experience in venture capital and private equity,

    telecommunications, IT, and consumption. He is responsible for Burgeon Groups principal investment and

    management consulting businesses and advises LionRock on its origination and capital raising initiatives

    and ES Capital Group on its strategic investments. Marvin holds an eMBA from INSEAD and Beijing Tsinghua

    University, an MSc in Financial Management from the University of London, an MA (Management Research)

    from Macquarie University (MGSM), an MSc in Electrical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University and a

    BSc in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University.

    Andy Liu Head of Asia Pacific, China and Japan Strategy and Business Development, IMS Health

    Andy Liu is responsible for leading all investments, acquisitions, joint ventures, deal transactions and

    partnerships in the region. He leads IMS Healths investment strategy in over 16 countries in Asia Pacific

    and previously led the companys commercial operations as President for Asia, excluding Japan. He has

    extensive pharmaceutical and biotech industry experience working across various multinational companies.

    Previous to IMS, he served as Vice President of Strategy and Operations for a TPG private equity biotechportfolio company. He also spent many years with Merck and UCB holding several executive management and

    leadership positions. At IMS, Andy has held several operational roles from Business Unit Head to Division

    Marketing Head to General Manager and Regional VP. During his tenure he has successfully managed and

    launched products across key therapeutic franchises such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, anticonvulsants,

    arthritis, antihistamine, osteoporosis and diabetes. He has commercialisation experience across the US,

    Latin America and Asia-Pacific markets, and has served on several boards including The American Chamber

    of Commerce, The European Chamber of Commerce and The International Research-Based Pharmaceutical

    Association.

    Alvin Miu Executive Director, Group Chief Financial & Operating Officer of MF Jebsen Group

    Alvin Miu joined the Group in 2010 as Group CFO & COO and was appointed Director in 2012. As CFO he

    oversees the financial management of the whole Group. As COO he is responsible for implementing thestrategies that the Board has set for the companies within the Group. A graduate of The University of Sydney

    with Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws (Hons), Alvin also holds an MBA from The Wharton School,

    The University of Pennsylvania. Before joining the MF Jebsen Group, he worked with the A.S. Watson Group (retail

    division of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd) in a number of senior finance and management positions. Prior to that, he

    was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company and A.T. Kearney.

    Elsa Pau Publisher and CEO, WealthAsia Group

    Elsa is the Publisher and CEO of WealthAsia Group. She is a publisher, conference organiser and social

    entrepreneur, whose interest is to innovate and drive propositions that benefit real change for the community.

    Elsa is a finance industry veteran, Editor-in-Chief of BENCHMARK Magazine and Senior Partner at Estate

    Solutions Group, an estate and philanthropic planning consultancy for high net worth individuals. Prior to

    setting up WealthAsia, she was Managing Director at Tai Fook Wealth Management and group head at Allen

    Perkins Financial. Elsa is also a conference moderator, business consultant, trainer and coach in the financeindustry.

    Yat Siu Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Outblaze

    Yat Siu is the founder and CEO of Outblaze (www.outblaze.com), a digital services and solutions company

    specialising in gaming, cloud technology, and smartphone/tablet software development. A serial entrepreneur,

    Yat is also a founder and board director of mobile games publisher Animoca (www.animoca.com), which in its

    first year published 200 apps and accrued over 60 million players before attracting investments from Intel

    Capital and IDG-Accel. He is the Fonero Leader for the Asia region and head of FON operations in Hong Kong.

    Yat is also a board director for TurnOut Ventures, a joint venture between Turner Entertainment and Outblaze

    Investments. Yat began his technology career working for Atari Germany in 1990 and in 1995 he moved to

    Hong Kong to establish Hong Kong Cybercity/Freenation, Asias first free web page and email provider. In

    1998 he set up Outblaze, a multiple award-winning company that pioneered cloud-like multilingual white label

    web applications. In 2009, IBM purchased Outblazes messaging division and used it to open the first IBM

    cloud computing lab in Asia. He has received several awards including the URENCO Innovation Award and

    Outstanding Entrepreneur Award at the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards. He is a director of the Asian

    Youth Orchestra.

    Mike Yahng Chief Representative, China, Silicon Valley Bank

    Mike Yahng is SVB's Chief Representative in China and manages all of SVBs initiatives and activities in

    China. With more than 30 years of experience in international finance and banking, Mike joined SVB in 2008

    from TianDi Growth Capital where he was involved with private equity fundraising and investments in China.

    Previously he was a managing director for Trinergy Finance, the interim CEO of Shenzhen Development Bank

    and CEO of Magically, Inc. After serving as a lieutenant in the US Navy, he began his career in banking and

    spent more than 20 years with Bank of Boston in a variety of capacities, including managing operations in

    Greater China. Mike received his BA from Yale College and MBA from Harvard Business School. He sits on theboards of Bank of Hangzhou, UPG, and First Sino Bank, the only Taiwanese JV Bank in China. He is based in

    Shanghai and Hong Kong.

    IT members, through site integration and direct emails).

    Asia is a focus for our company. A large proportion of our reviewers and experts come from Asia Pacific. In essence, our site is

    Pinnacle Engines US pinnacle-engines.comPinnacle Engines is a Silicon Valley-based technology company, which aims to become a global leader in the efficient

    Judging ProcessThe 12 finalists will each be invited to do a 2-minute elevator pitch, covering the problem that the venture is tackling, the solution, its competitiveadvantage and what it would like to benefit from participating in the StartmeupHK Venture Programme. The judges and the audience will selectSIX to compete for the 3 Grand StartmeupHK Awards. The 6 selected ventures will then be divided into 2 groups. Each of the ventures will give a5-minute presentation, followed by a 15 min Q&A for each group from the judges and audience.

    The scores from the judges and the Forum participants will constitute 80% and 20% of the total respectively.
