WARNINGDo not place your BT Freestyle2500 in the bathroom or otherhumid areas.
Handset rangeThe handset reception range fromthe base is up to 300m outdoorsand up to 50m indoors. Thick stonewalls can severely affect the range.
Signal strengthThe symbol on your handsetscreen indicates when you are inrange. When you are out of range,it flashes and the screen displaysOUT OF RANGE.
IMPORTANTDo not connect the telephone lineuntil at least one of the handsets isfully charged.
The base station must be pluggedinto the mains power at all times.
Location
You need to place your BT Freestyle 2500 within 2metres of a mains power and telephone socket so thatthe cables will reach.
Make sure it is at least 1 metre away from otherelectrical appliances to avoid interference.
Your BT Freestyle 2500 works by sending radio signalsbetween the handset and base. The strength of thesignal depends on where you site the base. Putting it ashigh as possible ensures the best signal.
Setting up
1. Plug the mains power cable into the base.
The green Power/In use light comes on and theanswering machine is switched On.

2. Insert the 2 x AAA NiMH batteries supplied into thehandset. Slide the battery compartment cover into place.
3. Charge the handset for at least 16 hours by placing thehandset on the base. The red Charging light comes on.
The handset is pre-registered to the base as HS 1. This is shown on the display. When the handset is fullycharged the display shows the symbol.
4. After 16 hours, plug the telephone line cord into your BT Freestyle 2500 base and the telephone wall socket.
Set the day and time
Your BT Freestyle 2500 answering machine automaticallyadds the day and time to all messages and memosrecorded. The default setting is Saturday 12:01pm.

The red Charging light stays oneven when the batteries are fullcharged.
Talk/Standby timeUnder ideal conditions, fullycharged handset batteries shouldgive about 10 hours talktime or100 hours standby on a singlecharge.
Battery low warningIf the symbol is flashing, youwill need to recharge your handsetbefore using it.
Battery performanceTo keep your batteries in the bestcondition, leave the handset offthe base for a few hours at a time(after the initial 16 hour charge).New NiMH batteries do not reachfull capacity until they have been innormal use for several days
Running the batteries right downat least once a week will help themlast as long as possible.
The charge capacity ofrechargeable batteries will reducewith time as they wear out, soreducing the talk/standby time ofthe handset. Eventually they willneed to be replaced. New batteriescan be obtained from the BTFreestyle Helpline 0870 240 3962.

1. Press and hold until you hear “Please set day andtime” and the current setting on the message counterflashes.
2. Press or to hear and select the day then pressto confirm.
You can scroll through the settings by holding down thebutton. 1 = Monday, 7 = Sunday.
3. Press or to hear and select the hour then pressto confirm.
4. Press or to hear and select the minute thenpress to confirm.
The day and time setting is announced in full.

Navigating the menus
Your BT Freestyle 2500 handset features an easy touse menu system. Have a look at the menu map on thenext page.
When the handset is switched on and in standby:
1. Press and hold to open the main menu and select the

Make a call
1. Press . The display shows the call timer, e.g. 00:30.
Enter the telephone number and the number is dialled.
Preparatory dialling
1. Enter the number first then press to dial.

There are volume 5 levels to choose from, 1 for lowvolume, 5 for high volume.

Call timerYour handset automaticallydisplays the duration of everyexternal call.
The earpiece volume can only bechanged when you are on a call.

You can redial any of the last 10 numbers called.
1. Press repeatedly to display any of the last 10 numbers dialled.
2. Press to dial the number displayed.
To delete numbers from the redial list
1. When the number you want to delete is displayed, pressand hold until you hear a beep.

2. Press on the base or any button on the handset to stop ringing.
Internal calls
If you purchased the BT Freestyle 2500 Twin, you canmake internal calls between handsets.
1. Press and hold until the display shows HS and INT.Enter the number of the handset you want to call. Theother handset will ring.
2. Press to end the call.
Transferring calls
If using the BT Freestyle 2500 Twin, you can transfer anexternal call to the other handset.
1. During an external call, press and hold until thedisplay shows HS and INT. Enter the number of thehandset you want to call. The other handset will ring.
2. When it answers, press to transfer the call.

