from the editorWelcome to the special Red Nose Day edition of Stamford Style Magazine. This month we’ve dedicated some of our regular features to Red Nose Day 2011, which is taking place on March 18th, in order to spur you on to raise some money for some really good causes.

Following on from the success of our Ragdale Hall Competition we have another competition this month where you can win £50 worth of White Stuff vouchers.

As many families prepare to tighten their belts in the current economic climate, NCT’s Nearly New Sales offer new and

expectant parents a financial lifeline, as an alternative to forking out for brand new baby products. With VAT rising to 20%, child benefit payments frozen for three years, housing benefits capped and child tax credits cut, many families will bear the brunt of the changes 2011 will bring. But in the tough economic climate, NCT Nearly New Sales provide a haven for cash-strapped parents, allowing families to sell off their unwanted baby goods. Meanwhile, mums and dad-to-be can save a fortune on preparing for the arrival of their new baby.

NCT Stamford, Bourne & Deeping Branch Nearly New Sale is on at Bourne Corn Exchange on Saturday 26th March 2011 from 11:30am – 1pm. Early admission at 11am to NCT members (with card).

Visiting your local NCT Nearly New Sale is the perfect way to kit out your kids for less than high street prices. The Sales are not exclusively for NCT members; they are open to everyone whether buying, selling or both! On average, parents spend £27.25 at a Sale, which could buy a range of items such as bedding, clothes, a changing station or high chair. With average Sale prices being a third of full price goods on the high street, a family can expect to save around £54.50.

Last year, more than 200,000 parents attended an NCT Nearly New Sale, raising more than £1 million for the charity. More than 600 Sales were held across the UK, with 50,000 parents selling over 1 million items. In addition, every item bought from an NCT Nearly New Sale is an item which isn’t going to landfill.

Parents are welcome to come along as buyers or sellers with just one condition - that the goods they bring must be ‘nearly new’. To sell, you must register in advance as a seller and have a seller’s number. Email [email protected] or call on 0844 243 6280 deadline for seller registration is 18 March 2011. The terms are that 70% of the proceeds go to the seller and 30% to the NCT.

Beat the Spending Cuts At Your Local NCT Nearly New Sale A PRESTIGIOUS venue on the outskirts of

Peterborough is getting in the fundraising spirit ahead of Comic Relief.

Emma Jones, part of the conference team at Holmewood Hall, will be braving the skies above Sibson Airfield on Saturday March 19 when she takes place in a tandem parachute jump to raise money for Comic Relief.

She said: “It is something I have always wanted to do, and when I looked at the options to raise money for Comic Relief, I thought I should just go for it and take the bull by the horns and so I booked it the same day.

“Now I have made the decision with the full support of my family and work colleagues I am really excited!”

As well as supporting Emma, the rest of the team at the historic venue will be taking part in a “Grow A Nose” competition, and head chef Lee Osbourne will be making red cupcakes and flapjacks during March, which will be on sale and also available as part of conference packages for an extra £1.50 each, which will go straight to Comic Relief.

Comic Relief raises money to transform the lives of poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged people across the UK and Africa.

Set in 14 acres, the present day Holmewood Hall was built for the distinguished Wells family, who inherited the manor of Holme in 1752. Today it is a thriving conference venue and is becoming increasingly popular as a place to stage weddings.

If you would like to sponsor Emma please make a donation via her Red Nose sponsorship page online at http://my.rednoseday.com/emmajones

Fashion Show highlight for Fairtrade FortnightThe highlight of the

Stamford Fairtrade Fortnight will be a fashion

show featuring dome of the sector’s leading brands.Organised by the Stamford Fairtrade Town Steering Group, the show in association with Greencircle, will be held at the Barn Hill Methodist Church, 7pm on Saturday March 12th and will include a special preview of the Emma Watson Collection.

Emma, better known for her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter movies, has put her name to an exclusive range of clothes under the People Tree label, and local models will be showing off the range on the catwalk

in front of an audience of around 200 people.

“The theme for this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight is ‘Show Off your Label’,” said George Hetherington, spokesperson for the Stamford Steering group. “This fashion show will showcase Fairtrade Cotton and how it can be transformed into modern, stylish clothes for adults and children,” he added. There will also be a short presentation by People Tree demonstrating how buying Fairtrade clothes cab change the lives of the people that produce them.

The event is being supported by Greencircle - Stamford’s only retail outlet dedicated to fairly traded products. There will be an opportunity to purchase clothes after the show.

