Pointing the way…..
St. Mother Teresa relates this incident from her life. Once a man came to the home for the dying in
Kalighat, and just walked straight into the ward. Mother Teresa was sitting there. A while later the
man came to Mother and said to her, “I came here with so much hate in my heart; hate for God and
hate for man. I came here empty and embittered, and I saw a sister giving her wholehearted atten-
tion to that patient there and realized that God still lives. Now I go out a different man. I believe
there is a God and He loves us still.” That sister paved the way for God and changed that embit-
tered man’s life.
This weekend the Sunday liturgy of ordinary time gives way to a feast, a great feast. The Birth of
John the Baptist, who was chosen by God to prepare the way for the coming of His Son Jesus into
this world. It is indeed a great feast, a feast of joy, but above all a celebration of mercy. John the
Baptist, as foretold by the prophet Isaiah was the voice to make the way straight for the Lord. He
paved the way for Christ’s coming by his life, preaching and death. John the Baptist’s life and min-
istry pointed people to Jesus Christ. As we read in John’s Gospel “He was not the light, but came
that he might bear witness of the light.” Here we see how John pointed people to Christ. It is signifi-
cant that at the beginning of the passage, people are speculating about whether John himself
might be the Christ. But by the end, after Jesus’ baptism, John the Baptist pointed out the Lamb of
God to his disciples.
John the Baptist’s life has a special meaning for all of us. We are, through our baptism, also called
to be precursors of the Lord. Our baptism gives us an obligation to share our faith and to give wit-
ness to the Way of Jesus, both in word and action. There is no other way by which the average
person can come to know and experience the love of Christ. In that sense, we are all called to be
“preachers”. Our lives individually and collectively are meant to send out a message and an invita-
tion: “Come and join us and share our experience of faith, love and fellowship.” Let us ask John the
Baptist today to help us by the way we live our lives to clear a path which will draw people closer to
knowing and experiencing Christ. We may not be prophets but we are still called to shine the Light.
We are called to testify as to what Jesus did for us. And we are called to show what Jesus has
done for the world by promoting His message of salvation.
Each and every day the Lord is ready to renew us in faith, hope, and love. Like John the Baptist,
the Lord invites each of us to make our life a free-will offering to God. As the Baptist pointed the
right way for his people, each of us in quiet ways can do the same for people in our time. We can
share with our neighbours about the graciousness and the favour of God. The name John
means ‘God is gracious’ or ‘God shows favour’. We too have a significant name, for being Chris-
tians implies that we sharing in the mission of Jesus. We are to be like another Christs to the world.
May we be blessed with the grace of God, to fulfil our mission as faithfully as John the Baptist did.
Blessings
Fr. Dantus Thottathil.

