Kolkata during Saigal's time, but is currently centred in Mumbai. KL Saigal came to Simla in 1928 from
Jammu. He had enthralling voice and a deep interest in singing. It was National ADC (Amateur
Dramatic Club), Phagli, Simla which provided Saigal the chance opportunity to perform in a play ‘Puran
Bakht’. This was a long play of six hour duration with two intervals. Its lead role actor and singer fell ill
suddenly with diarrhea. The management went into panic till someone suggested the name of young
Saigal who was having good voice. Since Saigal was a regular visitor to watch the play every night and
every show he knew the lines and the songs of the play by heart. He was an instant hit with the
audience and the play was a huge success. While performing on the stage of Gaiety Theatre he was
noticed by Harishchandra Bali, the classic music wizard. Saigal was taken to Calcutta by him and
introduced with RC Boral, the father of film music. There he was hired by BR Sircar’s studio ‘New
Theatre’ for singing. Saigal's unique voice quality which was a mixture of baritone and soft tenor was
the benchmark for most of the singers who followed him. In fact it remains the gold standard even
today shining through very early and practically primitive recording technology.

KANGRA PAINTINGKangra painting is the pictorial art of Kangra, named after Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, a former
princely state, which patronized the art. It became prevalent with the fading of Basohli school of
painting in mid-18th century, and soon produced such a magnitude in paintings both in content as
well as volume, that the Pahari painting school, came to be known as Kangra paintings. The focal
theme of Kangra painting is Shringar (the erotic sentiment). The subjects are seen in Kangra painting
exhibit the taste and the traits of the lifestyle of the society of that period. Bhakti cult was the driving
force and the love story of Radha and Krishna was the main source of spiritual experience, which was
also the base for the visual expression. Bhagavata Purana and the love poems Gita Govinda by
Jayadeva were the most popular subjects dealing with the legends and the amorous plays of Radha
and Krishna symbolizing the soul’s devotion to God.

GAIETY THEATREGaiety Theatre or Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex is a significant tourist hot spot of Shimla. It is
located on The Ridge, Shimla. It is the hub of cultural events of the state. It is also very popular among
Bollywood as many music videos and movies are often filmed here, including one for the 2019 song
"Pachtaoge" by Arijit Singh. Gaiety Theatre was opened on 30th May 1887, this historic cultural center
was designed by the renowned English architect Henry Irwin. The building's exquisite Gothic style of
architecture is a true manifestation of Victorian artistry. It was once part of the large Town Hall
Complex. It had a capacity of more than 300 people. Initially, it was a five-story building with a theatre,
ballroom, armoury, police office, bar, and galleries. After nearly two decades from its date of
establishment, it was found that the building was structurally unsafe. It was partially demolished,
but the Gaiety Theatre remains untouched. With a rich history to its credit, the theatre was the center
for entertainment and socialization, where Viceroy Lord Lytton wrote and staged a play called
Walpole, and Rudyard Kipling acted in 'a scrap of paper'. Legends like Baden Powell, K.L. Sehgal,
Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Balraj Sahni, Pran, Shahi Kapoor, Tom Allter, Manohar Singh, Jennifer Kendall,
Anupam Kher, Naseeruddin Shah, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Mohit Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal
and others have also performed here.

FIRST GORKHA RIFLESFIRST GORKHA RIFLES - 1st Gorkha Rifles, often referred to as the 1
GR in abbreviation, is the senior most Gorkha infantry regiment of the
Indian Army. It was originally formed as part of the East India
Company's Bengal Army in 1815, later adopting the title of the 1st
King George V's Own Gurkha Rifles, however, in 1947, following the
partition of India, it was transferred to the Indian Army and in 1950
when India became a Republic, it was redesignated as 1st Gorkha
Rifles (The Malaun Regiment). The Regiment was located near
Dharamsala when the 1905 Kangra earthquake struck on 4 April,
killing about 20,000 people. The 1st Gurkhas themselves suffered
over 60 fatalities. Since the independence of India in 1947, as per the terms of the Britain–India–Nepal
Tripartite Agreement, six Gorkha regiments, formerly part of the British Indian Army, became part of
the Indian Army and have served ever since. The troops are mainly from thnic Gorkha community of
Nepal. They have a history of courage in battle, evident from the gallantry awards won by Gorkha
soldiers and battle honours awarded to Gorkha both before and after joining the Indian Army. They
carry their signature, a Kukri knife with them.