Caller DisplayIf you subscribe to Caller Display, you can see yourcaller’s number (provided it is not withheld) on yourhandset display before you answer the call.
If the caller has withheld their number the display shows the handset number (e.g. HS-1).
Using the Calls listWhen a call is not answered or is picked up by theanswering machine, your caller’s telephone number willbe stored in the Calls list. The Calls list holds up to 20missed calls. Missed calls are indicated by the icon inthe display.
When the Calls list is full, the oldest call will be replacedby a new call, the most recent call will always be at thetop of the list. If a caller rings again their number willmove to the top of the list.
Ring Back calls will display the number you dialled torequest the Ring Back service.
Caller Display
IMPORTANTTo use Caller Display you must firstsubscribe to your networkprovider’s Caller Display service. A quarterly fee is payable.

Your BT Freestyle 2500 can digitally record up to 10minutes of messages. Each message can be up to amaximum of 3 minutes long. You can also record memosfor other users of your phone.
You can operate your BT Freestyle 2500 from:

remotely from any external Touchtone™ telephone.

When first connected to the mains, your BT Freestyle2500 is set to ON and Answer and Record.

Volume for playback is adjustable in 7 steps. It isindependent from Call screening but it is linked to thevoice prompt volume.

This means deleting your own recorded outgoing message.

Memory fullIf the memory becomes full when a caller is leaving amessage the machine announces “Memory full, thank youfor calling” and hangs up.
When the memory is full, your answering machine willautomatically switch to Answer Only mode. You mustdelete messages to allow for more messages to berecorded, see page 33.

Answer delayAnswer delay sets the number of times your BT Freestyle2500 will ring before the answering machine picks upyour call. The default setting is 6 rings. You can changethis setting to 2-9 rings or to time saver mode.
At the base:
1. Press and hold until the current setting isannounced (setting flashes), then release.
2. Press to scroll through the settings, which areannounced with each press.
When you hear and see on the message counter thesetting you want, release . The setting is announcedagain as confirmation.

Working with a fax machineIf your BT Freestyle 2500 is connected to a fax machine,make sure your BT Freestyle 2500 is set to answer thecall before your fax machine (the answer delay on BTFreestyle 2500 – 2, 3 or 4 rings is recommended – mustbe less than the answer delay on the fax). You may needto adjust the answer delay setting on both youranswering machine and your fax machine.
The fax machine must be configured to work with ananswering machine (check fax machine user guide). It willdetect a fax call after it has been answered and take thecall off the BT Freestyle 2500.
Audible message alertWhen this feature is switched On, your BT Freestyle2500 will beep regularly to indicate new messages.

Delete all old messages
When the machine is idle, press and hold the red button. The machine announces “All old messagesdeleted, you have (n) new messages” and then beeps.
Call screening
You can listen in while your answering machine takes a call. This lets you identify the caller before decidingwhether to take the call yourself. You can adjust the callscreening speaker volume in idle or during call screeningusing the or buttons. Adjusting the Callscreening volume will not affect the message playbackvolume.
To turn call screening off, set the volume to 0.
When the answering machine takes a call, if you decide totake the call yourself:
1. Press or lift the handset from the base. Recordingstops automatically and you can speak to your caller.

Time saverIf you have set the answer delay toTime Saver, your answeringmachine will answer after 2 rings ifyou have new messages. If you donot have new messages it willanswer after 6 rings. This enablesyou to hang up if you hear morethan 2 rings before you areconnected, saving you the cost of a call. See Answer delay, page 31.
You can operate your answering machine remotely fromany Touchtone™ phone by calling your BT Freestyle 2500and entering a 3-digit security code.
The pre-set code is 321. You can change this for added security.
To change the security code
1. Press and hold . The first digit of your current securitycode is announced and will flash on the message counter.
2. Use or to change the digit then press toconfirm. The new digit is announced.
3. You will be prompted to change digit 2 and 3. Follow theprocedure above for all 3 digits of your security code.
4. The new security code is announced once the change hasbeen completed.
Switch answering machine on
If you forget to switch on your answering machine, youcan do it from another phone.
1. Dial your phone number and after 20 rings youranswering machine will switch on.

2. Enter your 3-digit code. Your machine announces, “You have (n) new messagesand (m) old messages, to hear main menu, press 1”. Press1 to hear a list of the available commands.

Registering new handsets
You can register up to 5 handsets to your BT Freestyle2500 base.
If you have purchased a Twin, Trio or Quad thehandsets in these packs are pre-registered to the main base.
However, if you purchase additional BT Freestyle 2500handsets separately you will need to register them to thebase first for them to work.
Registering a BT Freestyle 2500 handset
1. Press and hold the button on the base for about 10 seconds until the In Use light starts flashing.
2. On the handset to be registered, press and hold the and together until display shows 65-.
3. Enter the base number. If this is a new handset then thebase number is 1, the display shows 65-1 then PIN.
4. Enter and registration starts. When thehandset beeps and returns to standby registration iscomplete.

