foundation sessions

These are covered at the start of the programme and are required by most students irrespective of the course chosen. The sessions include: Data Analysis; Research Methods; and Process Mapping.

programme core modules

You must choose at least three from this list. Some courses require specific core modules to be taken.

Financial analysis and Control systems

This core module is the first of two finance modules. It provides an understanding of the main accounting statements together with an awareness of basic accounting principles, terminology and techniques, so that you can interpret financial reports and financial information.

global business*

Even the most technically efficient businesses will fail if they are unaware of what is happening around them. The aim of this module is to give students the tools to understand how international markets affect product prices, costs of materials, components and services, what and where to invest. This background understanding of how markets work will help you to relate other modules to the achievement of business success.

logistics and operations management

Logistics is recognised as a key function in meeting market requirements quickly, flexibly and without incurring punitive inventory costs. This must involve the management of external companies supplying materials or services to the company as well as the management of operations within the company. This module will provide you with an introduction to the fundamentals of logistics and operations management.

organisations, People and Performance

This module is intended to provide a knowledge and understanding of the importance of strategic management of the people in organisations and how this relates to the wider business strategy. It is based on the premise that people are the most important resource in the organisation and translate other resources into added value. It explores all elements of successful and effective people management practice.

Project Planning, management and Control

This module provides an understanding of the principles, philosophies and methods of project management. It establishes an appreciation of, and an ability to apply, current tools and techniques for project planning and control, including the selection and management of project teams.

strategic marketing

Uncertainty and competition have increased significantly and effective marketing is essential for survival and prosperity. Everyone in the organisation contributes to marketing and this module introduces the marketing concept as a philosophy of business management and considers the techniques and strategies available to the marketing practitioner.

Course specific modules are described in detail on pages 10 to 26.

elective modules

You can choose up to three (to make a minimum of nine modules in total) from this extensive list depending on the modules chosen for your degree course. There is also the opportunity to take more electives if places are available and your tutor supports you in doing so. Further electives taken on this basis are not credited towards your degree but can widen your learning or allow you to find out more about a subject that interests you. Please see our website for more information on each of these modules (note: this is just a selection of available modules).

You can join the Diploma with a minimum of 5.0 IELTS (or equivalent) and a slightly lower academic score (equivalent to UK 2nd class honours degree minus one year) and/or have graduated from degree courses that are not normally accepted for direct entry to WMG masters programmes.

The course will be taught over three terms, starting in October. It will confer 120 credits which will be distributed evenly between English Language, Engineering Management and a written project jointly supervised by the Centre for English Language Teacher Education and WMG. In the first two terms you will complete six modules taught by WMG. The English and Study Skills input will be woven around these activities. The jointly supervised written project will be completed in term three, together with the final MSc-level module. You must pass all modules and the project to complete the diploma.

context of a business

The aim of the module is to widen your appreciation as to how each area of a manufacturing business may provide routes to competitive advantage. In particular, the ways in which different areas of the business may combine to provide this advantage are highlighted.

corporate management

This module provides an overview of the main strategic planning and corporate management issues facing the modern business.

IfyouwouldliketostudyforawmGmastersdegreebuthavenotachievedtheenglishlanguageandotherentryrequirementsnormallyrequiredwecanofferthisnewdiplomatoprecedeourmasterscourses.

english language and study skills for engineering management

The aims of this module are to increase your level of proficiency in the use of English for academic purposes, and to the level deemed sufficient for successful graduate studies within the academic context of WMG, where you will go on to complete a postgraduate degree. The module consists of three major elements: Listening and Speaking, Text-based Studies and Study Skills.

project planning, management and control

This module is intended to provide an appreciation of the value of effective project management; to illustrate the techniques in current use; and to show the relevance of project management.

Quality management

This module is designed to emphasise the importance of management style and individuals’ attitudes to quality and reliability, and it presents the techniques that are available to management in pursuit of quality and reliability.

strategic marketing

Uncertainty and competition have increased significantly and effective marketing is essential for survival and prosperity. Everyone in the organisation contributes to marketing and this module introduces the marketing concept as a philosophy of business management and considers the techniques and strategies available to the marketing practitioner.

systems approach to operations design

To survive in a fiercely competitive and global environment, organisations have to undertake a rigorous analysis of their current and required levels of performance. This is a vital first step before redesigning the business to create a unique and viable company that meets customer needs.

teamwork and communications

This module examines communication processes within an organisation and the barriers to successful communication. It will guide you in selecting the most appropriate style of communication to suit particular circumstances.

assessment

In order to be accepted on to our MSc programmes for the following academic year, you must achieve the equivalent of 6.5 IELTS in the English element and an average mark of 50% on the other elements of the course on graduation from the Diploma.

business strategy and strategic management

The increasingly dynamic and complex global business environment in which most organisations operate requires managers who are more aware of the impact of strategic decision-making on their business. The purpose of this module is to introduce the main features of strategic thinking and the strategic management process, particularly the strategy formulation process.

design for the environment

The module aims to train a new generation of product designers and managers who will play a major role in the move towards sustainable development. Product managers need to integrate the needs of the customer with those of the environment to ensure that the society can reach a more balanced trade-off between economy and environment.

fundamentals of process engineering

This module introduces a range of fundamental operations used by process engineers, who perform chemical reactions on a large scale and separate the raw products into finished materials suitable for the market place. The module will cover processing options for handling and separating combinations of gases, solids and liquids. It aims to develop process engineering skills which will enable you to select the appropriate methods to make the required end product.

industrial processes

The module aims to give a broad view of current chemical and biotechnical processes operated across the world. It considers the main types of process and the chemical and biotechnical principles on which these processes are founded. It further covers the external features that affect the operation of these industries in modern environments.