Owner, Simon Tee said, “We are delighted to throw our weight behind this initiative from the Stamford Fairtrade Town Steering Group, who have done such a great job promoting fairtrade in the area.”

There are two ticket options available for the show. Ground floor tickets will include buffet, punch, tea or coffee and are £10. Balcony seats, which include tea or coffee, are £4. Tickets are available from Greencircle on St. Mary’s Hill.

“We are planning this as a ticket only event, so it is obviously important to buy in advance to avoid disappointment,” added George Hetherington.

springfashionWE PREVIEW THE LATEST SPRING FASHIONS AVAILABLE LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY.

You may think that florals are only for the more feminine of the female species, but you’d be wrong, oh so wrong, my friend. Take a look at

ASOS’s cute blue hotpants dotted with pink flowers and tell me they wouldn’t look amazing with some kick-arse boots. New Look has a so-trendy-it-hurts-and-we- want-one-now jumpsuit, while over at Lipsy there is a dark playsuit that even a hardcore tomboy will want to fool around with.

M&Co has some utterly gorgeous florals to choose from, but for a casual look I recommend its dusky pink top

cinched in with a belt. Internacionale, Bonmarché, A|wear and French Connection all rock in the floral separates stakes, so grab your wallet and get thee to the shops – you’ll be overwhelmed by the choice out there.

Floral isn’t the only option though. Nautical stripes are making a comeback this spring and there’s a great selection from Crew Clothing and White Stuff.

Just be carfeful when mixing your floral patterns with the stripes, it can be done but just be careful that people don’t try to ‘adjust their television set’ because it’s hurting their eyes!

There used to be a time when a man could muddle his way through the spring season in the same old t-shirt and jeans. But this year menswear has been

given a super smart makeover. It’s all crisp white this and smartly tailored that. No room for mucking it up.

What you need is a high street hit-list – a foolproof guide to this season’s key fashion buys. So we’ve rounded up all the key products you need to get the look. First up, it’s all-American retro preppy (we blame Glee). Translate as turned-up jeans, buttoned- up cardies and shirts – with a classic pair of shades, of course. Take inspiration from Tesco (F&F cardigan £14, shirt £8, Cherokee jeans £20) and grab a pair of classic Converse sneakers from Jacamo (£70) or ankle pumps from Dune.

J by Jasper Conran at Debenhams gives the preppy look a nautical twist (jacket £75, chinos £35) – think 1950s summer in the Hamptons. Finish with this retro bowling-style bag from River Island in red, white and blue. Add one of this

spring’s must-have straw trilby hats from Matalan or Marks & Spencer (trilby £18, polo shirt £25, blazer £99) to give the nautical vibe an edgier spin. And don’t forget one of this spring’s top footwear trends – the loafer. There’s no getting away from it, so go all out with this bright blue pair from Red Herring at Debenhams (£40).

The pinnacle of this super smart look is the all-white ensemble. Kind of Brideshead Revisited, only cooler. So stock up on white jeans, blazers and shirts (Paul Smith jacket £550, trousers £170 Kenzo at House of Fraser) – and stay away from grass verges and beer gardens.

Finally, for those guys finding it all a bit too much, you can still find fashion refuge in a bit of urban chic. Military shirts (George £12.50), satchels (Next £28), kit bags (Debenhams £45) and a khaki biker jacket (Marks & Spencer £49.50) will update your wardrobe without going too far down the freshly laundered route.

This year, four of Britain’s best loved comics will face the battle of a lifetime, as they campaign fiercely for their limited edition

flavours of Walkers crisps. They will fight to win the hearts of the British public in a bid to make their flavour the bestseller, and to reign above their fellow funny-men, as well as raise money for Red Nose Day which launches nationwide on Thursday 3rd February. The rules of combat are simple - for every special flavour pack sold Walkers will donate 5p to Comic Relief and the comedian whose flavour raises the most money will win. The losing three will face the torturous forfeit of being waxed in front of their peers and the public; with a mystery ‘beautician’ on hand to ensure the penalty runs as smoothly as possible! The triumphant winner will be announced on Red Nose Day on Friday 18th March.

