Editorial notesStanford’s setting of the Te Deum, Benedictus and Jubilate Deo in C major was composed in 1909 as part of his Morning and Evening Service together with the Offi ce for Holy Communion Op. 115. The Service was published by Stainer & Bell in 1910. The Te Deum was later orchestrated for brass (3 trumpets and 4 trombones), timpani and organ. According to the biography of Stanford by Harry Plunket Greene (Charles Villiers Stanford, London 1935, 221), Stanford was given the choice to hear one of his services sung at Matins at York Minster in 1923 when he was a guest of the organist, Edward Bairstow. ‘He chose the one in C,’ Bairstow recalled, ‘for he said he had never heard it!’

SourcesS1 Royal School of Church Music. Bound autograph manuscript complete version for choir and organ n.d. 16-stave manuscript paper (except for title page). Plate 307; Fol. 10002. 28pp. Te Deum pp. 1–6; Benedictus pp. 7–11; Jubilate Deo pp. 11–13. System origination of four staves: SATB = two staves; organ = two staves. Four systems per page.

S2 Robinson Library, University of Newcastle, full score of Te Deum in copyist’s hand for 3 trumpets, 4 trombones, timpani and organ n.d. MS 48.

S3 Published score for SATB and organ, Stainer & Bell, 1910.

Editorial methodS1 has been used as the primary source. Where the reading in S1 is in doubt, S3 has been consulted. S1, which contains the engraver’s markings, was clearly used as the source for publication (S3). However, it is evident that, at proof stage, some additional markings (notably some tempo changes) were added. These additions and other variants have been listed below:

Te Deumb. 1 Original tempo marking in S1 and S2 was ‘Allegro moderato e maestoso’. Tempo marking in S3 was altered to ‘Allegro maestoso’. b. 51 ‘Poco più mosso’ in S2 and S3 only. Metronome mark of minim = 84 in S2 only. b. 105 Metronome marking of crotchet = 120 in S2 and S3; crotchet = 134 in S1. b. 114 ‘Poco meno mosso’ in S2 and S3 only.b. 143 ‘tempo d’Allegro’ in S2 and S3 only. b. 169 ‘più lento’ in S2 and S3 only. b. 208 ‘Più animato’ in S2 and S3 only. Double bar after 208 omitted in S1. b. 231 ‘Più Lento’ in S1. Metronome marking: minim = 50 in S1; crotchet = 76 in S2 and S3.b. 252 ‘Tempo Imo’ in S2 and S3 only.

Omission of accidentals in S3 has been rectifi ed without comment. All editorial dynamics are in square brackets. All editorial slurs, ties and hairpins are bisected by a short vertical line. In accordance with modern editorial practice, all vocal parts include beaming.

PerformanceThe metronome markings and registration instructions are Stanford’s own (or were clearly sanctioned by him for publication), so they may be safely adhered to as authoritative. Stanford included much phrasing for the organ in his original source (S1) which was reproduced in both S2 and S3. Editorial intervention has therefore been kept to a minimum, though suggestions of possible phrasings have been made at bb. 143–4 (Te Deum) in the light of the more specifi c articulation of the brass parts. For the ‘Poco più mosso (Alla marcia)’ section at b. 51 (Te Deum), the organist may wish to create a ‘pizzicato’ eff ect in the pedals. Throughout both the Te Deum and Jubilate Deo the conductor should pay close attention to the tempi (clearly indicated by the metronome markings), especially to the ‘accelerando’ markings (which are often ignored), and to the diff erent expressive styles of the thematic material. A full tone is obviously required for the majestic sections of the Te Deum (such as the opening), but the ‘march’ section should be sung with a more ‘muscular’ conviction, and for the passage from b. 177, the lyrical style demands a more restrained manner which should also allow the organ (which has the melody) to come through the texture at b. 194. Care should be taken, given Stanford’s brisk tempo marking, not to rush the Jubilate, and though the sense of elation should be evident throughout the work (it is very much in the style of a symphonic ‘Scherzo’), the return to C major at b. 63 should be more restrained in tone in accordance with the ‘p’ dynamic both to give sense to the words and to allow some space for the crescendo to ‘f ’ in the approach to the conclusion.
