The Stan Cassidy Centre – Lighting Up Lives for 60 Years
Since 1957 the Stan Cassidy Centre – known and recognized across North America1 – has been there for
our patients, consistently achieving outstanding outcomes. We make it possible for people with the most
complex neurological injuries and diseases to return to their families, jobs and schools. Once they’re back
in their own communities, our therapeutic teams are there, delivering ongoing, essential support through
outpatient appointments, provincial outreach and modern tele-rehabilitation services – all across New
Brunswick.
We need your help to keep the light shining: Our Annual Campaign Goal is $500,000
Stan Cassidy Foundation donors have also been there – right beside us, every step of the way –
honouring Stan’s vision that no matter what the challenges, all human beings have the right to live with
dignity and to be productive, contributing members of society. Your generosity will light up lives in
three ways:
1. Supporting our patients and their families right where they live
2. Helping our clinical experts advance research and education
3. Acquiring new, much-needed special equipment for the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation
“We give to the Stan Cassidy Foundation because the Stan Cassidy Centre is a place of miracles…a place where
hope flourishes and dreams come true. During our many years volunteering at the Centre, we weren’t part of the
patients’ healthcare teams, nor were we privy to diagnoses or other medical details. But we could sure sense the
feeling of restored hope all around us; we could see the joy of achievement shining in young and not-so-young
eyes; there’s a positive mood that just permeates the atmosphere – no matter where you go. Stan Cassidy’s
vision – that all people could be productive members of society – is alive and well at the Centre named
in his honour. It’s important to us that Stan’s legacy continues to thrive and grow.”

1 A recent study re-affirmed the Stan Cassidy Centre’s record of success. 90% of the Centre’s spinal cord injury in-patients were sent
home when discharged from the Centre – to the families and communities they know and love – well above the national average of
70% (Research study conducted by the Spinal Cord Injury Mobilization Network – a network of seven rehabilitation hospitals across
Canada, led and funded by the Rick Hansen Institute and the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation.)

There are so many ways you can light up the lives of our patients and families:
Making everything possible – GENERAL FUND – $200,000
Supporting our General Fund makes all of our
charitable programs and projects possible because
it finances all Foundation operations. It ensures
we can leverage opportunities that arise on short
notice and develop new, emerging programs as
needed. The General Fund underpins everything
we do at the Stan Cassidy Foundation.
Raised to date = $65,040
REMAINING TO BE RAISED = $134,960 (as at Dec. 12, 2017)
“Without the Stan Cassidy Foundation, we would have incurred significant additional debt and our sky-high stress
levels would have escalated. The Foundation definitely fulfills its promise to help people overcome obstacles
in very challenging and changing circumstances. It’s a wonderful thing.”

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS – $117,000 TOTAL
People living with disabilities have significant out-of-pocket expenses directly related to their condition.
Even robust private insurance plans and other financial resources can become exhausted by the overwhelming
costs of long-term rehabilitation. When an insurance co-pay on only one of the many needed items is 20% of
$25,000, $70,000 or more, it doesn’t take long to add up to more than anyone could imagine or anticipate.
New Brunswick also has one of the highest poverty rates in Canada.
More than 1 in 5 children in Saint John and Moncton live in low-income households.
Throughout the province, almost one quarter (22.5%) of children and 16.5% of adults may be going to school
or work hungry, braving the weather without warm clothing, or unable to afford gas or bus fare.2
Imagine how much more of a struggle poverty presents for families living with muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy
or spina bifida, or those recovering from a complex stroke, brain or spinal cord injury.
So many things that Stan Cassidy patients need are not covered by insurance or government – like replacement
batteries for wheelchairs or hearing aids, rehabilitation equipment,
or accessible transportation.3
In many cases, easing just one financial burden gives our patients or families
the help and hope they need to keep going.

Care + Comfort
PATIENT & FAMILY RESOURCE FUND – $50,000
Each year, your generosity makes it possible for us to disburse
hundreds of small cash grants (such as financial assistance for family
travel to and from the Stan Cassidy Centre) and essential items valued
at $10 -$300 (like cupholders that work on wheelchairs, adapted
lifejackets, universal remotes or mobility equipment modifications, to
name just a few).
Raised to date = $135
REMAINING TO BE RAISED = $49,965
(as at Dec. 12, 2017)
Fitness, fun and freedom
BIKES ‘N’ TRIKES – $50,000
This is one of only two programs in Canada that provides specially-
adapted bikes and trikes to patients whose treatment plans call for bike
riding as an integral part of their therapy – improving outcomes like
cardiovascular health, development of anti-gravity muscles and head
and trunk control.
Raised to date = $19,775
REMAINING TO BE RAISED = $30,225
(as at Dec. 12, 2017)
“As a pediatric physiotherapist, I can attest that bike riding is life-changing for my patients. Yes, there’s
absolutely no question that riding improves numerous physical and cognitive issues. But there’s also no question
that when these patients first lay eyes on their very own bike or trike – made just for them – it’s one of
the greatest, most memorable days of their lives.”

