Star Construction• A pop star needs to have a USP (Unique

Selling Point). An example is Michael Jackson, who had the shiny one glove and the rolled up trousers above the ankles. Justin Bieber is unique because of his age, style and hairstyles. The audiences will see him as a teenage sensation as he is very young and already so successful and talented, this makes him stand out from the other artist’s as it is unique and different, because we are used to seeing mature or young adults usually in the music scene. Also, Justin Bieber has different hairstyles, which is usually a trend for male fans who look up to him. It’s really unique as Justin Bieber creates his own hairstyles different to others. Lastly, Justin has a unique and fashionable dress sense. He wears really cool and current clothing, and no matte whether its good or bad, it always works to attract his fans.

Industry and Audience• As years have gone by trends have changed

in music and modern culture, therefore Justin Bieber has to keep up with this, and it is an advantage for him as he is young and knows what’s good for his fans and what is currently on trend or in fashion. His image has also changed over the years, he has become more matured and has got into more scandals in the media like getting into fights with reporters and spitting at the paparazzi and fans, giving him a “bad boy” status, which lead to more attention towards him. Justin Bieber has a very huge fan following, and the majority are females, who enjoy his music, however most of all because of his good looks and his image. He has over 40 million followers on his Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Ideology and Culture• Like other male artists, Justin Bieber

is a fashion icon to many people and especially males for example, his hairstyles, his styles of clothing and looks. His fans look up to him and take inspiration from it, so they can look like him, as he is their idol.

• Justin Bieber is connected to popular social media sites like Face book, Twitter and Instagram. He interacts with his fans through these social network sites on a personal level, and also it helps to promote himself if he has something to release. Also, pop stars can create awareness to issues in the world through these types of sites, for example Justin Bieber donates money and supports charities like Red Cross, City of Hope and Alzheimer’s association.

Character and Personality• Justin Bieber is a stereotypical

young male, he is good looking, he’s confident and is talented, as he can sing, act and dance. He has a very confident persona, the way he performs and carries himself at awards, he has this “swagger” about him. His record label will know that his character and personality sells, so they will exploit it by doing more things other than music, like his own perfume or merchandise.

Reflection

• The theory is very important if you are trying to create star image for an upcoming artist. This task has helped me to understand that to create an image for my artist, I will have to have a USP (unique selling point) and have a suitable way to market my artist, which could establish a growing fan base.