Registering another GAP compatible handset
1. Press and hold the button on the base for about 10 seconds until the In Use light starts flashing.
2. Set the handset to be registered into registration mode(see user guide for that handset). When it asks for a PIN,enter .
3. When the handset beeps and returns to standbyregistration is complete.
De-registering a handset
You can de-register handsets using only BT Freestyle2500 handsets that are registered to that base (you can’tuse other GAP compatible handset to de-register ahandset).
1. On the BT Freestyle 2500 handset, press and hold theand buttons together until the handset beeps
and displays PIN.
2. Enter . The display shows PIN0000 and HS-.

You cannot link up with the base station
Is the icon shown in the top left hand corner of thedisplay? If so, you may be out of range and need tomove closer to the base.
Check that the mains power cable is connected at thebase and switched on.
Handset does not ring
The ringer volume may be switched off, see page 21.
Check that the base is plugged into the phone socketand mains power and switched on.
Buzzing noise on my radio, TV, computer or hearing aid
Sometimes your BT Freestyle 2500 can interfere withother electrical equipment if it is placed too close. It isrecommended that you place your Freestyle 2500 atleast one metre away from such appliances to avoid anyrisk of interference.

Calls do not get through to a connected fax machine
Check that the number of rings before answering is 2, 3or 4, see Answer delay page 31 and that your outgoingmessage is kept short.
Check that the sending machine is transmitting faxtones. Older machines may not do this.
If you are still having problems, try shortening the silencedetection time on your fax machine/fax modem. See yourfax user guide for details.
Fax machine interrupts callers trying to leavemessages on the answering machine
The fax may be detecting periods of silence during theincoming message and switching to fax reception mode.Try increasing the silence detection time on your faxmachine/fax modem or switch it off completely. See your fax user guide for details.

Only use the power supply included with the product.Using an unauthorised power supply will invalidate yourguarantee and may damage the telephone. The itemnumber for the power supply used with the base is024322.
The item number for the power supply used with thecharger is 009294 (only applicable when you havepurchased the BT Freestyle 2500 Twin, Trio or Quad).
Use only the approved rechargeable batteries supplied.Spare rechargeable batteries are available from the BTFreestyle Helpline on 0870 240 3962.
Do not open the handset (except to replace the handsetbatteries) or the base. This could expose you to highvoltages or other risks. Contact the Helpline for allrepairs.
Radio signal transmitted between the handset and basemay cause interference to hearing aids.
It is recommended that advice from a qualified expert besought before using this product in the vicinity ofemergency/intensive care medical equipment.

It is recommended that if you have a pacemaker fittedyou check with a medical expert before using thisproduct.
Your product may interfere with other electricalequipment, e.g. TV and radio sets, clock/alarms andcomputers if placed too close. It is recommended thatyou place your product at least one metre away fromsuch appliances to minimise any risk of interference.
Never dispose of batteries in a fire. There is a serious riskof explosion and/or the release of highly toxic chemicals.
Cleaning
Clean the handset and base with a damp (not wet) cloth,or an anti-static wipe. Never use household polish as thiswill damage the product. Never use a dry cloth as thismay cause a static shock.
Environmental
Do not expose to direct sunlight.
The product may heat up when the batteries are beingrecharged or during prolonged periods of use. This isnormal. However, we recommend that to avoid damageyou do not place the product on antique/veneered wood.

How many telephones can you have?
All items of telephone equipment have a RingerEquivalence Number (REN), which is used to calculatethe number of items which may be connected to anyother telephone line. Your BT Freestyle 2500 has a RENof 1. A total REN of 4 is allowed. If the total REN of 4 isexceeded, the telephone may not ring.
With different telephone types there is not guarantee ofringing, even when the REN is less than 4.
Only use approved power supply, item code 024322for base station or 009294 for charger (only applicableif you have purchased the BT Freestyle 2500 Twin, Trioor Quad).
Only use approved AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries.

1. When storing a number, press and hold until Pappears in the display.
Recall (R)
is used when connected to certain switchboards/PBXsand some BT Calling Features, or those services availablevia your network provider.
The default recall setting is option S ( 100ms) which isthe standard setting for the Public Telephone Networkand most switchboards/PBXs. Normally, you will notneed to change this setting. However, someswitchboards/PBXs may require a longer recall, in whichcase option L (280ms) should be selected.
