2 7 7Dear Collectors,This Stamp Bulletin starts with a roar, the roar of motorcycle grand prix racing. In the 15 years since international grand prix motorcycle racing came to Australia the fi ve riders who feature on our stamps – Mick Doohan, Wayne Gardner, Troy Bayliss, Daryl Beattie and Garry McCoy – have made their mark in grand prix racing in Australia and internationally. Between them they have more than 80 grand prix wins!

Less dramatic but equally exciting is our Christmas 2004 issue. The symbols and characters of the Nativity are at the heart of the designs. These classic images are surrounded by designs reminiscent of Christmas decorations, making this issue shine with the joy of the holiday season.

Over the years, collectors have asked for Christmas cards to match our Christmas stamp issue. New this year is a boxed set of 12 cards with pre-paid envelopes in a complementary design. There are three designs in each box of 12 cards, one design for each stamp in the issue (four cards of each design). As well as being a beautiful way to wish your friends and loved ones a happy holiday season, these cards are convenient and fantastic value at just $12.95 for the set of 12 cards and pre-paid envelopes!

I can’t believe that a year has passed since I wrote to you about annual collections. This year’s collections present a glorious look at the year through the unique perspective of Australian or Australian Territory stamps. A gift of an annual collection is a terrifi c way to say “I care”, “Thank you”, “Merry Christmas” or “Happy New Year”!

For anyone on your list who “has everything”, the 2004 Collection of Australian Stamps includes the Gold Medallists stamp sheetlet, available exclusively in the 2004 Collection of Australian Stamps.

The children on my shopping list will be receiving Disney•Pixar Souvenir Albums, the Mickey Mouse 75 Years of Fun souvenir stamp pack (featured in Bulletin 276) and the Mickey Mouse print collection.

As the year and this letter come to a close, I would like to wish all our readers a happy and safe holiday season. Thank you for your continued support throughout 2004. I look forward to sharing our 2005 issues with you in the new year.

Until next time,

Amber McDougall, Manager, Philatelic Group

AUSTRALIAN HEROES OF GRAND PRIX RACING

12 October 2004

First day covers (gummed, self-adhesive)

International grand prix motorcycle racing came to Australia in 1989, when the revamped Phillip Island circuit in Victoria fi rst hosted a round of the FIM Road Racing World Championship. Australian great Wayne Gardner scored an emotional victory at his home GP and repeated the feat again a year later. From 1991–96 the Australian round of the world championship was held at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway, but returned to Phillip Island in 1997.

The designs and designerThe designer, Symone Lambert of Australia Post’s design studio, uses images of fi ve motorcycle riders who have made their mark in grand prix racing in Australia and internationally to portray the excitement of grand prix motorcycle racing in this special issue of fi ve stamps. The stamps show the riders in action on the track. The backgrounds of the photographs have been reworked to suggest speed. Symone Lambert’s previous stamp designs include Australian Legends – Medical Scientists (2002) and Romance (2003).

From left to right, top to bottom, the stamps in the strip illustrated above are: Mick Doohan; Wayne Gardner; Troy Bayliss; Daryl Beattie and Garry McCoy.

Mick Doohan (b.1965, Brisbane, Queensland) is one of the sport’s all-time legends. He won 54 Grands Prix in a decade of racing, including fi ve consecutive 500cc world titles for Honda from 1994-98. Doohan holds the record for the most Grand Prix wins in a season – twelve in 1997. Doohan retired from racing in 1999, although he continues his involvement in the sport as General Manager of Racing for Honda.

Maximum cards (set of fi ve)

Wayne Gardner (b. 1959, Wollongong, New South Wales) is the only other Australian to win a 500cc Grand Prix world title which he won in 1987, also with Honda. Dubbed the ‘Wollongong Whiz’, Gardner won eighteen GPs from 1986-92 and is credited with creating the sport’s enormous popularity in Australia.

Troy Bayliss (b.1969, Taree, New South Wales) made his name in superbike racing with the legendary Italian marque Ducati, winning the British Superbike Championship in 1999 and becoming world superbike champion in 2001. In 2002 he became the fi rst rider in world superbike history to win the fi rst six races of the season, but narrowly missed his second title. Bayliss made his MotoGP debut with Ducati in 2003, scored three podiums and fi nished sixth in the championship.

Daryl Beattie (b.1970, Charleville, Queensland) achieved world fame in 1993 when he won the German 500cc Grand Prix on a Honda. He went on to win another two GPs in 1995 riding for Suzuki and narrowly missed winning the championship, beaten only by countryman Doohan. The talented Beattie might have achieved a world title and more, but a series of injuries forced him into retirement in 1997 after fi ve years on the world motorcycle racing scene.

Garry McCoy (b.1972, Sydney, New South Wales) began his international grand prix career in the 125cc series, taking his fi rst GP win in Malaysia in 1995 and another in front of a home crowd at Sydney’s Eastern Creek in 1996. After moving up to the 500cc championship in 1998, he won three GPs with Yamaha in South Africa, Portugal and Spain in 2000. He rode for Kawasaki’s new MotoGP team in 2003 before switching to world superbikes with Ducati in 2004 and taking his maiden win at Phillip Island.

