Which Vegetable Makes the Best Indicator?

Objectives:To plan an investigation into using vegetables as

indicatorsOutcomes: Lvl 5 –

I can identify significant variables in investigations & select which to investigate.

I can describe a clear method for my investigation.

I can explain why certain pieces of equipment are more appropriate than others.

Hypothesis

• An idea that has yet to be tested

The colour of the vegetable changes how good it is at being an indicator of acids and

alkalis

Independent Variable

• The thing we are changing in our investigation

My independent variable is…

Control Variables

• The things we are keeping the same

My control variables are…

Equipment

• Make a list of the equipment you used using the equipment wall

• What was each piece used for?

The equipment I will need:

Method

• On the next slide is the method used for making red cabbage indicator

water

Step 1 Chop up the cabbage.

Step 5 Carefully pour the dye solution into a bottle for storage. This can now be used as an indicator.

Step 2 Put the cabbage into a conical flask.

Step 3 Half - fill the conical flask with water.

Step 4 On a tripod and gauze, boil the mixture for 4 minutes. Next, allow the apparatus to cool down.
