1. Why is Assessment Important?
Pearson English Learning System9
Pearson English Learning SystemAll Together. Now.

• Provides information on EL students’ English Language acquisition and proficiency levels
• Provides information on students’ academic skill levels
• Gives data that correlates to predicting students’ likelihood for success on high stakes assessments
• Facilitates differentiated instruction.
• Documents instructional efficacy
2. The Current EL & Assessment Disconnect
Pearson English Learning System10
Pearson English Learning SystemAll Together. Now.
• Disconnect between language abilities and performance
• Students placed in ESL programs too long – they miss outon other academic instruction
• Assessed only using tests written in English – thus educators “get a poor picture”
• Schools may not implement both continuous and periodic assessments for ELs to inform instruction
•

Case Study~ Kim
Pearson English Learning System30
When Kim was a sixth-grader, her family moved to the United States from Vietnam. She is currently in the eighth grade. Her primary language is Vietnamese and Kim still struggles with writing, reading, and speaking English.
What would be your first steps to better plan her instruction?
Case Study
• At the beginning of the school year, Kim was given the Stanford ELP 2 (Stanford English Language Proficiency Test).
• With Pearson’s web-based reporting solution, Ready Results, Kim’s teacher, Ms. Megan, was able to get results immediately, which confirmed Kim had an intermediate level of proficiency in writing, reading, and speaking English.
• By quickly obtaining these results and knowing about Kim’s low proficiency level, Ms. Megan was able to immediately begin developing specific instructional interventions.
Pearson English Learning System31
Case Study
• Due to instructional interventions that addressed her language barrier, Kim is now making significant progress in improving her English writing, reading, and speaking capabilities. This support is helping Kim improve in all academic content areas.
