    HOWARD HIGH SCHOOL CTAE CAREER PATHWAYS 2012-2013

    Average salary information and education levels needed for occupations listed below were obtained from the Georgia Department of Labor.

    WHY TAKE CTAE COURSES? CTAE courses will get you on the fast track to your future. Whatever your plans may be after high school, CTAE courses and career pathways will give you a head start in many technical and professional careers. Our goal is for you to be a success whether you choose to go into the workforce, enlist in the military, go to a technical college, or enter a college or university. Within each Program Concentration listed below you will find career pathways for you to choose. Each career pathway has three to four classes you must take to complete the requirements for your pathway.

    GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS PATHWAY COURSES 48.5610 Introduction to Graphics Design Prerequisite: Computer Applications The goal of this course is to provide all students with an introduction to the principles of graphic communications and design and its place in the world. Students will learn the theories behind creating aesthetically pleasing designs and how to work with consumers. Graphic Communications includes the technologies of printing, publishing, packaging, electronic imaging, and their allied industries; they are often referred to as the graphic arts, print, or imaging industries. Digital photography is also included.

    48.5620 Graphic Design and Production Prerequisite: Introduction to Graphics Design This course focuses on the procedures commonly used in the graphic communication and design industries. Students will gain experience in creative problem solving and the practical implementation of those solutions across multiple areas of graphic communications.

    48.5690 Graphic Output Processes Prerequisite: Graphic Design and Production Students learn to manage the graphic communications output and completion process including customer relations management, printing, finishing, and binding. Students accumulate work samples that will constitute their personal portfolio.

    SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY COURSES 06.4160 Business Essentials Prerequisite: Computer Applications The course will help students develop management skills as they study forms of business ownership, functions of management, budgeting and finance, technology, communications, legislation, leadership and teamwork, marketing, and economics. Mastery of these standards through project-based learning and leadership development activities of FBLA will help prepare students with a competitive edge for the global marketplace.

    06.4150 Legal Environment of Business Prerequisite: Business Essentials Legal Environment of Business helps students understand situations that show how business and personal law impact not only business, but the lives of people. Business Law will help students achieve an understanding of legal principles that will be used throughout life.

    06.4170 Entrepreneurial Ventures Prerequisite: Business Essentials Students will study management strategies for developing and implementing business plans; structuring the organization; financing the organization; and managing information, operations, marketing and human resources. International business principles are infused in the standards for Entrepreneurial Ventures.

    07.4110 Principles of Accounting I (suggested elective) Prerequisite: Business Essentials Students analyze business transactions and financial statements, perform payroll, examine the global perspective of accounting, and evaluate the effects of transactions on the economic health of a business.

    INTERACTIVE MEDIA PATHWAY COURSES 11.4130 Computing in the Modern World Prerequisite: Computer Applications The goal of this course is to provide all students with an introduction to the principles of computer science and its place in the modern world. This course should also help students to use computers effectively in their lives, thus providing a foundation for successfully integrating their own interests and careers with the resources of a technological society.

    11.4310 Fundamentals of Web Design Prerequisite: Computing in the Modern World Students will learn to write code manually and use graphical authoring tools. Students will also learn to work with web page layout and graphical elements, including images, hyperlinks, tables, forms, and frames.

    11.4320 Advanced Web Design Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Web Design Upon completion of this course, students should have a thorough knowledge of all areas of web page design. Topics include the web development process, advanced layout and design features, advanced study of scripting languages, site development with HTML editors, and web servers and databases.

    COMPUTING PATHWAY COURSES 11.4130 Computing in the Modern World Prerequisite: Computer Applications The goal of this course is to provide all students with an introduction to the principles of computer science and its place in the modern world. This course should also help students to use computers effectively in their lives, thus providing a foundation for successfully integrating their own interests and careers with the resources of a technological society.

    11.4180 Beginning Programming Prerequisite: Computing in the Modern World The major goal of this course is for students to develop the computer science skills of algorithm development, problem solving, and programming. At least a B average in math classes is required to enroll.

    11.4210 Intermediate Programming Prerequisite: Beginning Programming The goal of this course is to deepen students understanding of computing. Students will learn key concepts of software engineering, graphical user interface, and user interface design.

    FINANCIAL MANAGEMENTACCOUNTING PATHWAY COURSES 06.4160 Business Essentials Prerequisite: Computer Applications The course will help students develop management skills as they study forms of business ownership, functions of management, budgeting and finance, technology, communications, legislation, leadership and teamwork, marketing, and economics.     07.4120 Principles of Accounting II Prerequisite: Principles of Accounting I Uncollectible accounts, plant assets, inventory, notes payable and receivable, prepared and accrued expenses, and unearned and accrued revenues are analyzed. Students apply accounting procedures to the formation, dissolution, and liquidation of business entities and to managerial accounting.