The public can now taste the delicious new flavours inspired by some of Britain’s best loved dishes and get behind their favourite. The four mighty comedians and their flavours are; Stephen Fry and Stephen Fry Up Flavour, Jimmy Carr and Jimmy Con Carrne Flavour, Al Murray and Steak and Al Pie Flavour, and Frank Skinner and Frank Roast Dinner Flavour. These mischievous comedians will be putting blood, sweat and tears into the battle, and no doubt pulling out some cheeky sabotage tactics along the way to rise to victory.

“Walkers loves having a laugh and Red Nose Day is a great way to have fun and raise money for a brilliant cause,” said Miranda Sambles, Marketing Director for Walkers. “So to help us achieve our goal of raising over £1m, we’ve enlisted these four well-loved British comedians who, along with their delicious new crisp flavours, will be going into battle in our Clash of the Comics! May the best man win!”

The Contenders...

“What sounds more delicious than Steak and Al Pie crisps?! This is the food of the Brits - I’m going to win this on flavour alone! If Jimmy Carr thinks he can beat me with a bit of chilli then he has another thing coming. This is war!”

“I am proud to champion the great Fry Up flavour. My crisps perfectly embody each delicious component of the great British fry up, with layer upon layer of quivering, shivering tastes that keep on giving. It is plain to all that my flavour is infinitely superior to the others, so I look forward to flattening the rather pitiful competition with the frying pan of triumph.”

“All my life I’ve searched for something that was truly worth fighting for - something noble, uplifting and made from potatoes; then came Frank’s Roast Dinner crisps. No other comic-championed crisp can be allowed to stand in my way. This is my time. Wake up and smell the gravy!”

“What motivated my choice of Chilli Con Carrne was obviously a really bad pun, but as luck would have it they’re delicious. I’m pretty confident I won’t get waxed. The hair on my legs is safer than the hair in a German ladies arm pit. And remember, every packet sold raises money for a great cause!”

A bit about Walkers Crisps!Walkers is one of the nation’s biggest and best loved British brands. Having created delicious potato crisps for the past 60 years, it is a true flavour innovator! Now four great British comedians will be showing the public whether they know a thing or two about delicious crisps flavours. The question is who will sink and who will swim in the Clash of the Comics?

A weekend in Rome

THE ANCIENT AND NOT SO ANCIENT SITES YOU SIMPLY MUST NOT MISS.

by Claire Maxted

The trapdoor opened and the lion roared. Hungry, scared, it ran towards me, sweat dripped from its pelt as its limbs tightened

into the final pounce. The crowd went wild. Over and over again they chanted, “Um, terribly sorry, but would you mind awfully taking a picture of me and my wife? We want to show our grandchildren that we’ve been to the Colosseum.” My gladiator daydream snapped shut and the Colosseum melted back into the weather-beaten icon of Rome that it is today. This grand, elliptical amphitheatre of archways, commissioned in AD72 by Emperor Vespasian, once rang with the noise of 100,000 Romans, baying for blood. You can almost imagine the ghosts of the 9,000 wild animals killed in the inaugural games, still prowling around the site. If you close your eyes you can almost feel the gladiators’ terror and the gore thirst of the crowd in this football stadium-sized ruin. Today, the Colosseum only echoes with tourist coos and camera clicks, because it is a must see on any self respecting sightseer’s list.

Rome may not have been built in a day, but you can

definitely cram the best of its sights into an exciting weekend – Saturday for ancient Rome and Sunday for, well, not so ancient Rome.

Continuing on from the ancient Colosseum is the Arch of Constantine, a 25m high arch decorated with gods, animal sacrifices, chariots, armies and emperors, built in AD315 to mark the victory of Constantine over the larger army of Maxentius at Milvian Bridge. If arches are your thing, don’t miss the nearby Arch of Titus and Arch of Septimus Severus, both richly decorated, like ancient billboards advertising the power of the victorious emperors.

Then, take a stroll to the Roman Forum whose arches tower above you, scraping the blue sky. This was the centre of ancient Rome, overlooked by Palantine Hill where Romulus founded the city in 8BC. Here, trees and shrubs fight the broken, wind-crumbled boulders and lonely statues for supremacy and you can marvel at the skill of the craftsmen who carved the battle scenes and Latin words into the rock by hand.

The next day, step through time a few thousand years to admire St Peter’s Square, which is, confusingly, a circle. This impressive open space was designed in the 17th century to

allow as many people at once to see the Pope Alexander VII give his blessing. Today thousands mill around the central obelisk whose shadow casts clock-hands round the floor. St Peter’s Basilica completes this spectacular scene, a late Renaissance church that can hold 60,000 people. You could spend years looking at the golden roof, high dome, intricately gilded pillars, marble sculptures and tombs of this famous pilgrimage site.

