Entry Level Startup and Shutdown

TASK 1

Make sure the Power is switched on. Press the Start button.

TASK 2

USER NAME: Student ID NumberPASSWORD: Passw@rd (this must be typed exactly as shown)

With FIRST TIME log in you will be asked to create your own password. Your password MUST CONTAIN:

Examples to choose from or you can make your own:

Allow the computer to load up to the Desktop.

TASK 3

Enter your USER NAME here ..

Enter your NEW PASSWORD here ..

TASK 4

Shut down the computer by clicking Start or Office Button. Click on small arrow. Choose Log off.

TASK 5

When the computer has shut down, press the ON button again.

When asked for User Name and Password, enter the USER NAME AND PASSWORD as TASK 3 to practice entering your new password.

This will be how you will log on for the remainder of the course.

Outcome 1 Enter Text and Numbers and then use Proofreading

Proofreading is when you finish typing something and then you check it over to make sure that it has no grammar or spelling mistakes.

TASK 1

Open Microsoft Word

Click on Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Word (at this point you can right click the mouse and chose pin to taskbar for easy access in the future).

Type the following text:

The Spanish City of Granada is set beneath the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The city is dominated by the 4 clay red walls of Alhambra Palace which houses the finest examples of Moorish art and architecture. Many painters, poets and writers have been inspired by the grandeur of the region.

Outcome 1 Save Files, Find and Open Files from within Folders

TASK 1

Open Files

Follow the instructions to see where your work will be stored and how to find and open files.

ALL YOUR WORK WILL BE SAVED IN MY DOCUMENTS ON THE H DRIVE. THIS WILL BE IDENTIFIED BY YOUR USER NAME.

Make a folder

In My Documents, click on File, slide the mouse down to New and slide across to Folder.

Name a folder

As soon as the new folder is made, all you have to do is type the name (there is no need to click the mouse in the box). If you do this by mistake, right-click the mouse on the words New Folder and choose rename. Name the folder.

Save a document

Click Office ButtonChoose SaveEnter File NameChoose where to Save In choose My Documents or Removable Disk if you are using USB pen (My Documents should come up automatically) if not click on the down arrow to find the DRIVE where you want save.

Double click on the FOLDER you wish to save in, or create a NEW FOLDER at this point

Save As

You choose this function if you want to change an existing document and save it with a different filename, but you also want to keep the original document.

TASK 1

Create the following folders in My Documents:

(2012) (2011 ) (Word Processing) ( Exam Practice)

(Email) (Internet) (IT Applications)

TASK 2

Save your Word document as Granada. Save In the Word Processing folder. (see page 6)

TASK 3

Delete the folders 2011 and 2012. (Click on right mouse button and choose delete).

TASK 4

Close by clicking the X in top right corner until you get back to the desktop.

Find the file Granada (Make your own notes below on how to find a file)

Print Preview Click on Office Button, Print and Print Preview. This will show how the page is going to be printed. Check the white space and adjust spacing or font size, if necessary.

Open a new document

Type your name, press the return key twice to give a clear line at the start of your document.Type the following text:

A word processor is a computer program which enables the computer to be used as a very clever typewriter, making it easy to produce correct and well presented text. Word processors have many advantages over typewriters because documents can be stored on disks for later use and do not have to be re-typed each time they are required.

Why is a word processor used it is easier to read, able to send via electronic means.

The word processor allows you to change the appearance of the document in many different ways. Nearly all word processors now include a spell checker and thesaurus to help you in correcting your text.
