CHALLENGE CHANGE!!!!!!

Changes can be challenging, but this one isn't. The due date is now our September 26th

meeting instead of the August 22nd. That leaves you an extra month to finish. You're welcome.

Remember, black and white and one bright. No more than 120" diameter. When you bring your challenge in September, and if you want to have it in our show (and we hope

you do), bring the completed entry form with you. Your quilts and forms will be

carefully and respectfully taken by the Quilt Show Genie (Donna Holloway) for

QUILT SHOW IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER

And before you know it, it's going to be quilt show time! The show committee has met once again. Janice McKee has prepared

400 postcards to be sent to senior centers and the like. She also has a large sign and business cards advertising the show traveling with the opportunity quilt. Newsletter people of other guilds have been contacted, and a large email blast should come

out closer to show time. Meantime be sure to tell everyone you know.

Donna Holloway has the quilt registration form on the website. She will also have hard copies at the next meeting. It's time

to start filling those out. All quilts, even those in the bed turning, will need to be registered. Although a formal label is not

required, please have your name firmly affixed to the back of the quilt. Your quilts can be turned in to Donna at the September

guild meeting, or can be dropped at the show site Thursday, Sept. 28th between 12:00 and 2:00. Please use the front door.

The bed turning, chaired by Jennie Fowlke-Cully, will be held at 10:30, 1:30, 3:30 both days, and an extra session at 6:30 on

Friday. The 1:30 bed turnings will display Peggy Skaith's quilts. If you have a quilt with a story, please enter it.

Chrysa Zinzer has come up with some different faces for vendors. All vendor spaces have been filled. A new one will feature chair and hand massages. The cost will be $1.00 per minute with a 10 minute minimum. You will need to schedule this either

on line or at the show. Sorry, no scissor sharpener this year.

Mary Funk will again be in charge of a bake sale. Please start thinking about what you would like to make. If you have

questions about what sells or how to package your goods, please ask her.

We will be setting up the racks on Thursday beginning at 1:00 p.m. Sue Tuttle, who is in charge of quilt hanging, will begin her

duties at 2:00. She has asked that anyone offering to assist hanging quilts be comfortable going up and down a 6 foot ladder.

After all quilts are hung the show committee will judge best of theme.

We will be needing lots of volunteers. There will be a sign-up sheet at the guild meeting. If you volunteer you will get into the show free the day of your shift. We're hoping to have enough people to keep each shift to 2 hours. We've worked pretty hard to

get a good show put together, but it will take all of you to pull it off successfully. Janette Sheldon and Kim Cawthon

MEETING SPEAKER

UPDATE - Starlight Quilters Guild Bus Trip to Hamilton, Missouri on Saturday, September 23rd

I still need 19 more paid registrations for the trip to be a go! Non-quilting friends are

welcome. The trip has been advertised since mid-May and in addition to it being advertised to

members of the Starlight Quilters Guild via the guild newsletter, emails and on the SQG

website, I've advertised to six area quilt guilds and two non-guild related quilting

groups. Unless some miracle happens, it is not realistic that I will receive the remaining 19

paid registrations by the next Starlight Quilters Guild meeting Tuesday, August 22. I have

informed the bus company of our registration status and they have confirmed that I need to

cancel by August 23 in order to receive a full refund of our deposit for the bus.

A refund check will be issued if the trip is canceled. Since some of you paid for your quilting

friends, I would appreciate your assistance by informing them of the situation. If interested contact: Renee Arnett ([email protected])

PROPOSED BY-LAW AMENDMENT

At the July meeting of the Board of Directors, a motion passed to amend the existing by-laws as follows:

III. Membership

1. Membership is open to everyone.

2. The membership year shall be from January April 1 through December March 31.

3. Annual membership dues shall be $25.00. Members joining after July October 1 shall pay one-half of the annual

membership dues for the remaining calendar year.

4. A Junior Membership is available to students up to 18 years of age and shall have annual dues of $15.00.

Pursuant to VIII of the by-laws, this proposed amendment is being published in the newsletter and will be voted on at the

August guild meeting.

This amendment will have no fiscal impact on the guild. It will assist the membership chair by having the entire membership

drive handled by one chair person. Previously the outgoing membership chair has started the drive in October and November. In

addition, it will assist in reporting the accurate size of our guild for participation in KCRQF. The size of our guild impacts the

space we get for hanging quilts as well as the percentage of proceeds we receive.

If you have any questions please contact Janette Sheldon: [email protected] or 913-486- 5694.

Library Corner - Cheryl Tomson & Connie Passaro

I’m sure everyone is looking forward to hearing Nancy Mahoney speak this month. The library currently has one of

her books, “Rich Traditions--Scrap Quilts to Paper Piece”. We can add other books she has written if some of you

have suggestions. Thanks to Donna di Natale for donations this month: “Modern Triangle Quilts” by Rebecca Bryan,

“Stained Glass Quilts Reimagined” by Allie Aller, and “Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses” by Linda Franz, a

fascinating account of English paper piecing with a modern update to print on fabric or paper using Inklingo. As

always, let us know what interests you and we’ll see about adding it to the library.

