Our Programs:

About STARskaters STARskaters was founded in 2008 by Jim O’Neill, a Sugar Land, Texas businessman, hockey player and USA Hockey referee. In 2011, STARskaters was named a US Paralympic Sport Club. Events and programs are staffed entirely by volunteers who are hockey players, referees, skating instructors, figure skaters and rink professionals. Volunteers donate their experience, time and resources to provide an ice skating experience for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities.

If you would like to get involved, contact us at: [email protected] If you know anyone who would benefit from any of the STARskaters programs, contact us at: [email protected]

Our Mission: “To provide an on-ice experience for individuals with physical or developmental disabilities”

You Can Help: Donate your time, money, used equipment or tell a friend about STARskaters.org

Skate Therapy classes are staffed by experienced figure skating instructors.

These specially designed classes allow individuals with a wide range of physical or developmental disabilities to learn to skate and enjoy the cool on-ice experience.

Sled hockey was invented at a rehabilitation center in Stockholm, Sweden in the early 1960’s. The game follows standard ice hockey rules with players sitting in

specially designed sleds and propel themselves using hockey sticks with picks on the end of the stick. Sled hockey provides a recreational opportunity from local areas up to the USA National Sled Team and the Paralympic games. In the 2010, the USA Sled Hockey team went undefeated on their way to winning the Gold Medal in Vancouver. In 2012 the National Team again won Gold in Norway in International competition with four Texas players on the roster. Sled hockey requires no previous skating or hockey experience and is growing rapidly in the U.S. Players are typically "hooked” from the first moment they take the ice. Programs are available in Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. For more information visit www.TexasSledHockey.org
