The first Starbucks opens in Seattle. The name comes from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, a classic American novel about the 19th century whaling industry. The seafaring name seemed appropriate for a store that imported the world’s finest coffees to the cold, thirsty people of Seattle.

Three friends, Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker, who all had a passion for fresh coffee, opened a small shop and began selling fresh-roasted, gourmet coffee beans and brewing and roasting accessories.

Howard Schultz joined Starbucks in 1982. While on a business trip in Italy, he visited Milan’s famous espresso bars. Impressed with their popularity and culture, he saw their potential in Seattle.

In the 1990’s the demand for great coffee allowed Starbucks to expand beyond Seattle, first to the rest of the United States, then across the world. After becoming one of the first companies to offer stock options to its part-time employees, Starbucks becomes a publicly traded company.

In 2000, the Starbucks phenomenon continued. Starbucks has more than 6,000 locations in over 30 countries.

Wake up and smell the coffee -- Starbucks is everywhere. The world's #1 specialty coffee retailer, Starbucks has more than 16,850 coffee shops in about 40 countries.

The outlets offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as roasted beans, coffee accessories, and teas.

Starbucks operates more than 8,800 of its shops, which are located in about 10 countries (mostly in the US), while licensees and franchisees operate more than 8,000 units worldwide (primarily in shopping centers and airports).

The company also owns the Seattle's Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia coffee brands. In addition, Starbucks markets its coffee through grocery stores and licenses its brand for other food and beverage products.

People are saying Starbucks "has caught up with itself." The world remembers the same thing was said, almost word for word, about McDonald's in 2004, when naysayers said the burger giant was all played out before the chain reinvented itself and made a huge expansion overseas.

Jim Cramer, from of Jim Cramer's Mad Money TV Program, expects Starbucks to be a repeat of the McDonald's story as the coffee company revamps its menu, focuses on customer service and expands its presence abroad.

In 2006, Valerie O'Neil, a Starbucks spokeswoman, said that the logo is an image of a "twin-tailed siren". The logo has been significantly modernized over the years. In the first version, which was based on a 17th-century "Norse" woodcut, the Starbucks siren was topless and had a fully visible double fish tail

In the second version, which was used from 1987–92, her breasts were covered by her flowing hair, but her navel was still visible, and the fish tail was cropped slightly.

In the third version, used between 1992 and 2011, her navel and breasts are not visible at all, and only vestiges remain of the fish tails.

I learned that although there are many competitors when it comes to coffee, Starbucks is my all time favorite place to go. They have many different products a consumer can purchase that are useful to everyday life. This being a “Hot Cup of Jo” every morning and different apparel items. Even though Starbucks can be expensive at times, going there every once in awhile is a nice treat to anyone who enjoys coffee.
