Welcome back SLHS community. Just a few reminders from the library to kick off the new year.

• Please make sure to pay your child's technology fee. This fee helps us purchase new technology for students and allows your child to print throughout the year. If the fee is not paid, your child will not be able to print.

Hopefully everyone had a great summer and was able to read a book or two. SLHS has changed our summer reading expectations. Students were able to read any book they chose (age appropriate). They are hard at work writing book summaries and reviews for the books they read. We are hoping to roll out our new "Gator Reads" website to the community by fall. This website will house reviews from both staff and students on books they have read. We look forward to building a place for staff, students and community to share the books they recommend.

Standley Lake High School has signed with SuperFanHigh, a leading fan loyalty and engagement company, to launch a new mobile app that will allow students, faculty alumni and fans to earn points based on events and activities that they attend and ‘check-in’. Those points can be used to earn prizes and exclusive experiences from Standley Lake High School.

The app provides other information for student and fans including athletic team schedules, school news and an opportunity to share photos through a ‘fan cam.’ There’s a leaderboard to fuel some friendly competition amongst fans. The Social module allows users to stay up to date with all the various social media accounts to know what’s going on at Standley Lake.

Gator Fan Club can be downloaded for free at either the Apple iTunes or Google Play online stores.

ATHLETIC PASS The 2017-2018 High School Student Activity Fee will be $60 and will allow the high school student free admission to any regular season athletic event held at Jeffco facilities, exclusive of any tournaments and invitations. The student ID will indicate whether the student purchased a pass, with either a word or letter designation printed by the photographer. If there is a late registration and the photographer does not have the ability to print the designation on the ID, then an activity sticker will be added to the pass. Students must still anticipate paying an admission fee when attending contests at non-Jeffco facilities. With the regular admission price for students at $4, the pass will pay for itself after the 12th event. If your student likes to attend athletic games, the Athletic Pass is a smart purchase. Please note: If a student allows another student to use his/her pass, then the pass will be confiscated and privileges will be revoked, with no refund granted.

ATTENTION: GRAPHING CALCULATORS REQUIRED FOR ALL SLHS STUDENTS THIS YEAR!

ALL Standley Lake High School math students (Algebra 1 or higher) will be required to have their own GRAPHING CALCLATOR. Students are required to have a Graphing Calculator on the first day of school. Graphing calculators will be used in class and at home on assignments.

Due to the cost of these calculators ($80 - $120), we wanted to make sure you know in plenty of time so you could be looking for back to school sales. Other places to look are on Amazon, eBay, craigslist…etc.

We recommend: TI-83, TI-83Plus, TI-84, TI-84 plus Silver Edition

If you choose to purchase a different model/brand of calculator, your teacher may not be able to show you how to use it, as we use the above models for classroom demonstrations.

Please note that we WILL NOT allow the use of calculator apps on iPods, iPhones and other smart phones in the classrooms.

*We do have a limited number of rental calculators available to students on free/reduced lunch. Our supply is limited and available on a first come-first serve basis. See your teacher for details. The cost of replacing a lost rental is $120.

*Students that are on Free/Reduced Lunch should see the Financial Secretary (Ms. Whitesides) to receive a voucher for a rental calculator prior to the start of school in August.

*Students who are not on Free/Reduce Lunch can rent a calculator from their teacher for $25 if they are available.

Emergency School Closures

Winter weather is just around the corner and the school district would like to remind parents about its emergency school closure procedures for the year. The safety of our students and staff is our greatest concern. When poor weather conditions are expected the district’s emergency weather team goes on alert. • A private weather forecasting service is consulted, as well as the local weather forecasters. • Road conditions are checked through the Colorado Highway Department, the Highway Patrol, county snow plow drivers and the district’s bus drivers. • Principals, teachers and school facility managers provide information about the conditions of their buildings, parking lots and surrounding roads. The district makes every effort to announce school closures before 6 a.m., but sometimes weather conditions change rapidly and a late decision must be made. Once a decision is made, a phone call, e-mail and text message will be sent to Jeffco families via SchoolMessenger. Parents can log on to the SchoolMessenger contact manager at: http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/schoolmessenger/index.html to designate how they would like to be contacted about emergency school closings. The local media is notified regarding school closings and asked to announce the information as soon as possible. The district’s telephone hotline at 303-982-6600, and the school district Web page at http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/closures/index.html are also updated. Should schools need to be closed during the day; every attempt will be made to notify parents. Students will not be transported home without parent notification and contact. Since parents are the primary protectors, they will need to decide what is right for their children. The option to keep children home when weather conditions are extreme is always at the parents' discretion and the school understands and respects the decision. Parents should make advanced plans for school closures and talk to their children about the family plan. For more information about school closures and SchoolMessenger alerts see: http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/closures/index.html.