ENTRANCE HYMN
BLESS’D BE GOD OF ISRAEL
Bless’d be the God of Israel,
the everliving Lord,
who come in pow’r to save his own,
his people Israel.
For Israel he raises up,
salvation’s tow’r on high in David’s house
who reigned as king and servant of the Lord.
Through holy prophets did he speak
his word in days of old,
hat he would save us from our foes
and all who bear us ill.
To our ancestors did he give
his covenant of love, so with us all
he keeps his word in love that knows no end.
Of old he gave his solemn oath
to Father Abraham;
his seed a mighty race should be
and bless’d for evermore.
He vowed to set his people free
from fear of ev’ry foe,
that we might serve him all our days
in goodness, love and peace.
O tiny child, your name shall be
the prophet of the Lord;
the way of God you shall prepare
to make his coming known.
You shall proclaim to Israel
salvation’s dawing day,
when God shall wipe away all sins
in his redeeming love.
The rising sun shall shine on us
to bring the light of day
to all who sit in darkest night
and shadow of the grave.
Our footsteps God shall safely guide
to walk the ways of peace.
His name for evermore be bless’d
who lives and loves and saves. © 1969 James Quinn SJ
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:
RESPONSE: I praise you for I am wonder-
fully made.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Alleluia, alleluia! You, child, shall be called
the prophet of the Most High; for you will go
before the Lord to prepare his way. Alleluia!
THANKSGIVING HYMN
O GOD YOU SEARCH ME
O God you search me and you know me,
All my thoughts lie open to your gaze.
When I walk or lie down you are before me:
Ever the maker and keeper of my days.
You know my resting and my rising.
You discern my purpose from afar,
And with love everlasting you besiege me:
In every moment of life and death, you are.
Before a word is on my tongue, Lord,
You have known its meaning through and
through,
You are with me beyond my understanding:
God of my present, my past and future too.
For you created me and shaped me,
Gave me life within my mother’s womb.
For the wonder of who I am I praise you:
Safe in your hands, all creation is made new. © 1993 Bernadette Farrell
RECESSIONAL HYMN
GO NOW YOU ARE SENT FORTH
Go now, you are sent forth
to live what you proclaim;
To show the world you follow Christ
in fact, not just in name.
God now, you are sent forth
To walk this troubled earth,
To share your faith with all we meet
And prove your real worth.
Go now, you are sent forth
As God’s ambassador;
By serving God in those we meet
We love God more and more.
Go now, you are sent forth
And Christ goes with you too.
Today you help God’s kingdom come
In everything you do. © Leo Watt

OFFERTORY HYMN
GRANT TO US
Grant to us, O Lord, a heart renewed;
recreate in us your own Spirit, Lord!
1. Behold, the days are coming,
says the Lord our God,
when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel.
2. Deep within their being
I will implant my law;
I will write it in their hearts
3. I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
4. And for all their faults
I will grant forgiveness;
nevermore will I remember their sins.

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION:
We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and pro-
fess your Resurrection until you come
again.
COMMUNION HYMN
LIKE A SHEPHERD
Like a shepherd he feeds his flock
And gathers the lambs in his arms,
Holding them carefully close to his heart
Leading them home.
Say to the cities of Judah:
Prepare the way of the Lord.
Go to the mountain-top,
Lift your voice:
Jerusalem, here is your God.
I myself will shepherd them,
For others have led them astray.
The lost, I will rescue and heal their
wounds
And pasture them, giving them rest.
Come unto me if you are heavily bur-
dened,
And take my yoke upon your shoulders.
I will give you rest. © 1976 Bob Dufford

STEWARDSHIP:
June 24, 2018 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist
“…Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to
unfasten the sandals of his feet.” – ACTS 13:25
Stewardship is a lifestyle, it’s not a program or a pro-
cess. It’s how we are called to live our lives twenty-
four hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us
to live “God-centered” lives, not “self -centered” lives.
Reflect on your daily activities, do you do them for the
glory of God or for the glory of your own name?

MINISTRY TRAINING WORKSHOPS:
MINISTERS OF THE WORD, MINISTERS OF HOLY
COMMUNION, ALTAR SERVERS, SACRISTANS &
MUSIC MINISTRY
Following the great declaration by Vatican II Council
that the Mass is the source and summit of Christian
life, what we do at Mass and how we do it is signifi-
cant. Liturgy is about order. Two sessions have been
planned for our parish lay ministers:
SUNDAY: 1 July after 8 am Mass Kilcoy
SUNDAY: 8 July after 8 am Mass Woodford
Anyone can attend these workshops. Those who are
or want to be a reader, a minister of holy commun-
ion (both within Mass and as a visitor to the sick, el-
derly and homebound), an altar server, a sacristan
and/or in the music ministry: this training is for you.
Fr Dr David Pascoe has agreed to come and help with
this training and the training is being done as one
session so that everyone hears how the roles fit to-
gether within the Mass.
Thank you to all our ministers for the great work you
do. Please attend this session if you are a minister in
our community, so that together we can make our
Mass and liturgies, great moments of prayer.
NEW ENVELOPES for 2018/19 have finally arrived:
These will be distributed next week for 30 Jun/1 Jul.
