Because the vast majority of our customers desire these basic options, we have grouped them together and added them as standard equipment in the MD Explorer®. The additional equipment consists of the following:
CO-PILOT CONTROLS. This feature duplicates for the co-pilot the pilot’s ability to control the helicopter with cyclic and collective levers, and NOTAR® anti-torque pedals. The unique ability of the pilot to override the FADEC with collective-mounted, throttle-like, rotating controls is also incorporated into the co-pilot controls.
FLY-AWAY AVIONICS PACKAGE. This minimum avionics package is in response to many customers‘ need for pilot transition training at our facility or for the cross-country return to their headquarters of operation. It consists of:
A) Bendix/King KLX-135A GPS/Comm. This is a combination of a Global Positioning System for satellite navigation and a frequency-agile VHF radio for transmitting and receiving voice messages.
B) AMS-43 3-station intercom system
C) A floor-mounted intercom switch on the co-pilot side permit a cockpit passenger to respond to the pilot’s conversation without touching the intercom switch on the co- pilot’s cyclic stick.
D) Bendix/King KT-70 Mode S transponder
HEATER/DEFOGGER. This is a bleed-air addition to the basic airframe which routes a pilot-controlled variable amount of heat to the cockpit windows for de-fogging and to adjustable outlets near the feet of the crew for cold weather comfort. One heater outlet is also located in the rear cabin area.
STANDARD EQUIPMENT

ROTOR BRAKE. Since the engines do not require a cool-down period, and the rotor brake may be applied anywhere below
70% NR after engine shut-down, the rotor blades may be stopped very quickly when this device is installed. This may be required for high wind conditions, or for
additional safety considerations in confined areas. The rotor brake control lever is located above the pilot/co-
pilot’s head, easily reached by both operators in the aft/center of the cockpit. This lever pressurizes an
independent hydraulic master cylinder which, in turn, operates a disc brake on the back side of the
transmission where the NOTAR® drive shaft connects. A yellow BRAKE caution light on the IIDS warns the
crew if the brake is not fully disengaged.
ENGINE WASH KIT. This includes plumbing from two ground service couplings, inside the right hand transmission access door, to nozzles placed above each engine’s inlet screen inside the inlet plenum.
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

ENHANCED VFR PACKAGE. Installed weight = 44.0 lb. (20.0 kg).
As the very name implies, this indivisible package enhances the operator’s ability to operate the helicopter with less than perfect outside visual horizon references. It consists of:
1) Bendix/King KT-70 Mode S transponder.
Provides Air Traffic Control (ATC) positive air craft identification with improved aircraft surveillance and reporting accuracy.
2) Bendix/King KX-165 with KI-206 indicator.
This is an all solid-state design with electronic tuning and digital “flip-flop” frequency displays for both navigation and communication functions. Only two inches high, the KX-165 combines a full 760-channels for communication and 200-channels for navigation, along with a built-in VOR/LOC converter and distance measuring equipment (DME) channeling outputs. A built-in 40-channel glideslope receiver is included. The KI-206 indicator displays the navigation information, and features a rectilinear display with internal lighting.
3) Bendix/King KCS-55A directional gyro and KI525A HSI.
This compass system combines the function of a standard directional gyro and a VOR/LOC/GS course deviation indicator. It displays your complete navigation situation at a glance.
4) United Instrument-7130 Instantaneous Vertical Speed Indicator (IVSI).
This provides the pilot with an extremely sensitive visual depiction of vertical speed, and allows the pilot to more easily maintain a constant altitude.
5) ADI-510 Attitude gyro.
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