But you’ve only got a weekend, so drag yourself away for a rest on one of the 138 Spanish Steps. This 18th century staircase is the widest in Europe and makes a great place to watch people climbing from the Piazza di Spagna to the Piazza Trinita dei Monti and its church at the top.

Lastly, and perhaps the most fitting place to contemplate your Roman journey is the world famous, Trevi Fountain. Grey-blue water cascades from its 18th century Baroque

white stone pillars dotted with figurines and horses that surround Oceanus the water god. Legend has it that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain it means you will return to Rome. And after only one weekend in this city, you’ll soon find that there is so much to linger over that a return trip becomes a very attractive option.

IT’S hard to believe, but a recent study has shown that as many as four million British children are wearing the wrong size shoes.

The figure is shockingly high – and mainly due to the fact that parents have not been given the right advice when buying footwear for their offspring.

Go to the experts – and follow these three simple rules when you do so:

• Ensure the shop has a large range of width fittings – and at least widths E, F and G. There should also be a good range of stock and brands (e.g. Clarks or Start-rite) as all feet suit different styles and brands.

• Make sure the fitter is trained and has experience of fitting children’s shoes on a regular basis – not just for occasions like back to school. Don’t be afraid to ask the fitter about their experience.

• Make sure the fitter measures your child’s foot length and width and understands the depth and type of foot in question.

Walls with IMPACT!

If you’re looking for a talking point in your latest decorating project, or fed up with going through books and books of wallpaper designs? If so there

is an alternative that’s easy to put up and will be completely bespoke.

Jill and Carl Pybus of Graphix, a design company from Surfleet, near Spalding, have the technology to transform your walls with the latest vinyl-based material that can be printed with literally any image you require.

It’s clearly a product that they believe in too, as they have tastefully added several examples of what can be achieved in their own home.

Jill said, “I’ve always shied away from clutter and fussiness and kept the house quite spare, with nothing much on the walls and natural tones.”

It all started when Carl aquired a very large-scale digital printer which has the capability to print large graphics for exhibitions and displays. They then discovered a fantastic product that is vinyl-based, wipe-clean and is incredibly strong so there is little risk of it tearing. One of the main features of this material is the adhesive that is used on the

back means that it’s incredibly easy to put on the wall or reposition if you haven’t quite get it in the right place. Also when you have grown tired of the design you can remove it from the wall without causing any blemishes behind.

Carl says, “This really is such an amazing material that enables anybody to create a wall with real impact. It’s so easy to put up, even if you don’t have any experience of wallpapering.

The possibilities for these bespoke wallcoverings are endless, but here are a few examples of what can be achieved with a little imagination;

Offices and meeting roomsCompanies can really use this wallcovering technology to great effect in their meeting rooms, waiting areas or offices with dramatic effect.

Carl and Jill have got a great night-time image of St. Paul’s Cathedral in their office (see main pic above), but you could have product images, fashion shoots or just about anything you like that will make these areas a talking point amongst your customers.

Children’s BedroomsMost children have a favourite TV character or band that they would love to have on their bedroom wall. In Jill and Carl’s house they have a room for eight-year-old Ellie where Tinkerbell, from Peter Pan, looks over the bed.

“We’ve also done a teenager’s bedroom in an american theme and one with artwork by the famous graffiti artist Banksy,” says Carl.

Kitchens and Utility RoomsWith the wallcovering material being wipe-clean and durable it’s great for creating dramatic splashbacks above sinks.

“We print the image required onto the material and then laminate it to give it further durability against splashes and then you simply stick it on,” says Carl.

Contemporary WC’sOkay so this may not be your first room you think of when it comes to decorating, but you can really get your dinner guests talking witha feature wall in your downstairs toilet!

Jill and Carl have recently suppied a wallcovering that did just that and, as you can see, it looks amazing!

For more information on the wallcoverings please contact Jill or Carl at Graphix Design & Print, Tudor Offices, Thary Lane, Surfleet, Spalding, Lincs. PE11 4BN or telephone them on 01775 680718. You can also see some examples on their website, www.graphixonline.co.uk

Profile: Instep Social Media

The rise in the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter by established businesses has been the inspiration behind

the formation of a new company. Business partners Ella Jenkins and Mary Lamont formed Instep Social Media to demystify social media for new and small businesses.Ella Jenkins, who previously worked in Business Development and Mary Lamont who has experience in PR and Marketing and currently runs a plumbing business with her husband, were discussing how large national companies were utilising social media to increase company awareness and interact with their customers. The discussion turned to how they could help other businesses make better use of social media and Instep Social Media was formed.

