Because the vast majority of our customers desire these basic options, we have grouped them together and added them as standard equipment in the MD Explorer®. The additional equipment consists of the following:

CO-PILOT CONTROLS. This feature duplicates for the co-pilot the pilot’s ability to control the helicopter with cyclic and collective levers, and NOTAR® anti-torque pedals. The unique ability of the pilot to override the FADEC with collective-mounted, throttle-like, rotating controls is also incorporated into the co-pilot controls.

FLY-AWAY AVIONICS PACKAGE. This minimum avionics package is in response to many customers‘ need for pilot transition training at our facility or for the cross-country return to their headquarters of operation. It consists of:

A) Bendix/King KLX-135A GPS/Comm. This is a combination of a Global Positioning System for satellite navigation and a frequency-agile VHF radio for transmitting and receiving voice messages.

B) AMS-43 3-station intercom system

C) A floor-mounted intercom switch on the co-pilot side permit a cockpit passenger to respond to the pilot’s conversation without touching the intercom switch on the co- pilot’s cyclic stick.

D) Bendix/King KT-70 Mode S transponder

HEATER/DEFOGGER. This is a bleed-air addition to the basic airframe which routes a pilot-controlled variable amount of heat to the cockpit windows for de-fogging and to adjustable outlets near the feet of the crew for cold weather comfort. One heater outlet is also located in the rear cabin area.

ROTOR BRAKE. Since the engines do not require a cool-down period, and the rotor brake may be applied anywhere below

70% NR after engine shut-down, the rotor blades may be stopped very quickly when this device is installed. This may be required for high wind conditions, or for

additional safety considerations in confined areas. The rotor brake control lever is located above the pilot/co-

pilot’s head, easily reached by both operators in the aft/center of the cockpit. This lever pressurizes an

independent hydraulic master cylinder which, in turn, operates a disc brake on the back side of the

transmission where the NOTAR® drive shaft connects. A yellow BRAKE caution light on the IIDS warns the

crew if the brake is not fully disengaged.

ENGINE WASH KIT. This includes plumbing from two ground service couplings, inside the right hand transmission access door, to nozzles placed above each engine’s inlet screen inside the inlet plenum.

ENHANCED VFR PACKAGE. Installed weight = 44.0 lb. (20.0 kg).

As the very name implies, this indivisible package enhances the operator’s ability to operate the helicopter with less than perfect outside visual horizon references. It consists of:

1) Bendix/King KT-70 Mode S transponder.

Provides Air Traffic Control (ATC) positive air craft identification with improved aircraft surveillance and reporting accuracy.

2) Bendix/King KX-165 with KI-206 indicator.

This is an all solid-state design with electronic tuning and digital “flip-flop” frequency displays for both navigation and communication functions. Only two inches high, the KX-165 combines a full 760-channels for communication and 200-channels for navigation, along with a built-in VOR/LOC converter and distance measuring equipment (DME) channeling outputs. A built-in 40-channel glideslope receiver is included. The KI-206 indicator displays the navigation information, and features a rectilinear display with internal lighting.

3) Bendix/King KCS-55A directional gyro and KI525A HSI.

This compass system combines the function of a standard directional gyro and a VOR/LOC/GS course deviation indicator. It displays your complete navigation situation at a glance.

4) United Instrument-7130 Instantaneous Vertical Speed Indicator (IVSI).

This provides the pilot with an extremely sensitive visual depiction of vertical speed, and allows the pilot to more easily maintain a constant altitude.

5) ADI-510 Attitude gyro.

BENDIX/KING KRA-405 RADAR ALTIMETER. Installed weight = 10.5 lb. (4.8 kg)

This instrument provides continuous visual indication of the helicopter’s height above the ground, from 2,000 feet to touchdown, with a pilot-selectable decision-height caution annunciator. Selection of this option requires that you first select the Enhanced VFR Package and is included in the MD Explorer IFR package.

RDR-2000 WEATHER RADAR

Installed weight = 27.3 lb. (12.4 kg)

Incorporating an all-new design, this unit provides all of the capabilities and features expected in a traditional two-dimensional digital radar system, but also adds something exclusive - the Vertical

Profile Display™ which provides a “three dimensional” view of the storm cells. A simple

switch allows you to also see how fast a storm is building, or to check the angle of the storm’s

leading edge to see if it is to- ward or away from your position.

HEATED PITOT TUBE Installed weight = 0.3 lb. (0.1 kg)

This option helps to reduce the possibility of inadvertent ice or freezing rain from clogging up the static pitot system which provides airspeed and altitude information. (NOTE: This option is included when single pilot IFR suite is selected.)