Maximizing Mobility
EQUIPMENT RECYCLING PROGRAM – $15,000
Donations of gently-used mobility equipment are cleaned,
appraised, receipted, stored and then granted to Stan Cassidy
Centre patients, the Stan Cassidy Centre or our charitable health
partners. This is an extremely cost-efficient program – the
goods themselves are donated; volunteers do the cleaning and
medical supply companies provide pro bono appraisal services.

Joy through Community Spirit
ANNUAL IN-PATIENT CHRISTMAS PARTY – $2,000
Each year for 60 years, the Stan Cassidy Foundation has partnered
with the Epsilon Ys Men and Ys Menettes, Stan Cassidy Centre staff
and other community-minded individuals to throw a Christmas party
for our inpatients. Your donation helps buy a gift for every patient
plus wrapping, decorations and party equipment rentals. In true
testament to community spirit, all party entertainment and a beautiful
buffet are provided at no charge to the Foundation.

Advancing Excellence – RESEARCH & EDUCATION – $22,000
World-class research propels healthcare to the next
frontier, fostering faster, more accurate diagnoses,
more effective, humane treatments and ultimately,
new and long hoped-for cures. World-class education
keeps Stan Cassidy clinicians at the forefront of their
profession and elevates the standard of care
throughout the Maritimes.

“Like other New Brunswick businesses, we’re familiar with the Stan Cassidy Centre’s reputation for
clinical excellence and its reach across the Maritimes. When we were searching for a charity of choice,
we wanted to align with an organization that was not only recognized for excellence, but had provincial scope;
the Stan Cassidy Foundation was a natural fit. Each year, our Board of Directors is excited to hear about the
Foundation’s efforts and witness the impact of our support. A portion of our financial support – along with
our expertise – helped to launch and now sustains the Cassidy’s Kids school program. The educators who
are our customers know that working together to develop empathy in our young people,
expose them to career options and introduce them to new technology
is helping to create a better tomorrow.”

EQUIPMENT – $73,000 TOTAL
State-of-the-Art Diagnostics for Leading-edge Care
ULTRASOUND MACHINE – $48,000
Likely best known for its cosmetic ability to smooth deep
wrinkles, Botulinum toxin – more commonly known as
Botox™ – injections were originally developed to control
muscle spasticity and rigidity in patients with spinal cord or
brain injury or disease. For the past several years, ultrasound
technology has been the standard of care to precisely
pinpoint and document injection sites. Ultrasound delivers
the best healthcare outcomes and the best research data for
improving care. Medical facilities housing the latest ultrasound technology not only attract young
medical residents seeking residency programs, but also practicing medical specialists who are
considering relocating to Fredericton.
In spite of repeated requests to our provincial government for funding, The Stan Cassidy Centre currently
has no ultrasound machine. Our patients can’t wait any longer.

(as at Dec. 12, 2017)
“Master of My Own Domain”
HOME SWEET SMART HOME – $25,000
Many Stan Cassidy Centre outpatients must rely on a
caregiver to perform even the most basic daily tasks
that most of us take for granted – like changing the
television channel or adjusting the thermostat. When a
person is able to control their environment, particularly
in their own home, they experience increased
independence and motivation, which understandably
has a positive effect on their overall mental
health. We’re seeking your support to establish a Smart
Home Suite at the Stan Cassidy Centre, to serve as an
assessment and demonstration unit. This will empower Atlantic Canada’s premier assistive technology
therapy experts to assess individual patients’ needs and abilities, then write a prescription for consumer-
priced technology solutions.

I am so proud to be a volunteer with the Stan Cassidy Foundation team.
We really started something with our large, hand-made raffle quilt! From the vivid, bright quilts we made
for the Centre’s teen program, to numerous small pieces I’ve crafted for fundraisers, to being part of the envelope
stuffing brigade – what we do matters! Not only do we save the Foundation money through our efforts—which they
use for other important purposes – we make the day a little brighter for the patients at the Centre.

Member, Fredericton Quilters’ Guild
In the most recently-ended fiscal year, the Stan Cassidy Centre recorded over:
29,000 adult patient attendances,
nearly 18,000 paediatric attendances and
over 1,000 assistive technology attendances.
Attendances include instances when a patient is seen in person at the rehabilitation centre,
as well as outreach work to see patients and families in their home communities, and
expert advice to local clinicians throughout the Centre’s catchment
– raising the standard of rehabilitation care across the region.
