Emergency Response – Role of the National Carrier

Assisting Carrier Response

The assisting carrier may upon request of the operating carrier be required to provide initial and continued response to the emergency until the operating carrier’s Emergency Response Team arrives at the site.

Example:

SWISS gave assistance to Ethiopian Airways after high jacking of flight ET701/ 17FEB 2014 from Addis Abeba to Rome.

Co-pilot decided to land in GVA seeking for asylum.

In general a Star Alliance Airport Team (SAAT) is established at all airports where five or more Star Alliance carriers operate from or at prioritized airports to facilitate the Star Alliance mission

Relationship:

Supported by Star Alliance Products and Services organization through the regional directors (Headquarter in Frankfurt)

Chairperson:

Chair of the Star Alliance Airport Team (SAAT) is the Star Alliance Airport Coordinator (SAAC) appointed by the Facilitation and Station Advisory Group

SAAT members:

Are encouraged to participate at meetings convened by the Star Alliance Airport Coordinator

(SAAC) to develop and make recommendations to further the Star Alliance mission.

SAAC – Star Alliance Airport Coordinator

Role and responsibilities of the Star Alliance Airport Coordinator (SAAC)

- Participate and support implementation of Star Alliance projects, products and activities driven by the Star Alliance group

- Identify local opportunities that provide convenience and add value to customers, resolution of local issues, share and collocated facilities or other joint services unique to the airport etc.

- Demonstrate one “Star Alliance voice” among local authorities (airport etc.) and support lobbying to safeguard an equal level playing field to strengthen the Star Alliance position

- Investigate and provide information as requested for Star Alliance initiatives.

At the moment there is 6 units of Type 22 available at Star Alliance check-inzone, used by 6 airlines. (26% of the total checked baggage in the zone)

Future project

«Léo»

The latest state-of-the-art robot, which carries the customer’s baggageto the check-in counter automatically.

The process is similar, using the same software than the SSBD, in use in front of the terminal. Currently in test phase(10-18.05.2016). This new technologycould potentially be used by all airlinesof the Star Alliance zone.

This project has been developpedjointly by SITA, Genève Aéroportand SWISS