DUAL HEATED PITOT TUBES Installed weight = 2.4 lb. (1.1 kg)

Provides an additional source for ram air pressure differential, further reducing the possibility of losing airspeed and altitude information while flying in inadvertent icing conditions.

(NOTE: This option is required when the single-pilot IFR suite with electromechanical or EFIS co-pilot instruments is selected.)

ENGINE PARTICLE SEPARATOR Installed weight = 28.0 lb. (12.7 kg).

.

This is a Donaldson centrifugal-vortex air flow cover for the engines which efficiently traps sand and dust (FOD) which

might otherwise damage the engine compressors. It has been demonstrated to be 95% efficient down to 3 microns

of particulates. A bleed air ejector expels contaminants overboard. In the event one of the covers becomes clogged

with debris, a differential pressure-controlled, solenoid-operated by-pass door automatically opens for each

engine. Above 47 knots, an actuator automatically opens the NACA inlet.

AUXILIARY FUEL TANK (FARGO) 53-gal. installed weight, empty = 104.6 lb. (47.4 kg)

28-gal. installed weight, empty = 70.2 lb. (31.8 kg)

Either tank is installed in the aft baggage compartment, attaching to existing hardware. They are filled from the

outside of the fuselage, and are gravity-fed into the main fuel cell. The pilot has a control cable knob in the cockpit,

and an additional fuel quantity gauge on the instrument panel. Space is still available in the baggage compartment

for a reduced amount of cargo.

SIX PLACE CABIN INTERCOM Installed weight = 3.3 lb. (1.5kg).

Provides outlet jacks (no headsets provided) for all six passengers in the main cabin. When combined with

customer-furnished headsets, the passenger and crew can communicate.

The console-mounted control head permits the crew to use the PA system (200 Watts) themselves, or to re-direct an input from the selected radio frequency, thus allowing a commander on the ground to use the orbiting helicopter as an elevated speaker platform. A selector switch also allows the system to put out a yelp or wailing siren.

FLIR 8500 (FORWARD-LOOKING INFRARED). Installed weight = 85.0 lb. (38.6 kg) This compact, stabilized, thermal imaging system provides modular, interchangeable payloads in a stabilized turret, with combinations of thermal imaging and day TV sensors. It provides two fields of view: a 25° wide-angle view that is ideal for navigation and area searches, and a narrow telescopic view for identifying more distant objects. The display tube will fit in the left-hand side of the optional “T” panel. The imager may be fixed or controlled by a hand control unit.

RETRACTABLE SEARCH/LANDING LIGHT. Installed weight = 8.0 lb. (3.6 kg) Supplements the “standard” fixed hover and approach landing lights. Also has azimuth capability, with pilot control switches on the collective pitch lever. An IR lens or dual function IR/white light are also available.

SX-5 SEARCHLIGHT. Installed weight = 31.3 lb. (14.2 kg) This small, but powerful, searchlight has a typical range of 1,650 feet (500 m.), and has a beam intensity of 15 million candlepower. A “joy stick” in the cockpit allows the crew two axis of movement. There is no recycle time required between start-ups.

SX-16 SEARCHLIGHT. Installed weight = 65.0 lb. (29.5 kg) This light has a beam intensity of 30 million candlepower. A remote control focus allows the crew to vary the beam width from 4-20°, with a typical useful range for target identification of one mile. An optional in-flight changeover infrared filter for covert surveillance is available.

PERSONNEL HOIST, 600-LB. CAPACITY (GOODRICH)

Installed weight 171.0 lb. (77.6 kg)

The rescue hoist system provides a means for lowering and raising personnel or cargo to or from the hovering helicopter. It may be operated by a qualified crewmember in the cabin or by the pilot. The drum holds 245 feet of 3/16 inch spin-resistant cable, and incorporates a fail-safe load brake. Hoist speed control is selectable between 100 and 225 feet per minute.

PERSONNEL HOIST PROVISIONS (ONLY). Installed weight = 34.1 lb. (15.4 kg)

All of the hard points and electrical connectors, less the support arm, motor and reel. This is an option to allow several aircraft to be equipped with the provisions, but only have one actual hoist for use when needed.

WIRE STRIKE PROTECTION KIT (BRISTOL AEROSPACE) Installed weight = 21.0 lb. (9.5 kg)

Designed to provide an increased measure of protection for the helicopter’s frontal area in the event of inadvertent flight into horizontally strung wires. Includes a windshield deflector, and an upper and lower cutter/deflector. Each cutter has a high tensile steel cutting blade that can be easily replaced.
