STAHL 2015
on 12 November at the CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf
Dear Sir or Madam
The Steel Innovation Prize was awarded in Berlin in June and the sec-ond European Steel Technology and Application Days took place in Düsseldorf. These two events impressively demonstrate the importance the steel industry in Germany and Europe attaches to developing produc-tion and product innovations. The companies are intensifying their efforts in order to secure and enhance their competitiveness in an increasingly challenging environment. Changes are being treated as opportunities. But planning and investment security are required in order to further develop and fully exploit the great potentials offered by steel. Thus de-pendability – regarding, for example, politically defined conditions – is a major topic in 2015.
This year’s motto for the event – Setting the course for tomorrow – refers to current decisions and developments affecting steel and the steel in-dustry. The event focuses on trends and prospects. Whereby, among other things, speakers will examine the opportunities and challenges of digita-lisation, as well as requirements resulting from the energy transition – regarding both products and their production. Trade policy challenges in global foreign trade will also be assessed. In the afternoon, the regulations involved in environmental, climatic and resource policies and their impli-cations, as well as the contribution made by steel solutions for modern in-frastructure, will be examined. Developments in energy efficiency during steel production will also be discussed. These and other issues are to be treated during the STAHL 2015 annual meeting.
The event traditionally concludes with the Steel-Get-Together, which starts at 6:00 p.m.
Best wishes,

This year’s event focuses on the future of Europe’s industrial base and important socio-political decisions. In this context, technical innovations, political conditions and the intensification of competition on global markets are of central importance.
Following Mr. Kerkhoff’s keynote speech on the steel industry, Dr. Werner Hoyer, President of the European Investment Bank, will examine the challenges facing Europe. In addition to the investment offensive by the European Commission, he will look into the effects caused by the finance and debt crisis within the European Union.
Prof. Ernst Schmachtenberg, Rector of RWTH Aachen University, will focus on the primary industries’ increasing challenge of recruiting young talent. He will not only assess the current situation, but also offer potential courses of action.

Industry 4.0 has become a synonym of how the Internet of Things and Services fundamentally changes manufacturing processes. Through the internet people are linked with products and products with machines and plants. We are only at the beginning of these dramatic changes, but success will primar-ily depend on the innovation ability of industrial enterprises. Industry 4.0 enables cost, quality, flexibility and time savings over the complete process chain in product manufacturing. These benefits must be identified and then systematically used.
• On the way to Industry 4.0 techniques and technologies need to be developed further or completely new. Therefore, research and development play a major role.
• The mechanical and plant engineering supplies products that must be able increasingly to provide process and product data autonomously and so to comply with the requirements under Industry 4.0.
• Finally, it is reported how companies in the steel industry face up to the challenges of the future. Here are technical and organizational requirements as well as first results in focus of the presentations.

The energy transition has fundamentally restructured the generation of energy. Political decision makers strongly pursue the search for alternative forms of energy. The steel industry faces new challenges due to the innovations in renewable energies. These challenges have to be accepted and necessary technical solutions have to be introduced.
Todays forming technology offers great opportunities to create new products with innovative and efficient production methods. The steel dialogue addresses the challenges for the rolled steel industry. Products for the energy transition will be introduced, to report about investments and developments, necessary to manufacture new materials and products, with a high process liability and small tolerances according to our customers‘ needs.

International trade is changing: protectionist measures tend to increase in times of weaker global growth. Governments use strategic trade policies to try to create advantages for their industry in international competition. At the same time, the removal of non-tariff trade barriers necessitates deeper integration and new forms of international co-operation. This is a particular challenge for the steel industry in Germany: How can open markets – upon which Germany’s steel-based value-creation chains depend – be maintained whilst creating fair competitive conditions? What role can the World Trade Organisation play in this? What strategies are the European Commission, German steel processors and the EU steel industry following? These and other questions will be examined in greater detail in this session.

Direct and smelting reduction processes for the reduction of iron ores are shortening the production chain as they do not need a coke plant like the blast furnace. In Europe these processes – except one plant – are not in application. The question arises which boundary conditions are necessary for the economical application of such plants. The blast furnace process today is operated at the optimum of its raw materi-als and energy efficiency. Are there still existing potentials? Material and energy streams as well as the external energy supply and the coupling energy production are today in the focus, especially regarding the efficiency of the total energy consumption of the integrated route. The efficient use of energy is with respect to the huge economical importance a main part of company strategies.

A modern and efficiently designed infrastructure is essential for the proper functioning of any economy based on division of labour. Transport routes, interlinked by bridging structures, play a major part here. “Talk about steel” will be the forum for discussing ways of meeting present and future challenges in bridge construction. After an outline of the current situation with respect to existing bridges, the presentations will intro-duce steel-based innovations capable of meeting not only the current challenges but future ones as well.
Practical examples show that steel is an optimal base material for realising sustainable constructions. Compared to other construction types, there is a quantitative advantage to be obtained over the lifetime of a bridge structure, particularly in the case of composite steel bridges, thanks to the environmen-tal properties of the material and the limitation of economic losses in the event of traffic restrictions.
Finally, “Talk about steel” addresses the question of traffic infrastructure facilities in urban settings and the emergence of megacities around the world with the challenges they pose for existing transport and traffic concepts in conurbations. In this case, steel again shows itself to be an optimal basis for innovative solutions for tomorrow’s world.

Clear signals regarding global climate protection are expected from the 21st UN Climate Conference in Paris (the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 21st Con-ference of the Parties = COP 21). Discussions on the emission trading scheme after 2020 are reaching a climax. These developments have become one of the biggest challenges for the steel industry.
Nevertheless an overall picture will only become apparent when all the demands are added up. In response to this, the topics of resource efficiency and recycling will also be examined: What will be the effect of the European Commission’s new package of measures, expected in autumn? What consequences will they have in addition to national projects like the Substitute Building Materials Ordinance?
Steel companies have a regional responsibility and must hold its own in global competition at the same time. The demands on this are opposed to the framework provided nationally and by Europe. How can the conflict be solved?
Ultimately, the central question of a concluding round of discussions is: Is Germany and Europe as steel producing region still sustainable?
Future requirements from environ-mental, climate and resource policy

Unser wichtigster Werkstoff: Geschichte, Herstellung, Verwendung
