SABIC®STAMAX
The key to cutting costs in the automotive business! SABIC®
STAMAX is a long glass fi ber reinforced poly-propylene, which
is sold primarily to global system or tier one suppliers and
producers of moulded plastic parts and components for the
automotive industry. SABIC® STAMAX is a unique product that
helps manufacturers reduce their costs without sacrifi cing
the performance of their products, thanks to the ease with
which it can replace steel components and more expensive
composites. It is hardly surprising that interest in this product
is growing so strongly.
Eye-catching applications ...
SABIC® STAMAX resin is used in more than 100 running
automotive applications, primarily in large moulded parts,
such as front-end modules, door modules, hatchbacks,
dashboard frames, bumper beams and seat structures. It
also features in parts such as battery trays and mechanical
and electrical/electronical (E&E) components, where the
composite SABIC® STAMAX composites shows the capability
to replace short glass fi ber reinforced PA and PBT by
offering lower density and price/kg. The product is clearly
aimed at the automotive industry, where most buyers of
SABIC® STAMAX composites are to be found. Leading car
manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Renault, Ford, PSA, Skoda,
SEAT and Mercedes have already successfully incorporated
the above mentioned structures, modules and components
into their most eye-catching models.
... unique features and top service!
SABIC® STAMAX resin is the perfect answer to the car
industry’s demand for lower weight and cost effective
solutions. It stands out from other glass fi ber reinforced
materials because of the opportunities it offers for reducing
costs and the service and engineering support the company
provides to its customers. Its unique properties are the result
of an advanced production process and SABIC’s extensive
knowledge of polymers and additives. The rod-shaped pellets
have a core comprising thousands of thin, pre-impregnated
glass fi bers with a polypropylene shell. SABIC® STAMAX resin
is available in a variety of concentrations (20-60% glass
fi ber), which makes it suitable for an extremely wide range
of load bearing applications. The different concentrations
considerably increase the product’s fl exibility for its users.
Your committed global partner!
For nearly 30 years SABIC has consistently provided
specialist, tailor-made solutions to satisfi ed partners
in the global automotive industry. We are much more
than simply your raw material supplier. Above all, we are
your committed global partner in engineering. We closely

collaborate with our customers during the development
stage to fi nd the most effective material solutions for each
design, drawing on our lengthy experience in the automotive
sector and our thorough and unique knowledge of material
properties. SABIC® STAMAX components and parts are
engineered according to the customer’s requirements at the
Design & Application Development Centre in Geleen, The
Netherlands, where dedicated engineers use their extensive
experience to fi nd the optimal balance between functionality,
weight and costs.
SABIC secures global supply through its production lines in
Europe and in North America.
Outstanding properties ...
SABIC® STAMAX resin has outstanding properties and can
be readily processed. It offers high stiffness, tensile strength
and impact resistance, low creep and can be used across a
wide temperature range. The plastic has a low coeffi cient
of thermal expansion, a low shrinkage and a high degree of
reproducibility.
... numerous advantages in processing ...
SABIC® STAMAX composite allows components to be injection
moulded in a single piece - a process that is mostly possible
using the customer’s existing injection-moulding machines. In
other words, processing SABIC® STAMAX requires little, if any,
additional investment in new equipment. SABIC® STAMAX is
supplied in the form of 12 mm pellets that are processed via
injection moulding (IM). In extremely demanding applications
where even higher impact resistance is required, 24 mm
pellets in combination with extrusion compression moulding
(ECM) are used.
... working with customers ...
The SABIC global automotive team works closely with our
customers on process and mould design and offers technical
support during processing and production. This service,
alongside the material’s outstanding properties, gives SABIC®
STAMAX resin a real edge in the market.
... and fl exibility!
SABIC® STAMAX resin is also an ideal alternative for converters
who want fl exibility and further cost optimization. The
availability of material with a high glass fi ber content
(up to 60%) means that converters can mix it with virgin
polypropylene on their processing equipment to create the
precise glass fi ber content they require. This ensures optimum
fl exibility and security as:
• There is no need to invest in dedicated compounding
equipment.
• There is no risk concerning material consistency and
properties.
• The converter will never be saddled with non-productive
equipment.

SABIC® STAMAX (homopolymer-based)
SABIC® STAMAX homopolymer-based materials are used primarily
in interior and under the bonnet applications such as tail-gates,
front-end modules and door structures. The materials offer low-
weight, cost effective solutions due to their extremely high
stiffness and good dimensional stability
SABIC® STAMAX (copolymer-based)
SABIC® STAMAX copolymer-based materials are used primarily
in interior applications such as dashboard carriers. They offer
very high impact performance, fully complying with dashboard
carrier knee and head impact requirements, as well as good
stiffness and smell performance.
Low emission grades are available on request.

SHORT CYCLE TIMES
SABIC Innovative Plastics 8
Pre-drying
Material is delivered dry in octabins. For storage in a cold
place, allow material to slowly reach room temperature
before opening the package. When condensation is visible
or could be expected, drying is recommended (2 hours at
T= 80 - 100 °C). For aesthetical parts pre-drying is
recommended.
Melt temperature - cylinder settings
In contrast to many other materials, a fl at or slightly
decreasing temperature profi le yields best results with
respect to optimum fi ber dispersion, a short cycle time, and
minimal glass fi ber damage.
Possible cylinder settings:
To improve the transport of the granules the temperature
of the cooled zone should not be too high; preferred
temperature in the feed block 30 - 60°C.
Due to the high level of thermal stabilization in the material,
cylinder temperatures of 260°C and residence times of
up to an hour do not lead to degradation of the material.
Nevertheless idle times should be avoided, as the length
of molten material bed in the cylinder will increase. As the
material experiences more shear during transport in this
longer molten material bed, the fi ber length and therefore
the mechanical properties may be unnecessarily reduced.
Mould temperature
A broad range of mould temperatures can be used: 20 to
80°C. A typical value is 50°C. High mould temperatures
of around 70 to 80°C may improve the surface fi nish of
the product. (Less glass fi ber marking.) Infl uence of mould
temperature on crystallinity, and hence properties, as found
for many other materials, are negligible.
