DE NIRO – A PHENOMENONThe German artist, Klaus Philipp once again graces the cover of our Stallion directory, and this year, the horse we celebrate is one of the modern greats, the number one WBFSH dressage stallion in the world, De Niro. There can be no doubting the dominant dressage line in the world is the D line of the great Donnerhall, not only through

his direct progeny, but through grandsons and granddaughters.

Licensed in 1995, De Niro was competing at Grand Prix level by the year 2000, at the age of only seven, with Dolf-Dietram Keller – and the following year carried Mr Keller to the title, German Professional

Champion in 2002.

De Niro was only moderately successful in competition himself, and he certainly would not have forced his way into the German Dressage Team, as three of his progeny did at the London Games. His strength is as a sire who consistently produces horses with the

trainability to compete at the highest level.

It is really a measure of the greatness of the line founded by Donnerhall, that it has been able to establish a stallion line that thrives and gets stronger every year and De Niro has proven himself

a worth heir to his sire.

Ampère was Champion of the stallion licensing in Den Bosch and then the champion of the performance test in Ermelo 2008 with scores of 8 for walk, 9 for trot, 9.5 for canter, 9 for suppleness, 8.5 for self-carriage and balance, 9 for rideability and character, and 9 for suitability as a dressage horse, leaving a total score of 88.5. Ampère’s first crop produced five sons who were selected for the KWPN Stallion licensing in 2012 and they were a lovely line of horses – really stamped with the mark of their sire. Three of the Ampères were approved for performance testing, with Excalibur (Ampère / De Niro / Lord Sinclair) one of the seven into the championship.

Ampère is much appreciated in his new home in Sweden. According to Swedish dressage great, Jan Brink: “One of his greatest strengths are his amazing gaits with great movability, a lot of air, always uphill and with his hind-legs very well placed far in underneath his stomach.”

“His offspring seem to have inherited his great gaits as well. Considering the fact that he is still so young and his first crop are just this year getting old enough to be tested as breeding stallions it is quite unique that he has already three approved stallions in the KWPN. Further to this one of his foals was sold last year at the Vechta auction in Germany, for not less than 200,000 EUR – a record amount for a foal, which I believe speaks for itself. I myself have never seen a foal move with such gaits.”

Despite his young age, Balou du Rouet is a trademark stallion held in international esteem. More than 120 of his descendants are successful at advanced (S) level; the competition winnings of his offspring are already 742.880 euro. Each year his offspring enrich not only the finals of the Bundeschampionship, but also international level sport. His daughter Baloubetta du Soleil won in Rotterdam, the licensed stallion Horse Gym’s Balzaci with Felix Hassmann has had fourteen wins in advanced (S) classes and the licensed stallion Balloon has competed successfully for the Irish team with his rider Shane Breen. Even as a young stallion Belissimo M showed his outstanding qualities: top auction horse, record breaking stallion performance test winner, Bundeschampion, finalist at the World Championship for young dressage horses. After a break from sport, he returned in 2011 at advanced (S) level and followed on with victories and placings in Grand Prix classes ridden by Hayley Beresford. He finished the Olympic qualification for London 2012 as best horse of the Australian team. He’s a breeding phenomenon. Despite only having been used sparingly for breeding purposes during his competitive career, Breitling W has sired a series of absolutely top-rate horses, clearly demonstrating his absolutely spectacular gene pool. His progeny have accumulated more than EUR 100,000 in lifetime competition winnings and include Burgpokal winner Blind Date. Breitling W has also produced numerous highly placed finalists at the Bundeschampionat and the World Championships. Dressage horse breeding in a nutshell: The large framed Bretton Woods inspires with his expression, rideability and outstanding pure gaits and he continues to bring new admirers under his spell. In 2011, he won the bronze medal at the World Championships for five-year old dressage horses. One year before, he won in a convincing way in the Netherlands, where he achieved a score of 10.0 for his rideability. Prior to that, he was placed first in his 50-day test of the KWPN. His former rider Emmelie Scholtens described him as “The best horse I have ever ridden”. Bretton Woods is now ridden by Matthias Alexander Rath, who is carefully preparing him for the highest level of the sport and the pair have achieved several top rankings at Prix St Georges level. Bretton Woods’ offspring are brilliant in type and, as expected, big movers. In 2013 he presented, for the first time, a large number of foals in Germany, with the vast majority being awarded premiums and achieving top prices at auctions. Bretton Woods’ dam, Annabel, produced, with the stallion Jazz, the licensed stallion Chagall and was for years one of the highest ranked mares in KWPN breeding. With the exceptional black stallion De Niro, who is placed first in the WBFSH ranking of dressage sires, and the esteemed Romancier, who is also dam sire of Fürst Romancier, the maternal genetics are strongly secured.