Sheetlet of fi ve x $1.00 and cheque book cover

Since the fi rst Christmas stamps were issued in Australia in 1957 there have been many different interpretations of the traditional Christmas story. This year, the Christmas stamps were designed by graphic designer Jeanette Fallon whose designs convey the joy of Christmas.

The familiar symbols and characters of the Nativity are the central elements of each design. These elements are combined with symbols reminiscent of Christmas decorations reminding us that the common themes of the secular and religious observances during the holiday season are celebration, joy, happiness, love, caring and living in harmony.

The designs are deliberately intricate and detailed. Surfaces are ornamented and embellished. The use of gold alludes to the richness of religious icons; the depth of colour captures the richness of Christmas baubles.

Each stamp glitters like a precious treasure to mark Christmas 2004.

The stamps are Mary and the baby Jesus (45c domestic card only concession rate); The angel appears to the shepherds (50c domestic base rate); Three wise men ($1.00 international card only concession rate). In the aerogramme’s illustration area, three wise men on camels traverse sand dunes that sparkle like Christmas baubles. The star of Bethlehem appears in the stamp area.

In the issueThis issue includes gummed and self-adhesive stamps, an aerogramme, a stamp pack and a set of three maximum cards. The self-adhesive booklet of 20 x 45c stamps with 20 “card only” stickers will be produced in a new format (see facing page) and distributed to retail outlets in a chequebook (20 booklets of 20 x 45c stamps).

The international card only concession rate stamp will also be available in a new format, a sheetlet of five x $1.00 self-adhesive stamps. This sheetlet will also be distributed to retail outlets in a chequebook format (20 booklets of five x $1.00).

Also new this year is a set of Christmas cards and co-ordinating pre-paid envelopes. The designs are based on this year’s Christmas stamps. Each box of 12 cards includes four cards of each of the three card designs, (one design based on each stamp), and 12 PPEs. Priced at just $12.95 for 12 cards and PPEs, this is fantastic value.

Postal stationery collectors can purchase single PPEs for their collections. These are available mint and postmarked by mail order from the Australian Philatelic Bureau.

Koala Count

The Koala Count identifies specific reprints. A koala symbol printed in the selvedge adjacent to stamps, down either side of a sheet, indicates a reprint, two koalas the second reprint, and so on. A kangaroo indicates the fifth reprint.

In each issue of the Bulletin we publish a list of the stamp issues reprinted since the previ-ous issue. Once a year (usually in the June-July Bulletin) we print a summary list of covering reprints since the previous annual summary.

The previous summary list was printed in the June-July 2004 Bulletin.

The 2004 Collection of Australian Stamps showcases all of the gummed stamps and miniature sheets issued throughout the year, along with the stories behind the issues.

The collection features an outstanding range of diverse and interesting stamp issues from the Landmark Bridges issue through to Olympic Games 2004. The collection provides a unique glimpse of Australia in 2004.

Exclusive to this year’s collection is the Australian Gold Medallists stamp sheetlet. Purchasing the collection is the only way you can obtain this very special item. Also included is Rainforest Butterfl ies, the fi nal issue in the Nature of Australia series which began six years ago.

The 2004 Collection of Australian Stamps will appeal to the most discerning stamp enthusiast. It also makes an ideal gift for anyone with an interest in Australia whether or not they are already interested in stamps.

The collection is produced in two versions, the “Annual Collection” (previously called the “Deluxe Edition”) and the Executive Edition.

The content of the two versions is the same. Variations to the cover, slipcase and page fi nish will help collectors choose which version they would prefer in their collection.

The Annual Collection For this version the cover and slipcase is the third in a series using a painterly textured fi nish with cloth binding in a coordinating colour.

The slipcase features the main image on a deep blue water texture background. A coloured panel down the left is edged with a gold foil strip. The cover uses the same style and theme with a cream watercolour background instead of the slipcase’s blue.

Both slipcase and cover feature an image of Sydney Harbour – with a ferry sailing under the famous bridge – from the travel poster used for the $2.00 Bon Voyage stamp.

The Executive EditionThis edition features luxurious gilt edged pages and brass corner protectors on the prestigious black leather look cover. The cover features classic gold foil embossed typography which is repeated on the black leather look slipcase.

21 April 2005

The fourth book in Australia Post’s Engraved Stamps of Australia series will be released on 21 April 2005 at Pacifi c Explorer 2005 World Stamp Expo.

Thirty two proofs printed from original stamp dies and housed in archival mounts are a notable feature of this and the previous books in this series.

Another continuing feature of the series is the printing of all the die proofs featured in a book in a single common colour. This book’s die proofs will be printed in dark green.

Transport and communications – a selection of the engraved stamps of the Commonwealth of Australia, will feature the Australian engraved stamps listed below.

The book’s author, philatelic historian Richard Breckon, says the book will provide comprehensive coverage of the various engraved stamps associated with this theme.

“A special feature will be the inclusion of the non-adopted die engraved for the 5s. ‘Guba’ air mail stamp of 1939. This will be a wonderful opportunity to acquire an example of this famous never-issued stamp.”

Bulletin readers can purchase the book for A$165.00 (includes GST), using the enclosed form*.

Orders will be processed as they are received. A maximum of 2,500 copies will be produced. A small number of copies will be held back to be sold at Pacifi c Explorer.

*This book can only be ordered using the special Engraved Stamp Book order form.