Social media is suitable for any type of business, our clients range from pubs to gift shops. Instep Social Media will demonstrate to businesses how to utilise social media using sites such Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. It will create a company’s profile on social media sites and post regular profile updates. Ella and Mary are currently putting together a series of workshops for those clients

who feel confident in controlling their own social media profiles but need help and direction in the initial set up process and advice on which social media medium is best suited to them.

Ella Jenkins said, ‘There has been a huge growth in the use of social networking sites in the last few years. Many businesses have grasped this opportunity and are using these sites to raise their company’s profile with great effect. Mary and I feel strongly that there is an opportunity for smaller and start up businesses to follow the lead of the larger companies. Our aim is to help them to achieve this. Many people are intimidated by social networking sites but Instep Social Media can take the mystery out of social media and turn it into an effective marketing tool for businesses’

The Peugeot RCZ has a tough battle on it’s hands in a market that’s got well established rivals, such as the Audi TT, which as we all know is a good looking

coupé and the usual Greman quality, but maybe it’s time that the TT lost it’s crown to a new contender.

It’s fairly common these days to go to a motor show and see some fantastic concept cars with dramatic lines and styling, but then we’re always disappointed when we find out that the concept car is going to saty as a concept car.

Peugeot have broken the mould with the RCZ Sports Coupé as the road-going version has stayed true to its roots as a concept car. Despite the RCZ sharing it’s underpinnings with the 308 and the 3008 crossover it has kept the ‘double bubble’ rear roofline and the striking profile.

So, ‘is the RCZ more about style thatn substance?’ I hear you ask. In Short ‘NO!’ The RCZ is one of those cars, that when given the opportunity to drive, simply makes you smile - and there are lots of reasons for it to make you smile too.

For starters there’s the feeling when you get inside the car.

Ok, so many of you say that it’s not as upmarket as the TT but I firmly believe that Peugeot have done a great job with the interior and you certainly don’t feel like you’re an inferior car. The model that I tested was the 1.6 litre, 200bhp GT version, which comes with leather as standard, was very smart indeed with a first-class fit and finish.

The seating position, and indeed the adjustability of the seats and steering wheel, really help to give you that conventional feel. The RCZ is a 2+2 and if the people in the front are short then you will squeeze four people in, but it’s probably best if you stick to having small children in the back. That said, there is plenty of room in the boot (no I’m not suggesting the you put the kids in there!) which is longer and wider than that of the TT.

Standard kit across the RCZ range includes rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control and sports seats, whilst the GT models have the leather interior, heated front seats, automatic headlights and front parking sensors.

But what’s it like to drive? An absolute pleasure! I have to

motoring

admit that upon hearing that this was a 1.6 litre engine - I had my doubts, even if it does produce 200bhp, but I found it to be really responsive with a fantastic 6-speed gearbox. What really surprised me was the amount of torque that you get right through the gears. Those of you who can get excited about the noise that a car makes won’t be disappointed either. At about 4,500rpm the exhaust note has a lovely rasping sound that makes you feel like you’re in something a bit more exotic.

For those of you who would prefer something a bit more frugal there is a diesel option that has a 2.0 litre HDi engine that produces 163bhp with a combined fuel economy of 53.2mpg.

As far as the handling goes, the RCZ’s tweaked chassis is superb and this is one of the best handling cars we’ve tested. With it’s low centre of gravity, stiff bodyshell and wide track you get the feeling that there is almost no body-roll at all.

What surprised me most was the amount of grip that you got from the front. It’s not unusual for high-performance front-wheel drive cars to suffer from a bit of understeer, but even if you were to tighted your line slightly mid-bend you don’t get the feeling that the nose is going straight on. The steering is sharp and responsive and the brakes are an absolute pleasure.

In summary this Peugeot RCZ THP200 GT is a car that Peugeot should be proud of and one that I would be proud of, if I were to own one. It has the best styling in it’s class and it’s performace takes you back to the days of the 205 GTi when Peugeot were at the top of the pile when it came to affordable performance and desirability. So, in answer to the question ‘have Peugeot built this year’s must-have sports coupé’?