Callaho’s Benicio is the winner of the 6yo class for dressage horses at the 2011 Bundeschampionate in what was described by Christoph Hess as “a great moment”. Callaho’s Benicio scored a 10 for his trot and walk, a 9.5 for overall impression and a 9 for his canter. You wouldn’t think it could get any better, however, at his 30 day test he scored a 10 for all three paces, with a final score for dressage of 9.88 exceeding the score of his sire Belissimo M of 9.63 in 2002.

St.Pr.St Valencia is no slouch placing in tests for young riding horses as well as winning many accolades at the German Broodmare Show and Ratje-Niebuhr Show.

With progeny on the ground, it was no surprise that a Callaho’s Benicio filly was the winner of this year’s Hanoverian Foal Tour in Australia.

Catargo’s family tree includes the world’s legendary sires Capitol, Caletto II, Cor De La Bryere and Calypso I, and ties to superstars such as Calvaro and Come On. He was Australia’s first homebred representative at the 2005 Showjumping World Championships for Young Horses in Lanaken, Belgium. Catargo successfully competed at World Cup level for many years, placing in prestigious Grand Prix such as the Betty McVean Memorial Cup and winning the Part B Championship at Brisbane Royal Show. Catargo also trained to Inter I level in dressage, showing great trainability for sequence changes, canter pirouettes, half pass and engagement of paces.

His offspring have competed with great success in eventing and showjumping; he is one of few stallions in Australia to produce a three-star eventer and World Cup showjumper.

Fairbanks Cargo competed successfully up to three-star level eventing before being exported to Japan to contend the Asian Games. Cargo won the CCI** class at Melbourne International 3DE in 2012 and was 4th at Adelaide International 3DE in 2011. Cargo competed up to Mini Prix level in showjumping, and was named Equestrian QLD Horse of the Year in 2012. Another son, Fairbanks Caspar had a successful showjumping career up to World Cup level, including a 4th in the World Cup at Brisbane Royal Show in 2012. Catargo’s half sister, Fairbanks Elle is a successful eventing and showjumping horse, and was named QLD Eventing Mare of the Year in 2010 and 2012.

This young Dutch stallion actually has a dressage breeding value HIGHER than his great sire, Jazz! Chagall is out of an elite preferent mare, Annabel, who combines the most successful German dressage sire, De Niro and the top Rubinstein son, Romancier. His sire, Cartani, is by the two-time Olympic stallion Carthago Z out of one of the greatest mares by Landgraf ever - Taggi who competed with Soeren von Roenne at the Barcolona Games and the WEG in The Hague, where the pair finished third individually.

In 2013 he made his first-class debut in sport: He won several times in tests for young dressage horses and placed third in the Hanoverian Championship in Verden. Dante Weltino is a fabulous mover who was 1st Reserve Champion of the 2009 Oldenburg licensing at Vechta, going on to qualify for the Bundeschampionate in 2012 for five year old dressage horses. De Niro: Champion international dressage competitor and astounding breeding sire.

He won Vice Champion of the performance test in Adelheidsdorf with a score of 141.93 and went on to win international Grand Prix dressage tests. His record as a sire is remarkable. His son Dancier, was champion at the Verden licensing in 2004, in 2006 he sired no less than 14 competitors at the Bundeschampionat. Dornkaart is an imported Hanoverian stallion purchased in Verden, Germany, in 2006. He commenced his career in Australia in 2010. He has proven to be incredibly trainable and talented. His movement is very forward, uphill and with lovely cadence.

At the Oldenburg Stallion Days 2012 in Vechta Foundation set a milestone. After the performance test evaluation and his first foals, Foundation was the dominant I-a main premium winner of dressage stallions in 2012. Numerous foals out of his first crop were sold for top prices at foal auctions in Vechta and Verden. Foundation projects a certain charisma combined with enormous ground-covering movement, engaged hindquarters stepping under the centre of gravity, a wonderfully uphill canter and a fantastic character. Foundation has since won his first dressage tests up to elementary (L) level with his riders Anja Engelbart and Matthias-Alexander Rath. This year his first offspring will be presented at the licensings. He finished his 30-day test in Schlieckau with dream scores: a 10.0 for trot and canter in the final test, a 9.5 each for character and willingness to perform, as well as a 9.25 for rideability. His sire Fidertanz, striking NRW Champion Stallion in 2004, is successful up to Intermediaire I and has so far produced 41 licensed sons. Loris Flashpoint Af Lyn is a rare purebred Knabstrupper, the spotted warmblood from Denmark. The Knabstrupper is a colour variant of the once world famous and much sought after Danish Frederiksborg Baroque horse. These horses had a strong Spanish influence and bred at the Royal stud from the fifteenth century for close combat war horses and later for high school. In the 18th century they were used extensively in the travelling circuses throughout Europe and the USA. Today the breed is again gaining popularity, with both the older Baroque type and the taller sports type being bred and competed worldwide in the Olympic disciplines. Loris Flashpoint Af Lyn won over a lot of fans when exhibited at Equitana where people saw his uncomplicated calm nature, grace and style under saddle and spectacular colour and physique. Flashpoint combines the three most successful lines in modern breeding, Figaro, Apollon and Conetti Lynhoj, who are famous for their big movement and top jumping abilities.

