1Preparation for Repair

1) Remove Nose Cone2) Remove handpiece from air supply

Swivel O-Ring Inspection: Examine o-rings for obvious wear or damage. Damagedor worn swivel o-rings may result in air leaks and/or power loss. If either of theseconditions occur the o-rings must be replaced.

STEP

2Seperate Body from Backend

Place a strip of Emery Cloth & Leather [TSX007]around the forward edge of the largest diameter ofthe housing. Using your left hand, grip EmeryCloth & Leather with 6” Pliers [THR062].

Using a 6” Adjustable Wrench [THR080], adjustwrench to match the flats and position on thebackend. Rotate in a counter clockwise directionto losen Backend from the Body.

Using an 1/8” Punch [TMX004], apply pressureto the Main Drive Gear {_____} while unscrew-ing the backend assemly by hand. NOTE: Apply-ing pressure to the Main Drive Gear eases theunthreading of the backend.

After the Backend has been unthreaded, use a 1/8” Punch to push the Motor Assembly completelyout of the Body.

STEP

2Seperate Body from Backend (continued)

Inspection of Motor Housing: Examine MotorHousing for obvious damage/dents to Housing and/or threads. Check for corrosion. If these conditionsexist, replace.

3Disassembly of Backend (Swivel)

Remove the Air Distributor by pushing from theswivel side using a 1/8” Punch [TMX004]. NOTE:Do over a tray or table top. The Alignment Ball mayfall loose as the Distributor is being removed. Littleforce should be required to remove Distributor fromthe Backend.

Inspection of Air Distributor: Inspect for obviousdamage or corrosion. If so, replace.

Remove the Reversing Ring. By pulling directly fromthe Backend, remove the two large o-rings{LST182}using a Dental Pick [THR066].

Inspection of Reversing Ring & Backend: Inspectthe Backend for dents or obvious damage includingthe threads. The two o-rings are standard replace-ment items.

5Remove Rear Bearing Carrier

Remove the large shim using an X-Acto Knife[THR060] or Dental Pick [THR066].

Grasp Bearing Carrier with your fingers andpull directly away from the Motor Assembly.

Using the X-Acto Knife, gently elevate thesmall shim from the rear of the Rotor. Then, continue to remove with your fingers.

Remove the Bearing {082-000} from the Car-rier. Place the carrier on the Disassembly Block[THR009], over a hole larger then the bearing.Remove bearing from carrier by gently tap-ping the bearing’s inner-race, using a 1/8”Punch.

Discard the bearing after removing from thecarrier. NOTE: The bearing is a recommendedreplacement part.

Inspection of Bearing Carrier: Inspect for ob-vious damage.

6Remove Motor Housing, Blades & Spring

Slowly pull Motor Housing Directly awayfrom the Rotor.

NOTE: Blades are under a spring load and willtend to pop out or fall from their location. Usecaution not to lose the blades or springs.

Blades (set of 5) {LST017}Springs (set of 5) {LST019}

Remove each blade from each slot, taking carenot to lose or damage springs.

Gently remove Rotor Springs with an X-ActoKnife [THR060]. Be careful not to lose thesprings.

Inspection of Rotor Blades & Springs: CheckRotor Blades for worn grooves, breaks, chipsand wear. Inspect Springs for obvious dam-age, replace if needed.

7Removal of Front Bearing Carrier & Main Drive Gear

Place Rotor Assembly in Disassembly Block[THR009] leaving the Rotor suspended.

Gently tap the middle of the Main Drive Gear{_____}using a 1/16” Stub Punch[THR081], completely removing the MainDrive Gear and Front Bearing Carrier.

Remove the Bearing {082-000} from theCarrier. Place the carrier on the Disassem-bly Block [THR009], over a hole larger then thebearing. Remove bearing from carrier by gentlytapping the bearing’s inner-race, using a 1/8”Punch.

NOTE: The bearing is a mandtitory replacementpart.

Inspection of the Bearing Carrier: Inspect forgrooves or rough finish.

NOTE: Check both ends of the Rotor for scor-ing and/or burs. If groove appears on either car-rier or Rotor, lap part on 600 grit wet dry sand-paper in a figure eight motion until smooth.

To Debur Rotor: Using the Assembly Block, place 600 grit wet & dry sandpaper over the holeclosest in size to the Rotor Shaft. Then push theRotor Shaft through the sandpaper and rotateuntil smooth.

8 Set bearing into the Front Bearing Carrier.Gently press bearing into place using the Ar-bor Press [THR003].

STEP

9Install Front Bearing Carrier Assembly to Rotor

Installation of Front Bearing

Place the Bearing Carrier face-down into thecorrect hole of the Assembly Block [THR009].Do not allow Bearing Carrier to touch theAssembly Block.

Install Rotor, long end down, into the Bear-ing. Using the Arbor Press, gently press theRotor into the Bearing about 1/2 way down -do not make full contact.

Insert a .002 Shim [THR084] between the Ro-tor & Bearing Carrier, then continue to pressuntil contact is made.

NOTE: Do not over press (torque).

Remove the Shim and make sure that the Bear-ing Carrier spins freely. If not, disassemble andrepeat this step.

10Install Main Drive Gear

Place the Rotor Assembly into the Assembly Block[THR009]. NOTE: Do not rest on the Bearing Car-rier.

Place the Main Drive Gear over the front of the Rotorand, using the Arbor Press [THR003], gently press intoplace.

NOTE: Viewing the third picture, you can see that theMain Drive Gear is pressed down onto the shaft as faras it can.

STEP

11Install Rotor Blades, Springs & Housing

Using a Small Screwdriver [THR097] or X-acto-Knife [THR060], apply grease [TPX010] to thetip then touch the Spring (the grease acts as anadhesive during installation). Install Spring intoSpring Hole on Rotor.

Place the Rotor Blades into the slots on the Rotor, smaller beveled edges down. As the Blades areplaced into the slots it will be necessary to usefingers to help keep them in place. Then slide theMotor Housing (non ported side first) over theAssembly into place.

15Reassemble the Backend

Install the Large O-Rings into the O-RingGroove.

Install Reversing Ring with tapered side towardsthe threads of the Backend. NOTE: Before as-sembly, put a dab of grease in the AlignmentBall Pocket located inside the Reversing Ring.

Position the Reversing Ring into the neutral po-sition, then place the Alignment Ball into thepocket. NOTE: When positioned correctly, theAlignment Ball will set close to flush in theinteral groove of the Backend.

Installing the Distributor:

Install the Distributor into the Backend beingcareful to set the Alignment Slot over the Align-ment Ball. Gently press into place. Do not force.

16Install the Motor Assembly & Backend to Body

Set the Reversing Ring into the forward mostposition.

Set the Alignment Pins into the large slot on theBackend.

In a vertical position, slide the Body down overthe Motor until the threads make contact withit, then gently screw down in a clockwise di-rection until hand tight.

NOTE: If resistance is met, begin this proce-dure again. Do not force the Backend in place- damage may result.

NOTE: Do not hold onto the Reversing Ringto thread the Backend and Body together. TheReserving Ring must be in the foward mostpostion when tightening or the handpiece willnot function properly.

Use 6” Pliers [THR062] with Emery Cloth andLeather [TSX007] on the front of the Body anduse a 6” Adjustable Wrench [THR080] on theBackend to completely tighten the Backendto the Body.