    EDUCATION & TEACHING PATHWAY COURSES 13.0110 Examining the Teaching Profession Prerequisite: Computer Applications Students will study, apply, and practice the use of current technologies, effective teaching and learning strategies, the creation of an effective learning environment, the creation of instructional opportunities for diverse learners and students with special needs. Students will also plan instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, community, and curriculum performance standards.

    13.0120 Contemporary Issues in Education Prerequisite: Examining the Teaching Profession The candidate will investigate issues influencing the social and political contexts of educational settings in Georgia and the United States and actively examine the teaching profession from multiple vantage points both within and outside of the school.

    13.5210 Teaching as a Profession Internship Prerequisite: Contemporary Issues in Education A field experience under the direct supervision of a certified teacher (mentor teacher). The internship stresses observing, analyzing, and classifying activities of the mentor teacher and comparing personal traits with those of successful teachers. The interns will develop portfolios of their skills and plan and teach a lesson or lessons.

    MARKETING AND MANAGEMENT CAREER PATHWAY COURSES 08.4740 Marketing Principles Prerequisite: Computer Applications Students will develop skills in applying economic concepts to marketing, distribution and logistics, marketing information management, finance in marketing, product/service planning, pricing mixes, promotional strategies, and personal selling.

    08.4750 Advanced Marketing Prerequisite: Marketing Principles Students assume a managerial perspective in applying economic principles in marketing, analyzing operations needs, examining distribution and financial alternatives, managing marketing information, pricing products and services, developing product/service planning strategies, promoting products and services, purchasing, and professional sales.

    08.4360 Entrepreneurship: Building a Business Prerequisite: Marketing Principles Students will study management strategies for developing and implementing business plans; structuring the organization; financing the organization; and managing information, operations, marketing and human resources.

    CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION ELECTIVES Work Based Learning see Work Based Learning Coordinator to apply.

    Work based learning students have the opportunity to see how skills they are learning in their selected pathway are applied by professionals working in their field of interest and develop their own career-related skills as they become active participants in a business or industry setting. Work-based learning activities are designed for enrichment and application of in-school student learning and are, therefore, not included in the career pathway course sequence.

    Youth Apprenticeship Program (Electrician, Aircraft Structural, etc.) grades 11 and 12 see counselor to apply. Youth Apprenticeship offers juniors and seniors school-based and work-based learning opportunities that are related to the students career interest area. Students earn while they learn by working in their career interest area with a mentor during their fourth block class period.

    CTI must have permission of the Coordinated Technical Instruction Coordinator.

    1. There are Business and Computer Science programs offered in our district that our

    seventh grade students have not been made aware of. All middle school students will

    be informed of the Business and Computer Science pathways that are offered in the

    district and the feeder high schools through Career Development courses or Advisement

    in all seven middle schools. The CTAE Department will provide copies of the Career

    Connections (Pathway) booklets and other promotional materials to the middle schools.

    2. Our district's middle school students have basic knowledge of internet usage and

    utilization of Microsoft Office products. Each middle school Business and Computer

    Science lab will be upgraded to Microsoft Office 2007. CTAE administrators will work

    with the middle school counselors to provide opportunities for all students to take at

    least one Business and Computer Science class while in middle school.

    INTRODUCTION The future of our county and workforce depends on high-quality education; therefore, it is imperative we have effective communication between schools, businesses and the community. The aforementioned ensures we are bridging the gaps and preparing Bibb County School District students for the emerging workforce or post-secondary pathways. The purpose of this survey was to collect and analyze data from local businesses. The results will provide us with information to ensure we are meeting the needs of industry through our Business and Computer Science programs. This report is a review of data collected from a 10-question survey taken by 127 local industry personnel.

    IMPLICATIONS

    Currently, education is going through a major transformation in the 21st century and along with it Career, Technical and Agricultural Education will flourish as an educational platform to ensure that all students are College and Career ready after high school graduation. This Industry Assessment Survey revealed the following implications:

    1. Software in all Business and Computer Science (BCS) labs will be upgraded to Office 2010 this school year.

    2. Business and Computer Science (BCS) instructors will participate in the GeorgiaBEST (Business Ethics Student Training) pilot program this school year to hone our students soft skills.

    3. Business and Computer Science (BCS) instructors will implement the Microsoft IT Academy program this school year. The program will create stackable information technology credentials for all BSC students.