Flashpoint is now proving his powerful jumping skills with wins and places in serious competition under the skillful training of James Arkins. Only rarely do you get a chance to breed to an acknowledged Olympic star, but that is just what Quando-Quando has to offer. The chestnut had a charmed career: top colt at the Vechta Auction, winner of the stallion licensing, and then champion of his performance test with 9.5 for rideability and straight 9s for walk, trot and canter. Sandokan twice received 9.5 in the qualifications, and 9.5 and 9.7 in the final, something which has not happened in the last 20 years! Even during his performance test in Adelheidsdorf in 2012, Sandokan was convincing. For his jumping abilities he received a perfect 10.0. His first offspring are expected in 2014. Sandokan’s pedigree offers the combination of the Bundeschampions Stakkato (1998) and Landor S (1997). Stakkato dominated the FN’s breeding value for jumping sires twelve times in a row. The dam’s sire Landor S was Bundeschampion and has also won advanced (S) classes. His sons, Lovis Corinth and Lauterbach, became champion stallions at the licensings of the Oldenburg-International (OI) showjumping studbook. Since then, the total number of licensed sons has increased to 33. Sandokan is six times inbred to the Hanoverian jumping legend Gotthard: twice through Stakkato, once through Landor S and three times through Graf Grannus showing the genetic strength of this outstanding young sire.

Sezuan passed his stallion performance test in 2012 in Denmark with scores never awarded before: He was given the highest possible score of 10.0 ten times!

Here is the most phenomenal show jumping sensation. Even at the time of his performance test in 1996, Stakkato showed amazing talent for jumping which is reflected in his score and first placing. At the Oldenburg Stallion Days 2013 Tolegro impressed not only with his noble outlook and disposition, but also with his optimal movement always carried forward from his hindquarters. On the lunging-rein he revealed ideal riding horse traits, which he confirmed spectacularly when he has been shown under saddle for first time. In a short space of time, Totilas set three world records with Edward Gal, which he then broke again and again. In only two years, this exceptional stallion won all the titles there are to win - two times individual gold and team gold at the 2010 World Championships, individual and team gold at the European Championships, 2010 World Cup winner and then best horse of the German silver team with Matthias Alexander Rath in 2011. Before this, he had already won the Grand Prix Special in Munich and Wiesbaden, became a two-time German Champion in Balve and won all three competitions in Aachen. Toto Jr is amongst the first progeny of the phenomenal dressage stallion Totilas to be approved, and he is the personal choice of Totilas’ trainer and rider, Edward Gal. He also impressed licensing commissions in both Hanover and the KWPN who were happy to license him before he went on to top the KWPN Stallion Performance Test.

We are limiting Visage’s World Cup appearances now in the interests of managing the near-catastrophic hock injury that had him out of action for almost two years after his return from Europe in 2010. This Danish stallion boasts a very modern build and captivatingly powerful gaits! ABOUT THE ARTISTKlaus Philipp is regarded as one of the world’s best equine artists. Not only has he portrayed some of the most famous Thoroughbred and Warmblood stallions, he is also known to perfectly capture the excitement of equestrian sport on canvas, whether it is eventing, racing, polo or

carriage driving.

Klaus Philipp is a true horseperson; he competed in eventing and was a member of the German mounted police force for many years. After hours he pursued his passion for art and soon his talent was discovered by the abstract artist, Max Ackermann, who recommended he quit his career in

the police force.

Now Philipp is the only living artist whose artwork is displayed in the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket, alongside Stubbs and Herring. His art can be found all over the world and his clients include the late Queen Mother, Sheik Mohammed al Maktoum and many prestigious

Thoroughbred and Warmblood studs.

The 82-year-old artist now lives in Northern Germany with his family.
