PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTION

“THERE IS NO SECOND CHANCE WITH FIRE

- DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME”

May ’2013

Page 16: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

PASSIVE FIRE SUPPRESSION & FIRESTOP SYSTEMS

Passive fire suppression cable coatings – preventing fire propagation & smoke

generation

- Intumescent technology based

- Ablative technology based

Passive firestop barriers (mortar & mineral wool based) – compartmentation

against the spread of fire & smoke.

Page 17: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

1. THE ROLE OF CABLE FIRE

SUPPRESSION COATINGS IS TO:

a) Prevent fire propagation on cable surfaces

b) Prevent the cables from igniting & causing

fire accidents, due to internal short

circuiting

c) Ensure limited period cable fire survivability-

circuit integrity, when exposed to direct

external fires

WHAT ARE

PASSIVE FIRE SUPPRESSION – CABLE COATINGS

: Test Protocol IEC 332 (Single)

Test Protocol FM 3971 (Grouped)

: Test Protocol : As Above

d) Prevent the generation /outgassing of toxic fumes & smoke during fire exposure

: Test Protocol IEC 331.

Page 18: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

PASSIVE FIRE SUPPRESSION – CABLE COATINGS

ROLE OF DFT:

• Different cable fire suppression coatings, will clear

the above test protocols, with varying DFT’s.

Protection is naturally only ensured, if above DFT’s

are correctly applied.

Page 19: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

TYPES OF CABLE FIRE SUPPRESSION

COATINGS AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE TODAY:

1) Ablative Technology based.

2) Intumescent Technology based

Page 20: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

WHAT IS ABLATIVE TECHNOLOGY AND HOW DOES

IT WORKS?

• Restricts Fire propagation by releasing water molecules (at 250-350C heat exposure) that help to reduce surface temp. One time sacrificial reaction.

• After water release, cable surface becomes exposed to Fire and is available as a fuel source, for subsequent fire propagation. Therefore works only as a short term fire retardant system.

• Effective only to restrict fire propagation caused due to internal electrical short circuiting /short term fire exposure (few minutes).

• Does not provide a thermal barrier to the inner core from heat damage and is unable to protect the same, from outside fire/heat, for more than a few minutes, especially in cables <100mm dia..

Page 21: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

ABLATIVE TECHNOLOGY

• Advantages: Weather /water immersion resistant, therefore suitable for

both indoor & outdoor use.

• Disadvantages:

- Provides short term protection.

- Needs >1mm DFT to clear IEC 332 surface fire propagation test protocol.

- Limited performance under test protocol IEC 331 cable fire survivability.

- Will only clear the minimum 20 minutes IEC 331 test protocol, with >3.5mm

DFT on cables with dia >100mm. On smaller cable dia’s, cannot provide

cable fire survivability-circuit integrity.

- Both cable dia’s & DFT’s, thus need to be kept in mind, when attempting to

achieve cable fire survivability – circuit integrity, with this technology.

Page 22: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

WHAT IS INTUMESCENT TECHNOLOGY AND HOW

DOES IT WORK ?

• Restricts Fire propagation via the generation of a non-combustible char, that

completely covers the fire exposed cable surface area and therefore converts

the same into a non flammable surface.

• During fire/heat exposure, coating expend up to 65 times and also provides a

thermal barrier to protect the inner core from heat damage (for a certain time

period), thus preventing short-circuit possibilities, due to outside heat /fire.

Char remains /protects till disturbed, thus providing long term protection.

• Having good rating against IEC-332, IEC-331, IEEE-383.

• This technology is thus suitable to prevent fire propogation both from cable

internally generated fires, as well as high intensity external fires.

Page 23: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

Advantages:

STANDARD INTUMESCENT TECHNOLOGY

- Needs only 0.50 mm DFT to clear IEC 332 surface fire propagation test

protocol. With higher DFT will naturally provide superior protection.

- Will enable limited period cable fire survivability circuit integrity, as per test

protocol IEC 331, for cable’s even below 100mm dia, with 3.0-3.5 mm DFT.

- Thus can ensure limited period cable fire survivability, on ALL sizes & types of

cables, given correct DFT.

- Char will provide long term cable surface fire protection, vis – a – vis the

ablative technology.

- Provides superior prevention of toxic out gassing from fire exposed cables.

Disadvantages:.

- Intumescent coatings are very sensitive towards water.. (without top coating).

- Need a top coat for prolonged weather /water immersion resistance, therefore

more suitable only for indoor use.

Page 24: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

NEW GENERATION INTUMESCENT TECHNOLOGY

• Fire suppression capabilities same as standard intumescent technology, therefore superior to ablative technology, however does not have the drawback of standard intumescents, i.e. weather /water immersion resistance.

• New generation intumescent technology is fully weather /water immersion resistant & is thus suitable for both indoor & outdoor use.

• Best of both technologies – superior fire suppression /thermal protection of intumescents & superior weather /water immersion resistance of ablatives.

DECISIONS CUSTOMERS NEED TO TAKE:

a) Whether to adopt ablative, standard intumescent or new generation intumescent technologies, based on level of fire protection desired, naturally of course with the selected product, clearing all three key test protocols, i.e. IEC 332, IEC 331 & FM 3971.

b) What DFT to use & where, e.g - ,

• On single cables.

• On grouped cables.

• On cables <100mm dia where fire survivability - circuit integrity under fire conditions is desired.

• On cables >100mm dia where fire survivability – circuit integrity under fire conditions is desired.

Page 27: Stanvac Superon Group - Company Presentation

PRECAUTIONS CUSTOMERS NEED TO TAKE:

• Correct DFT & correct application /installation of

coatings, meeting the three required test protocols, must

therfore be ensured.

• Indoor /Outdoor needs, should be clearly assessed &

decided.

• All three required test protocol approval reports, as

above, should be from reputed labs & should clearly

specify the DFT’S, at which the test protocols, were

passed.
