Welcome 03

Welcomeby Pamela Maryfield

Staines is special. Yes, it is a splendid and varied, though modestly sized, shopping centre, but it isvery much more. It deserves some time for exploration beyond the shops to appreciate its character.

First, Staines is a Thameside town. The river has given Staines importance and an economic lifeline.Today, it is the setting for leisurely picnics and for enjoying the boating life of skiffs, punts, sleek fibre-glass regatta racers and old fashioned barges. A good place to enjoy this river scene is the MemorialGardens, newly laid out with water features and a sculpture of the town’s symbol, its swans. Theupstream view is framed by the elegant 1832 John Rennie bridge, while that downstream ispunctuated by the spire of St Peter’s church.

For the Romans, the Thames crossing at Staines was an early and strategic point and may even havepre-dated the crossing in London. Why choose this particular point? The reason is geological. Unusually in the lower Thames valley, there is a series of gravel islands oneither side of the river. These provide settlement sites above the flood plain and sound footings northand south for a bridge. If you are observant, you may still distinguish the small rises in the land rightacross the town centre. Excavations in the 1970s ahead of developing the Elmsleigh Centre, revealedvaluable evidence of a Roman settlement and the wet conditions preserved scraps of perishablearticles such as leather sandals and a wooden comb.

Staines has other snatches of waterways which have been incorporated into the most recentdevelopments. North of the pedestrianised High Street - a lively spot on market days - The River Colnflows through the Two Rivers Shopping Centre. Wander west a little into Hale Street and Church Streetto find the River Wraysbury flowing to the Coln before both join the Thames near the Town Pier.

Staines Bridge is essentially the graceful structure opened by William IV in 1832 and designed by JohnRennie. It was the fourth attempt to replace the medieval bridge, itself partially destroyed in the 17thcentury during the civil war, when Staines was, for a time, at the heart of the fighting. It waseventually held by the Parliamentary forces, whose soldiers were billeted on the townsfolk and leftwithout paying their bills!

With its watery surroundings, it is not surprising that Staines has had several mills. The Doomsdaybook stated that Staines had six valued at 64 shillings. Later they provided income for the lord of themanor, the Abbey of Westminster, and they ground the flour for the Abbot’s table. More recently theywere adapted to become breweries, which had a ready and thirsty market in London. A prominentlandmark on Bridge Street is the tower of the former Courage brewery and near the station the OastHouse is now an adult education centre. Also, the inventor of linoleum, the first affordable floorcovering, set up his business on what is now the Two Rivers shopping centre in the 1870s. The factorywas, for many years, the town’s largest employer and was commemorated recently by sculpture on theHigh Street.

In the late 20th century the town struggled to accommodate the traffic which passed through on theA30, the old Great South-West Road. In the 1950s, traffic jammed the bridge and the High Street. There has been relief in several stages, making for years of awkward compromise and the loss of some“heritage” - the oldest buildings and much of the street pattern. But, at last the various schemes havecome together and the losses have provoked a vigorous and watchful civic pride. However, Staines hasalways focused onm its long held ambition, to be a major, vibrant and welcoming town centre.

Pamela Maryfield is the author of “Staines – A History”which is available at Waterstone’s, WHSmiths and Books etc.

Church Street lies at the top end of theHigh Street and is one of Staines’ mostattractive locations. The street basks in anaura of gentle charm and with it’scenturies old surroundings and tangiblelinks with the past, provides a showcasefor all that is good about the town. It is nowonder that television companiesregularly use it for atmospheric locationwork – one such use has been as part ofOxford in the popular Inspector Morseseries.

The Rivers Coln and Wraysbury joinmidway down Church Street, forming atranquil oasis of flowing water and over-hanging trees that almost make you forgetwhere you are. Church Street’s mainattraction however is the plethora ofindependent businesses. No where else in

Staines will you find such a collection ofestablished businesses providing such avast array of services.

With all the big national companies andthe development of Staines, thebusinesses of Church Street havemanaged to retain their own identity andthis is mainly due to the tightly knitcommunity spirit the store owners havewith each other. Wherever you go you aresure to receive a warm and friendlygreeting.

So don’t be too shy to stand and stare atthe fine buildings, some of which dateback 300 years, for the owners are proudof the street and it’s vital role in Staines’town centre