Starlight Express August 2017

Boom! Are we excited about the August meeting or what? Along with our national speaker, class opportunities, retreat opportunities and bus trip opportunities, we will be planning for Christmas. Whaaaaat? The Bucket Babes are doing all things Christmas so you can get a start on all those "good kids" on your list (the bad ones go on another list that we will not mention). There will also be one bucket that will appeal to you if you are a Farmer's Wife....or if you aren't. Just like Christmas, you have to wait to see what we have "under the tree/bucket" for you. Also, in the spirit of Christmas, check out the ‘Giveaway Table’. We have had such incredible donations from all of you that we decided it was time to do a little sharing for some of you that never get to yell "that's me" when we call your number. So, although we will be giving away some fabulous items, don't forget to visit the Bucket Babes. Remember, with The Babes you don't have to be "good" you just have to be lucky. As you know, $5.00 will get you 6 tickets and $1.00 will get you one, unless you shop early, then there are bonus tickets just for you. Happy Holidays and continue to be the best guild ever. HO, HO, HO.

Lea Robrahn - Project Linus

Starlight members have made 326 blankets. That’s terrific! The need in our area is great and more are needed. The goal is for

every member to donate at least 3 completed blankets every year. There are kits at every meeting that contain instructions and

cut pieces to make a top. Easy! Pick up one at the next meeting.

Some things to remember for Project Linus blankets:

• When using fleece as a back, skip the batting

• Trim all threads

• The smallest useable size is 36" x 36”, the best size is between 40” by 50” and 40” by 60”

• When tying, make the ties between 6" - 8" apart

• When pillowcasing, remember to sew around the edge of the quilt.

• Take part in the Project Linus Mystery Quilt Challenge. If you designate Kansas City, the funds will stay in this area.

Registration opens August 21, 2017.

Starlight Quilters Guild Fall Retreat- Donna Holloway

We had a brisk sign up for our Fall Retreat during the July guild meeting. At this time, we have 20 quilters joining us, but the good news is there is plenty of space for more! Retreat will be on November 10, 11, and 12 at Unity Village in Lee's Summit, MO. Cost will be $200 (double) or $300 (single); and, includes your own 4' of table space, 2 nights sleeping accommodations, and meals (Friday dinner; Continental Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner on Saturday, and full hot breakfast on Sunday). Each room has its own mini-fridge for you to store any special snacks/beverages as well. In addition, I will be raffling off a big board ironing surface. Sign-ups for the retreat will close after our September guild meeting with final payment being due by October 1st. Any questions, please contact Donna Holloway (913 433 6752); or [email protected]

EXCHANGED EXCHANGE - Janette Sheldon

So here we are facing the second month of something new. Lang Davis was the lucky winner of the last round of

blocks. Kristi Orr was the first winner of the fat quarter exchange. Unfortunately there weren't very many for her

to win. So let's give it a whirl and participate this month. As per your request, this month we will be exchanging

autumn fat quarters. Remember to make it good quality, clean fabric - you know something you would like to win. Each fat quarter you bring gives you a chance to win them all.

I’d Rather Be Stitchin’ – Donna di Natale A series of quick and easy recipes to get you out of the kitchen and back to stitchin’.

. YUMMY REFRIGERATOR PICKLES

Here is a delicious way to use those cucumbers piling up on your counter, or the ones you couldn’t resist at the Farmer’s Market. This recipe makes about 4 pints of not too sweet, not too

sour, just right pickles.

INGREDIENTS 6 cups thinly sliced pickling cucumbers (the ones with bumps all over them) 2 cups thinly sliced onion (I like to use those little (2”) white bulb shaped onions) 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 ½ cups white vinegar ¾ cup sugar ¾ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon mustard seeds ½ teaspoon celery seeds ½ teaspoon ground turmeric ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper ½ teaspoon black or mixed peppercorns

DIRECTIONS 1. Divide and layer the cucumbers, onion slices and garlic slices into clean glass jars. 2. Combine vinegar and remaining ingredients in a sauce pan and stir well. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute. 3. Pour liquid into jars, distributing seasonings evenly. 4. Screw clean lids onto the jars and refrigerate. Pickles are ready to eat in about 4 days, if you can wait that long, and will keep in the refrigerator for about 1 month.

STARLIGHT QUILTERS GUILD contributed a total of $778 to the OVARIAN

CANCER RESEARCH ALLIANCE from the sale of RUTHANN BONIN’S STASH!

Thanks to all who participated.

Smile! When a quilt you’re asked to hold, Don’t be shy! Be brave and bold!

I know you’d like a closer look,

But that’s really not the job you took.

You’re holding them for all to see,

So here’s some tips for them and me…

Hold them facing straight ahead,

Maybe pretend that you’re a bed!

Lift them high so the back can see,

And please don’t sway, you’re not a tree!

If you hold it high and steady, I’ll make sure my camera’s ready.

Have a quilt for tell and show?

Here’s some things for you to know.

Please remember to say your name,

This is your time for Starlight fame!

When you’re done and walk away,

Use the far side and I’ll say yay!

Avoid the center and I’ll have a clear shot,

For the next presenter it will help a lot!

And those that are holding, please help me out,

When they’re shown too quickly I just want to pout.

It’s easy to hurry when it’s getting late,

We’re all very busy with lots on our plate.

But every quilt deserves to be seen,

And every quilter to feel like a queen.

If a picture of you AND your quilt you desire,

Just tell me and I’ll take one before we retire!
